I'd say Dublin Jerome or Dublin Coffman will come out of the top half of the Columbus district bracket. I presume Cincinnati Moeller will come out of the bottom half.

http://www.ohsaa.org/sports/ih/boys/results/2008/ColumbusBrkt08.pdf

I haven't been paying a lot of attention, but I'm guessing University School is the team to beat in the Kent district. Hopefully, the Columbus district winner will put up a good fight in the state semis like Upper Arlington did last year.

The other Cleveland area district has Seeds #1 St. Ignatius, #2 Padua and #3 St. Edward. It will be interesting as Padua beat St. Ignatius 5-2 last Saturday in the Baron Cup semi-final and St. Eds beat Padua 6-0 in the final (St. Eds also beat U.S. 3-0 in the other semi-final).

As is often the case, it looks like the Brooklyn District will be the most competitive. I just hope St. Edward can survive and have something left in the tank for the Frozen Four.

I agree EF, assuming we move to the districts we should play Padua in the semi's we are 2-2 against them (L 4-2, W 8-1, L 2-1, W 6-0) if we get by Padua then we would probably see Ignatius in the finals and we are 0-2 against them this year (L 3-2 in OT, L 3-0). As we know Ignatius lost to Padua last week 5-2 in the Baron Cup semi-final and we beat Padua the next day 6-0. This makes for an interesting district.

Lose to Benedictine 3-2, what a joke. Last year they beat St. Edward and this year lose to Bene. Thats gotta suck, but worse makes it easier for Padua. They'll be fresher for the Eagles now.

Hockey is just not a sport for a one and done type tourney. Benny has very little offense but a solid goal so they can upset a good team or two along the way in the tourney, remember they beat BG at the begining of the season while be out shot by some ridiculous amount. Padua will probably out shoot the Bengals by 30 or so but if the goalie Marshall stays hot you never know.

Benny isn't a bad team, they just underachieved a lot this year. I was frustrated with the way this team played all season, but I'm proud of the way they've turned it on down the stretch. They've already pulled one upset and it would be great to see them get another big one. Either way, don't expect them to roll over for Padua.

St. Edward will play St. Ignatius (barring a North Omsted miracle tonight) for the title Saturday at 6PM.

St. Edward in 18-6 over the last 8 years vs. the Frozen Tornado, however Ignatius has won 3-2 and 3-0 this season.

Predictions:

I think St. X's dream season continues with another emotional win. St.X does the unthinkable and crashes the party as the first ever Cincinnati representative in the State finals.

X - 4
GA - 2

Unfortunately, there's not enough left in the tank to skate with the horses of St.Eds and Francis, or match their experience and discipline.

That said,

St. Ed - 5
Frannies - 3

And in the end St. Ed gets back to the promised land...

St. Ed - 6
St. X - 2

However, this sport freely associates with one of the greatest upsets in history. A St. X miracle on ice would be a heck of a story, and without a doubt one of the greatest upsets/cinderella stories in all ohio high school sports.

Auggie, Gilmour has 7 out of state players on its 25 man Varsity A roster (the team playing in Columbus today).

I agree entirely about the restructuring of the divisions in Cleveland hockey. I think the top 12-15 teams should be put together and split in to two or three divisions. Also, I think the league should look in to some of the creative scheduling techniques that other leagues in the state use to get the kids some more games.

Even though he runs laps around the junior Whidden in terms of coaching experience, and even though he has sprinkled his roster with out of state players who came to the school for the main purpose of playing hockey, I still like the Eagles by 3-4 goals. St. Xavier loses in state semifinals
BY TIM WARSINSKEY | ENQUIRER CONTRIBUTOR

COLUMBUS - St. Xavier's first trip to the state hockey semifinals was a long weekend, but not long enough for the Bombers.

They'll head home today after losing to Gilmour Academy, 4-2, Sunday night in Nationwide Arena.

St. Xavier (16-13-5) endured Saturday's blizzard and a long wait Sunday.

The semifinal did not start until 9 p.m., after the Columbus Blue Jackets' game against Tampa Bay and after Lakewood St. Edward's 4-2 victory over Toledo St. Francis in the first semifinal.

The semifinals originally were scheduled for Saturday, but were postponed by the snow storm.

Gilmour (23-17-1), also making its first state semifinal appearance, will play 10-time state champion Lakewood St. Edward (28-11-3) today at 5 p.m.

St. Edward will be missing two starters, who were ejected in a last-minute brawl.

St. Xavier fell behind early and dug a deeper hole in the third period when the Bombers faced two 5-on-3 Gilmour power plays.

The first resulted in a Gilmour goal by Roc Gossett and a 3-0 lead.

St. Xavier broke the shutout on senior Jordan Kamp's goal with assists from Josh Miller and Stephen Louie with 4:46 remaining.

St. Xavier killed the second 5-on-3, during which St. Xavier goalie Joe Gieringer stopped seven shots in a 45-second span.

Gilmour did score an even-strength goal by Gossett with assists from Davis and Noah Hershamn with 1:54 to play.

St. Xavier clearly was worn out, though it was not done scoring. Louie scored on a power play with 41 seconds remaining.

Gieringer finished with 33 saves, and Gilmour sophomore Austin Severson stopped 21 shots.

Sophomore Billy Davis and Gossett each scored two goals for Gilmour.

They play on Gilmour's second line with junior Andrew Phillips, who had three assists.

Gossett and Davis each had an assist.

Gilmour took a 2-0 lead on goals Davis in the first and second periods.

In the night's first semifinal, Alex Novack, Vinny Buttitta and Ross Kivett each had a goal and an assist and Robbie Ginsberg stopped 29 shots to lead Lakewood St. Edward past Toledo St. Francis. Brett Carter also scored for the Eagles (28-11-3). Kivett's was an empty-net goal.

You guys aren't really trying to defend this are you? Sportsmanship isn't just about being a good guy and doing the right thing. The foundation of sportsmanship is also that men, if provoked, can act like animals. So you don't provoke your opponent (especially when they are down and out), you behave like a sportsman.

Once your kid (and at least one other that I saw) started taunting their student section, all bets were off and I'm sure that's how the refs viewed it too.

It continues to amaze me how high school hockey cannot police itself. (for Genco).

Stop the presses... a HS kid acted like a jerk. Problem is, the penalty for acting like a jerk is 2 minutes, the penalty for fighting is 5 minutes and a game. Which one should he receive?

When an athlete behaves that way, he has opened Pandora's Box and exposes himself to whatever happens next. And that goes for whatever school a kid plays for.

At this point, it's petty to pick at the ref's handling of it. The kid provoked a brawl. It was his fault. Period. He has to deal with the consequences.

My feelings are that I would personally sit the kid for the first period of the State finals game. I don't think it's up to the officials to make up rules.

Regarding "provoking a brawl"... What constitutes provoking a brawl? Did he taunt the bench or take a run at the goalie? That's like saying if you bump into someone at a bar you deserve to be put in the hospital b/c you "opened pandora's box". I've seen 1,000 celebrations or similar antics in HS athletics and I can't say I remember a reaction like SFS had.

If a player points at the opponents student section after draining a tough 3pt shot, is that Brawl worthy? What if a player hangs on the rim and styles a little bit? Is that fighting time?

Lastly... what is the penalty here for SFS?

I actually don't care much that Kivett is suspended, b/c this might be what he needs to grow up a little. I think the penalty is a little harsh.... But I'm more interested in this from a rules perspective. Did the refs get it right? Is taunting the same as fighting if it leads to getting hit? What discretion do the refs have or are supposed to have? etc.

Empty netter, skater momemntum rolls him by huge SF student section near SF bench and he stops and starts pounding on the glass at SF fans (saw from behind but pretty obvious he wasn't waving to his mother!) Couple teammates join him in celebrating but he doesn't turn around to join them...then SF skater and goalie and others all start punching and pushing...it was a horrible way to end a well played game by both teams and IMO tainted Ed's victory and SF's great season...was there for the next game, obviously; but I left with a poor opinion of both schools and doubt that's what the coaching staff and school administration would want others to think about their teams and school.

Who had a right to be on the ice at that moment? Who did not?

Momentum carried the kid to that particular spot on the ice. No matter how what you think of SEHS athletes they are not going to jeopardize a state championship by brawling.

So, did Kivett throw a punch, or was his only infraction the taunting? I think that makes a difference ar far as what the ruling should have been...
However, I would support some sort of punishment from the school.

I have my own video and when the first SF skater comes into the group, it appears he and RK are fighting, ref skates up between them quickly and tries to break up and then more skaters from both teams start throwing punches. You do see RK then skate out away from the boards and back towards his bench but he does skate back to a pile and throw a weak punch before stepping out and cheering his team's fighters on. Then you see players on the bench pulling he and #24 further away from the fight.

wow, this is quite ironic...on march 3rd the Toledo Blade issued an article about how St. Francis displayed amazing sportsmanship, and how St. John's displays quite the opposite.

This makes not only SFS but all of nw ohio look pretty bad in the world of hockey now.

Congrats to the Eagles on their 11th State Hockey title, and coach Rob Whidden on his first of many. The Eagles are now 2 for 2 this winter, and Basketball will try to make it 3 for 3 this weekend.

Congratulations to the Eagles and Coach Rob!

37 OHSAA team titles places them 3rd all time behind Upper Arlington (40) and St. Xavier (39).

Yowsers, you guys got the triple a few years back, didn't you? What year was that? Was it 1999 or 2000 maybe?

Anyways, congratulations to St. Edward on another hockey title. I'd like to see you bring the basketball title back to Cleveland, too!

'98 was Baseball, Wrestling, Baseball. No one has ever done the winter sweep. I think Benedictine is the only other school to win 3 in one year.

Several schools have won 3 in one school year. Upper Arlington won 4 in 1986-1987, though that included one girls title.

Schools to win 3 Boys' titles in one school year:
St. Edward 1997-1998
Upper Arlington 1986-1987
Walsh Jesuit 1990-1991
Benedictine 1996-1997
St. Ignatius 2001-2002
Archbishop Alter 1998-1999

FYI, paid attendance was 684.

Yes, less than 700 people attended this game. While there were some serious circumstances that led to this, they really need to move this game back to BG or Brooklyn, not that it'll happen.

Congrats to the St. Edward hockey team.

I admit that I was mildly fascinated by the girls bowling. It reminded me of the last winter Olympics when I repeatedly found myself glued to Curling.

The mistake the OHSAA made (aside from having Hockey in Columbus to begin with) was moving the semi-finals and finals back a day when all the teams were there in town already. That ensured that practically no one would be able to see any of the 3 games. And if the Bluejackets can't give the OHSAA
Sunday afternoon, then another venue should be found. There's no way to make a weekend of it when the Sunday game isn't until 6:30.

Ha! That's funny you say that, I was glued to Curling as well - and it had nothing to do with the sisters from Bemidji, MN. It was all about the sport!!!!

first of all, curling is awesome :)

as for hockey, I think of the semi finals could have been in the morning, the finals could have then been that same evening. Boys Volleyball is not OHSAA sanctioned, but they have a pretty good system. Four State Quarter Final games on Friday, Two state semi-final games Saturday morning, one State Final Saturday evening.

For Hockey, You might not need to more the quarter finals to the same location, but having the semi finals and finals on the same day could be significantly easier (and cheaper) for people traveling to the events, not to mention cheaper for the ohsaa with only one day of venue rental.

As for this year, I dont know if a new venue would have been able to be set up on such short notice. Obviously Value City Arena was in use. I think St. John's arena was also unavailable. What other major venue's in columbus could house the hockey tournament?

I know that in some tourneys hockey teams play twice in the same day, but I don't want to see that at the Frozen Four.

Agreed. This is a physical contact sport. Playing back to back days is already less than ideal.

mannhoodd: When I mentioned finding a different venue, I didn't mean at the last minute. What I meant is that if the Blue Jackets want the Championship game, they need to make their arena available at decent times. If they cannot commit to that, then it should be held someplace else. This year they had a 3pm Bluejackets game, with the finals scheduled for 6:30 on Sunday (they are usually at Noon or 1pm Sunday). What are all the parents and fans who came down Saturday supposed to do until 6:30 on Sunday? If you got a hotel you need to be checked out by 11am... maybe 2pm at the latest.... then you get home late on Sunday. At Brooklyn or BG, the game is not going to get rescheduled or moved around.

Fantastic new venue, but hardly reasonable seeing as how a southern team makes the final four once a blue moon. Too much travel for what will most likely be 3 or more teams from the northern half of the state in the final four.

Has anyone ever played at that Wooster rink?

Top-notch facility, privately-funded by the Rubbermaid fortune guys for the community and I believe they were adding the second rink.

Yeah, lodging may be a consideration. Maybe an Amish bed-n-breakfast?

I would like to witness the meeting of the hockey people with the Amish.

Disagreed, Southern Ohio has been on the rise. Sure they don't do so well against a St. Ed's or St. Francis (actually Moeller tied St. Francis 3-3 at the St. John's Invitational) but the SWOHSHL south teams have been building up there programs and can do quite well against some the the Northern teams. Plus Miami has a state of the art facility and a great campus surrounding it.
