02-12-08, 01:44 PM
For any kids between the ages 10 and 15, I will be putting on a Speed and Agility Camp beginning April 20. The Camp will be 6 Sessions, lasting one hour each Session, taking place every other Sunday beginning at 7:00 PM. Cost will be free and is open to any child falling between this age catagory.

Depending on weather conditions, each Session will be held at Akron Indoor Soccer facility, just off Wilbeth Road near the Firestone Stadium. Weather permitting, we may conduct classes at an outdoor location to be named later.
T-shirts will be distributed to the children at the end of the Camp.

Focus will be on improving the childs footwork, quickness and over all speed. Various different Cone Drills and other Training exercises will be performed by the child and monitored by an Adult. Hand Held timing will be logged each week on individual performances and evaluated at the end of the Camp.

Sign ups begin immediately. Any interested individuals please contact Joe Moran via sending a PM on this website or email at micki.moran@yahoo.com.

Great, I like to see more involvment in our community. Cant this take place in our comunity though? I`m sure Mr. Stauffer would work with you.

Its difficult to run these type of Clinics on a Gym floor, because of the traction factor. An indoor facility with Artificial Turf, makes for better reaction times.

Using school Fields for something like this, is an option, and I will look into this. Thank you for the suggestion.

Along with these exercises there will be Football related drills incorporated into the mix, such as Blocking Techniques, Receiver Pass Routes and simple QB training drills.

Check with your high school coach to see if this violates or counts against the High School or Jr. High football instruction days.

Also, you might want to check with whatever youth league you will be involved with to make sure that this doesn't count against you.

This is a personal individualy run Camp, not associated with any organization, and is open to any child, within the age limits, from any district.

I'm pretty sure it does not affect any Youth or High School organization.

I'm not busting your chops. I would check with the high school coach to make sure this doesn't count against your Jr High or High School. The speed and agility thing is fine but once you start incorporating football techiques and drills, it's a very touchy area.

Understood, I didn't mean to sound harsh, just got in a hurry typing.

I will definately look into this, because thats the last thing I would want to do, is interfere with their programs. :)

This sounds like a great idea. I don't see how this could count towards anything unless you are going to be a highschool or middle school coach this year. I mean, if we all took our kids to say a quarterback camp, or a kicking camp they get plenty of football technique, but it wouldn't count as any school practice. I think you're fine with this, and I'd like to bring my boys to it. They definately need help with there footwork!

That's individually, you pay and it's not run by community "volunteers". I'm not talking about the 10 - 13 year olds either. I'm more concerned about the 14 and 15 year olds. Just make sure, I'm sure you'll be OK, I would just double check. Believe me, that's the last thing you want.

Here is the rule that I think you guys are talking about:

10-3-5 After a student becomes a member of an interscholastic football squad, the student may not participate in non-interscholastic football, including contests, tryouts and any type of training or practices, during the school year. From June 1 through July 31, members of an interscholastic
football squad may participate in non-contact football contests, tryouts or any type of training and practices and attend non-contact team football camps or instructional
programs.

The bylaws can be read here with Acrobat Reader:
http://www.ohsaa.org/general/about/Bylaws.pdf

From the way that I read this, anyone that participated in a school organized football program (not sure about 7th and 8th grade) is not eligible to participate except during the months of June and July if any football drills are being taught. If it was simply a speed camp, I believe that it would be OK for everyone to openly participate at any time.

Irish87
02-14-08, 09:17 AM
So, it looks like, if this Camp is held before June, what I have proposed would be ok? If not, I could just omit any of the "football skill" exercises.

By the way, I have sent an e-mail to the AD, asking his advice on the proposal. Hopefully he can shed some light on this, to make sure we are all legit.

Yeah,

I think as long as the football stuff is taken out you'll be just fine.

Doesn't anybody else find this kinda bull? States down South basically play football all year long, but us here in the North have restrictions on when we can play football. No wonder States like Texas, Florida and many of the SEC Team states are catching up, or have already caught up to our Football in Ohio.

Just imagine how much better, NE Ohio Football teams would be, if we could play all year long as other states do.

GRPride86

Schools down south actually have "Spring Training" just like the colleges do.

I agree with you 100%! It's like that in Ohio in most all high school sports. I don't see the problem with kids working on their favorite sport all year long if they choose. I believe in wrestling the kids are limited to a set number of matches that they can wrestle during the off season also. Why in Ohio are the kids that have the desire to work hard and try to be the best in their sport limited? Is exercise not good for kids? Just my opinion.

02-14-08, 07:48 PM
Let me play Devil's Advocate, because for the record, I don't necessarily agree with it myself. Is it so kids become more well rounded, and not limited? They become exposed to more things if playtime in other areas are limited.

Wow, it's starting to sound as though they are trying to mandate playtime through the state.......wow, I need to quit spending so much time on the political forums.

Can a girl or boy say that is 14 15 that plays for the syf be involved if they know the right people?

Take It 2 Tha Bank
02-15-08, 08:59 AM
WHile Tha Bank thinks this camp might violate OHSAA rules with the football skills involved, Tha Bank believes it is a great thing. While abiding by the rules of the OHSAA, Tha Bank believes i is crazy that they limit what football players can do between specific dates, yet, they allow basketball to have open gyms thrughout the year basically. Yeah, right, Tha Bank knows that there is no coaching or evaluating going on by the coaches, SURE THERE ISN'T!!!!!! Additionally, they let basketbll have summer leagues to play against other high schools as teams! Why no regualtions on hoop, yet they cram limitations on football so harshly??!!

Spring practice in the South has been going on for years, and this is why some of these schools' teams are so good and well-prepared each year. They get to evaluate and condition and play in the Sring, so they hit the field running come August. But Tha Bank would still put StX and Mooney (with McCarthy) of the past few years up against those South teams proudly any day of the week!!!

Good Luck with this process nd hope to see it get off the ground within the rules of the OHSAA.-Bank

Information regarding the Camp has been modified to omit any football related excercises and will concentrate on improving the childs speed and quickness.
This was done, just to be sure there were no questions or accusations done and/or interference with OHSAA.

Hey, count us in. I'm not sure how much BD can do, they did cut his cast down today so he is definitely on the mend. Do you think he would be able to participate? Not using his better judgement he has been playing back-yard football so it has surely not kept him down to much.

I've received a few questions, about people asking if their child can participate, even though he doesn't go to Springfield. Absolutely! This Clinic is for any child from any city. They do not have to be from Springfield. It is open to any child within the age requirements. Hope this helps.

Thanx Polster. I thought the kids really pushed themselves and took in everything we were preaching. I saw a lot of smiles on their faces as well, which tells me they had fun also.
I hope everyone continues to come back for the next 5 Sessions. I've got many other exercises for them to perform, which will help with their footwork.
Thank you to all the people who helped run the first Session and the Parents for bringing their children.

I think it was a huge success and the kids got a lot out of it. Results showed, there was a temendous amount of improvement from the kids. I'd like to also thank everyone who helped out and made this possible.
Look for more of these in the near future.

Irish,

the camp was a big success with children from all over summit county showing up.. i think this showed a lot of the kids in our township the dedication needed to excel in life and sports... great job and you showed a lot of the parents in this township what you are all about. without over using this saying you are truly here to help the kids and i applaud you for running a first class camp..:)
