This is a question that I have been wondering about for some time, and I'm looking for some other people's insite. Before I begin, I will say that I only know for sure that it's like this in the Falls, but I believe it's this way most places.

Why do girls that are between the ages of 6 and 12 have to "try-out" for cheerleading, but boys between those same ages do not have to "try-out" for football?

This always seemed like a double standard to me. Not only do the boys not have to try-out, the coach has to make sure that every boy plays a certain number of plays. Don't get me wrong, I think every boy should get to play, but I also think that every girl that wants to cheer at these ages should get to cheer! No one in their right mind would ever look at an eight year old boy and tell him that he's not good enough to play on the football team, so why can anybody look at an eight year old girl and tell her she's not good enough to be on the cheer squad?

I've heard the argument that you just can't have 20 cheerleaders on the sidelines at one time. These same people have never tried to coach a football team with 26-30 boys and make sure they all get their plays.

Like I said, I don't know if the girls in Springfield have to try-out or not. I posted this question in this forum because I am a Springfield guy and I know a lot of Springfield people. If I'm missing the point and there is a good reason to break a little girl's heart that really wants to cheer but isn't that good, please let me know.

It depends who makes the rules. In Varsity football the rules are changed whenever needed. I dont see why it cant be done for the cheer squad.

Each organization has their own rules for cheering. It is not governed by the league. And the varsity rules change only when the board decides , and it isn't "whenever " needed.

I typically do not get involved with Cheerleading myself, but this much I do know. For the 2008 Season, there will not be try-outs for the Flag through A teams. All girls will make the Squad. I believe JV and Varsity will still conduct Try-outs but are looking at options to allow all to participate.

That makes way more sense than what they do in the falls.

In Green everyone makes the cheerleading squads. We do have tryouts for A, JV, and Varsity the top scores go on the competition team but all make the team for games.
