Hard to call this year. Highland lost a lot from the 17-3 team last year that won league. While they will be tough again, I would be very surprised if they repeated.
1. Copley
2. Revere
3. Wadsworth
4. Highland
5. Cloverleaf
6. Green
7. Tallmadge
8. Barberton
Thoughts?

Probably a pretty good guess. Maybe switch High and Wads, and Green and Clov. Rev and Cop should be a toss-up. Tall and Barb get a little better every year, so you'll have to show up and play against them. Just hope everyone stays healthy for all the teams.

I'm gonna go with...
1.)Copley
2.)Wadsworth
3.)Highland
4.)Cloverleaf
5.)Revere
6.)Tallmadge
7.)Green
8.)Barberton

Any teams scrimmage yet?
Tallmadge lost to their Alumni team 3-0
1.) Highland
2.)Revere
3.)Copley
4.)Cloverleaf
5.)Wadsworth
6.)Green
7.)Tallmadge
8.)Barberton
Highland will repeat, but they will have a tough fight with Revere and Copley. Cloverleaf should surprise some people. Wadsworth and Green are weak tactically. They have very little imagination with there attack. Besides Green runs the worst defense in the league if you don't count Barberton and Tallmadge.

Highland beat Medina 2-1 in a scrimmage. Lot of injuries and other players out right now, should have most back for league play... Hornets have however lost their best player in Bender to a broken leg he got playing Medina, out for the season. They still may be able to score somewhat, but defensively this is not the same team it was a year ago. I don't see them repeating. Should impove exponetially as the year goes on, so if they can get it done early on, then things could be different from how I see it.

and the rest just suck. quote from my friend not me

Wadsworth tied revere tonight 0-0...revere had many more opportunities, but couldn't convert. In the second half the game was more even, and it was somewhat back and forth. Looks like the top four are spot on with wadsworth, revere, copley, and highland...with highland possibly rounding out the fourth spot. I also heard that green beat cloverleaf 3-0. This was unbelievable to me...is it true?

No offense because i don't know much about revere, but who do they have? I mean it seemed to me like they lost all of there dangerous players to graduation, and bender is out for the year now i think? I know they beat medina 2-1, but this is medina's worst team in years. why is highland so good?

What is the word on Copley Soccer? Is their new coach going to bring them some wins/titles??
FootsWalker

The team has responded very well to the new coach. Unfortunately, Copley, much like Highland(maybe even worse) have already suffered some major injuries that could affect their W/L record moving forward.

As one could tell from the standings...Highland, Wadsworth, and Revere all in contention for the SLT but Highland is going to pull this one out. They are currently ranked 10th in the state, and I don't want to get ahead of myself, but The only thing slowing them down will be Walsh and CVCA in Districts....I think there matchups with Lake on Saturday and Brunswick later in the year are games to keep your eye on to see if they really have what it takes.

ok first holy crap that team must blow.....and how can you not say highland repeats...honestly they are the deepest by far and even with all there key players either out or banged up they get it done on the worst field in surburban.... beat revere 2-0 and dominated the game.....only loss so far was a scrimmage to cvca without starting keeper leading scorer and key midfielder...plus who else in surburban is ranked???

I don't know...i'm sure highland is good, but that's what everyone said last year when wadsworth dominated them 2-0. Now i'm not trying to be negative because i honestly haven't seen highland play yet this year and they're probably very talented, but they haven't played any competition at all yet...let's wait and see how they do against real teams before we jump to conclusions

Wadsworth dominated last year?!?!?! That game was much closer than the score, but Wadsworth was the better team that night. That was the SL opener for Highland and I believe if they played Wadsworth near the end of the season, it would have been a different story. Wadsworth lost to Copley and tied Cloverleaf, both teams defeated by Highland and the Cloverleaf game wasn't even close. AND I DO BELIEVE HIGHLAND WAS SUBURBAN LEAGUE CHAMPS!! You're right, everyone said Highland was good last year and they were AND they say they are good this year AND they are! Right now they are 9 and 0 and are ranked 9th in the state. Is Wadsworth ranked?

I think it is a pretty general agreement around the league that Highland played it's worst game of the season that night.
They have beaten Revere and Green, two teams that are pretty good. They also took down a Medina squad in preseason play that is always good. The Highland/Wadsworth game this year is the big one from the looks of it, along with Copley's games versus those two teams.
wadsgriz1212
09-20-08, 11:26 AM
ok...i said i wasn't trying to be negative towards highland, and i'm not saying wadsworth is better than they are this year. I'm just saying i think highland is getting too much credit for who they've played. If they beat quality teams then you can talk about playoff runs and suburban league champs. And for the record Wadsworth beat Medina when they were the number 2 team in the state and undefeated in the last game of the regular season last year, so i doubt highland would have wanted to play wadsworth at the end of the year last year.
seahawks4life
09-20-08, 03:57 PM
wadsgirl your obviously a lil biased... highland is better than wadsworth.... wadsworth is bigger but less skilled and not as quick.... and wadsworth didnt dominate last years game they had 3 shots and two hpeened to go in... highland had the ball on wadswaorth half the whole second half of the game....highland will repeat...

Number 1: You are a little inaccurate. Medina was never #2 in the state last year. The Gazette mis-quoted their ranking. They were actually 8th or 9th. What did Wadsworth do with Medina in the play-offs?!?! You failed to mention in your thread that, when it counted, Wadsworth was beaten by Medina pretty soundly!!
It may be hard to admit, but Highland improved greatly as the season went on and many soccer experts felt a rematch with Wadsworth would have been much different than that first SL game of the year. "Me thinks" Wadsworth wouldn't have wanted anything to do with Highland in late October. Wooster tied either Wadsworth or Medina last year and Highland beat them 4 to 0 in Wooster in mid October.
Wadsworth will for sure win the league this year. Despite the loss of Joel Hlavaty who had all-state potential. They've gotten strong play from a few players like Jake Sussman and Brent Merrick. If Jake Hiltner steps up his game and stops playing like a girl then Wadsworth will run away with the league!!!!!

sussman and merrick are both completely overrated... plus highland lost there best player in the preseason in bender... plus leading scorer , nesic , is playing on a sprained ankle.... the only adavantage wadsworth has is home field as history... but highland has been proving its own history wrong lately
I'm actually surprised you could say that sussman and merrick are overrated. Merrick is technically sound and Sussman flies around like a bird, they should call him birdman or something. Yes, the loss of Joel Hlavety was HUGE, wadsworth with still win the league with the leadership of Curtis Taylor and Cameron Meribedini.

Well now, do you want to rethink that prediction?? All Highland has to do is beat Copley or win one of the two SL games left (if Copley loses to someone else) and the worst they can do is tie for the title. Wadsworth is done now with a loss and a tie and has no chance for the SL title. So much for the above boasting!!!!!!!

ha yes i have played in highland...won 2-0 last year. And i talked to one of my friends from the team and he said that one of your players said throughout the play of the game that "it was back and forth...one team's chance after another". So i'm giving highland the respect of beating a quality team. How about you give wadsworth the respect of being a quality team and learn how to be a team with newfound success (aka not trash established progams)

Too bad its Highland's turn to host this year. Would've made for a much more enjoyable game to watch on Copley's turf field. Highland's field is in much worse shape than usual for this time of year. Not sure a bad field really favors either team, but it certainly makes it tough for either team to truly show their skill. Should be interesting though, and by the way, Copley still has Wadsworth to play.

By far the dirtiest team I've seen this year. And if half I read about the Hoban Elyria Catholic game is true, then they've gotten worse. Good luck tomorrow. Hoping to see an epic rematch on Saturday

yeah some of the highland players went to the hoban elyria catholic game and the only shot they have of beating us is dirty play

Wierd game. Copley dominated the ball, outshot StV probably 13-4, but lose the game 3-1. St V made a PK, Copley missed a PK. St V seemed to spend a little too much time hacking, but they did finish the few chances they had, and Copley did not. You always hope that you have "this" kind of game during the regular season, and not in the tourney, because outplaying the other team doesn't mean anything there, only the scoreboard matters and you just get to go home. Good luck to St V in the next round.

Well said Foots. That is one of the unique qualities of soccer. The better team does not always win. So that leads to the philosphical argument of defining the "better team". Copley played better soccer...had more opportunities...but couldn't finish when it counted. St V did. So, I have to conclude that St V was the better team tonight when it really counted. The final outcome is that St V moves on.

This is huge for Highland. Copley is better then SVSM... Highland now looks destined to repeat as district champs as long as they focus on the task at hand.

dont be so quick... svsm is in perfect position after having a promising tourney in illinois... but i think highland should pull through as well

3-2 Highland "upsets" St.V's...The soccer tourney in Illinois that SVSM attended seems to be giving them quite a bit of momentum thats carrying over into these playoff games...only concern ;)

interesting thaat even tho copley won SLT highland made it further in the playoffs and prolly woulda beat the team copley lost to 3-1 if not for a silly mistake in the box
(keep in mind highland then would've played bay, the team they lost to in pks last year)

First official mention that Highland coach Bill Zufall has resigned was in today's Medina Gazette...
Really too bad... He took the Highland program to the next level. He will stay with the program as an associate head coach helping the program continue to grow. My hope for head coach is Bobby Harmon, Highland's current assistant coach.

as a player it has already been anounced that harmon will stepping up as head coach.... zufall has resigned for personal reasons that he only briefly mentioned to even his players.... guess he was gonna resign last year as well but decided to get another great season in
also worthy of taking note is coach zufalll said that he and bobby harmon " might be switching roles" in whihc case he would not be seen very much
but either way they have coached together for close to 15 years..harmon has head coach experience....basically highland will not be as good as they were last year, next year, with that said i still dont belive the strategy will change

Highland returns plenty of talent again for next year... I think they may be in for a better year than this year actually, pending goalie problems. I don't think we will see a team like 2007 however for a few years... No doubt in my mind that if Harmon takes over this program will continue to flourish...

abbregg says he is coming back to highland  goalie problems still?
and i dont agree... they will be much slower and only have nesic scoring with nauman coming up from mid a lot to help out
defense will prolly be better than last year actually
but the mid will be very talented and be able to makle plays, but will be as slow as ever and always chasing

Here are the all league selections...
What are your comments? Any surprises? Anyone looked over? Anyone higher up than they should be?
Suburban League
Boys soccer
First Team — Copley: Mitchell Ivasku,Sam Galloway, Kevin Ivasku, Kevin Dressler. Revere: Tim Wang, Tanner Krauth. Wadsworth: Brandon House, Jake Hiltner. Highland: Justin Nolan, Tony Stercula, Austin Zickler. Green: Chris Matejka, Jesse Cavalier. Barberton: Nick Gore. Tallmadge: Taylor Smoot.
Second Team — Copley: Brian Ruhaak.Revere: Andy Harding, Andy Lamb. Wadsworth: Robby Kaminski, Logan Kilbride. Highland: Kevin Filip,Jacob Naumann. Green: Ryan Wilson, Nick Nussen. Cloverleaf: Josh Mewhinney, Tyler Daniels. Barberton: Kevin Brummond, Todd Sabol. Tallmadge: James Plunket.
Honorable Mention — Copley: Max Fisher, Tanner Manfull. Revere: Pat Szeles, Ryan Hoffner. Wadsworth: Josh Green, Ian Johnson. Highland: Martin Nesic, Steven Tien. Green: Mike Hardman, Tyler Miller. Cloverleaf: Grant Brodnik, Logan Zuk. Barberton: Milos Dragic, John-Mark Ziegler. Tallmadge: Alex Licitri, Jamie Wade.
I'd say that I'm a little surprised with no one from Cloverleaf being represented on 1st team, with them finishing above Tallmadge and Barberton and 1 point behind Green

sf- I think that was a typo. The Green players listed are actually from Cloverleaf. Green's players were accidently omitted. Should have been Juan(can't remember last name), and J Sprandel I think.

Well if Abbregg comes back they are set...
Returning the leading scorer in Nesic is a lot of goals alone... The passing on Tien and Naumann at Center Mid will set up whoever the other forward is, possibly Cronister assuming they will be looking for speed, even if the footskills aren't quite there.....
In the Midfield they will be slow, but they are skilled... The key will be maintaining posession of the ball, which with the skills and coaching of this team they should be able to do... Good coaching teaches you not to chase...
The defense won't be better than the 07 team... Prebis is the best sweeper this school will see in a very long time, and Bock at stopper likewise... Zickler and Fredrick on the outsides was simply amazing with those other two......
Next years defense will be good... I'm assuming Mancini at Sweep, Jameyson at Stop, and that freshman on the outside, with maybe Cronister if he isn't up top, otherwise not sure? Again very good, probably better than this years, but no way better than last years...

tien will most likely play a center defensive mid, mancini sweping, snyder and prolly bp playing defense with chronister, nauman in the middle but pushing up real far, guzik and tinyo outside, nesic up top of course
sefcek and fredrick coming in at outside mids most likely
dont really know what to expect other than the obvious right now...lol

At first he was going to become the head of soccer operations or something for Highland, maybe still is? But he is definitely head coach for the boys as of now.

odd/bad situation IMO to say he is stepping down and letting harmon take over and now according to you is coming back
but there was a soccer meeting last week, that may have been what it was all about:shrug:

Odd is right...
Honestly though, I'm not completely shocked he is back. Zufall loves soccer, he also loves the team. The health issues cited in him stepping down were stress related which probably had a good deal to do with the season and winning and such. With the young family, I couldn't blame him for making the choice he did. That said, he loves coaching... Staying away would be rough for him. I was curious as to what exactly his role would be in that head of soccer role discussed... Very curious how hands on or off that would be with regards to coaching. Obviously we won't know now as he will be the head coach still and as involved as ever I'm assuming...
Hopefully he can deal with the health issues so he doesn't have to worry about him or his family. Happy we kept him though! Great coach, who knows what he is doing, and really loves it too.

That wasn't really unexpected... With the graduation that Highland had, repeating would've only further been a testament to Zufall as well as an omen to just how good Highland has gotten in soccer all of a sudden. It was especially unexpected for a repeat considering Highland lost the league's best player in Bender to injury before the season started.
I had called for Highland 4th before the year started, that with Bender. I didn't put enough faith into what Zufall can do though, nor the talent Highland is cranking out yearly. Zufall coming back is definitely not good for the rest of the league. Even had he left, Highland is well on it's way to becoming a state power (let alone a league power). With the talent in the pipelines, that won't change anytime soon. Luckily, we still have a great coach to hold and grow that talent.
Highland will again contend for a league title next year. They may not win it, but they can't be counted out. Same can be said for the next half a decade at the least...
