I am under the impression that ALL HS kick-offs that cross the plane of the goal are dead balls and cannot be returned. Ball automatic on the 20.
But, someone told me that Tex allows HS to return the ball from 9 yds deep if they want to. Whats the truth? Thanks
Yep. Texas plays by NCAA w/only a few differences.

I believe more than anything the Texas rules helps Texas kids get scholarships out of state - especially lineman. The blocking rules are different. It is not uncommon for a Texas team playing out of state to get a number of calls for illegal blocks. Conversely, it is not uncommon to see a coach from an out of state team coming to Texas for the first time going crazy that the officials are not calling illegal blocks.
I really do not understand why the NFHS does not allow the return of kicks in the end zone, but allow them from the 1 yard line. If it was a safety issue just restart the game on the 25 or 30 yard line.
Plaindriver if you remember watching Texas High at the Herbie, one of the positives about Findlay was their kicker. He constanty put it in the endzone and the Texas High returners tried to run it out.
