Who is going to win? I just swam against St. Charles at the Northeast Classic and they looked pretty solid at finals. St. Xavier does not look as good as they did last year with Mosko and company. Who's going to win it? St. Xavier for the nth year in a row or a new champion in St. Charles?

Someone I work with has a brother that swims for the Cincinnati Marlins with the St. X kids, he told me that the St. X kids don't plan on winning state this year.

Why wouldn't they plan on winning state? They have said that it will be tougher than in years past, but in no way are they not planning on winning.

I'm just saying what I was told... From what his brother told him, St. Charles is heads and shoulders above St. X, and you don't just say that about St. X swimming. The only reason I can think of that they would think that way is so they can walk in and have nothing to lose, put the pressure on St. Charles to live up to the hype, know what I'm saying?

Seriously though I would never expect St. X to go down without a fight in any sport... I hope they win state again this year.

I heard from someone in high standing in the swimming program that St. Charles is indeed head and shoulders above X this year actually. Hopefully X can pull it off again.

How weird would it be for X to win state in an UPSET!?!?!?!? lol

Why would you want St. X to win again? They win at everything. I go to a public school and I dislike the recruiting ability of private schools. Even if St. X will lose to St. Charles, another private school, I'm just glad somebody is going to take them down.

One word: Cincinnati.

I did a projection based on the current state top 20 times posted on swimmeet.com for StX vs StC and came up with StX ahead by about 40 points. A bunch of assumptions had to be made such as what two events each top swimmer would enter and what relays they would choose for their top swimmers. I think I ended up with StC ahead in two relays, but not all three. University has a chance to be a relay winner also, but who knows. Another factor is what events someone like Lincoln Fahrbach chooses...he could swim and win the 200 free instead of the 50 free.

Remember at their most recent meeting at the Big-8 Meet StX beat StC. It will be closer this year, but I think StX is still the favorite. If one of their top swimmers gets sick and doesn't qualify for state like last year, it could mean the difference between first and second place.

By saying they are "not planning" to win might just be emphasizing it won't be easy this year.

Having a family member who was an All American swimmer at St X, I can tell you that St. X does not "recruit" swimmers. Great academics and a swimming tradition second to none makes guys WANT to swim for St. X. St. Charles has an VERY impressive team this year but never count out St. X. Remember when St. X beat heavily favored Upper Arlington several years ago?? It will be an uphill battle but they will not go to State planning to lose. It will be a great meet!

What is the politically correct word that can be used, in a discussion with a StX person present, that describes the ability of a private school to have a student population from a wide variety of public school districts? There is always some adverse reaction to the word "recruit". If an athlete from a GMC middle school is "recruited" to a GCL school based on the perception of a higher quality sports program, what word would you use to replace "recruited"? I'm not saying anyone is "recruited". I'm just curious what word has less negative connotations, but still describes the nature of a private school's ability to draw students from a much wider geographic area than a public school.

Hey, that sounds better than the Thesaurus choices I found such as "lure" or "entice" which can both have negative connotations.

Are private schools able to "appeal" to prospective students with financial aid or reduced tuition or work/study programs? I know one of my relatives was offered free tuition for their children if the parent became an employee of the private high school.

You have to get into X before any financial aid is administered whatsoever. Work study is optional, and doesn't really amount to much. And being the employee of the school is pretty standard most places. Even some colleges.

There were some fast times made at the Southwest Classic this weekend too. It looks like StX has updated their times and they appear in the state rankings at swimmeet.com. I don't know why Moeller's times from the same meet don't show up.

200 free relay:
1:25.97 StC
1:26.61 StX
1:27.50 Solon
1:28.36 University
1:28.57 Moeller
1:29.22 Mason

400 free relay:
3:12.08 StX
3:12.51 StC
3:12.70 Moeller
3:12.97 Solon
3:13.06 University
3:14.08 Mason

X does have a bigger ability to recruit (i assume this is meant in the legal appealing to prospective students through the school's merits sort of way). But it is an advantage they give to themselves and the alumni pay for through their incredible support for the school...

If you feel cheated by all means cheer against us, or send some money to your school of choice... in the spirit of competition I invite it.

But I would hope that beyond that you don't hold X in contempt for their effort and success and don't kid yourself into thinking that X is "given" anything. They have earned it, sometimes through a few (generous donations from Keating), sometimes through many (the team and coaches who do the winning) but it's all there.

 take it easy, man. We've handled the recruiting allegations, no need to post it on four different threads.

Hang in there Aquabomber08. The same tired anti-St X arguments get soooo old.
