View Full Version : Negatives of Buckeye Youth Football

I've been following these discussions for the last couple of months and wanted to add some of the negatives about the new leauge that some may not understand.
No 2nd graders. How many kids will go to nearby communities that offer tackle football for 7 year olds?
No 8th graders. With budget cuts, many schools are at risk of losing their middle school teams. Where do these kids turn to?
BIG age discrepancy in league. Kids could play against others who are almost 3 years older because they go by grades and not ages.
Virtually no special teams. No kickoffs. Free 20 yard kick instead of punt through 6th grade. Passing XP worth as much as kicking XP.
Limited defensive alignments by rule (8 players in the box) & linebackers and DBs have to be off the line of scrimmage.
Huge travel distance between communities. Doylestown, Richfield, Canal Fulton, and Green.
Up to 47 players on a roster limit playing time even with two games. How many coaches kids get to play 8 quarters in both varsity and JV?
No weight limit will drive away smaller kids. Unless a community offers a weight limit league and an unlimited weight league, they are going to lose more smaller kids than the number of big kids they pick up.
Unknown leadership. This new league is being driven by people who were disenchanted by two different leagues in the last 4 years.
Big kids will no longer be able to play skill positions. Skill position weight limits are lower in Buckeye Youth Football than they are for Suburban Youth Football.
This list is being provided for those that are seriously considering making the jump. Suburban Youth Football has some serious problems that need addressed and a change of leadership would be a good first step but this new league is not the answer.

Here is a rebuttal
1 2nd graders will play tackle, parents coach request
2 we are not having a 7th or 8th team doesn't matter
3 how many kids fail three years in grade school
4 you have the option to punt, also Jr high doesn't kick off anyway
5 teaching kids how to block head up is a bad thing?
6 You didn't add Ellet, Springfield or green
7 I guess another team will be added red, blue and grey
8 No proven fact, what about lake? Oh yea, I thought there wasn't that many big kids out there who don't get a chance to play.
9 League is being run by a very successful business owner
10 c-team 2nd thru 4th 110 pnd skill position 1 pound every week thereafter
black stripe unlimited
b-team 5th thru 6th 120 pnd skill position 1pound every week thereafter
black stripe unlimited
I will send a rule book to any parent in Springfield if they want one. Just email me a adress to springfieldspartans2008@yahoo.com

Here is a rebuttal
1 2nd graders will play tackle, parents coach request
1 Great, 2nd graders could potentially play against kids who could be in 5th grade if they weren't held back
2 we are not having a 7th or 8th team doesn't matter
2. So kids go without football for two years?? Great concept!!
3 how many kids fail three years in grade school
3 You tell me! And then tell me what you are talking about? A kid with a November birthday gets heldback and he could be almost 3 years older than the youngest kids. FOUR years older if you are including 2nd graders!!! Brilliant!! Using grades is a recipe for failure.
4 you have the option to punt, also Jr high doesn't kick off anyway
4 It's dumb that junior high doesn't kick and you guys are continuing this failed concept.
5 teaching kids how to block head up is a bad thing?
5 Kids are smart. Let them show you and you might be surprised how much they pick up.
6 You didn't add Ellet, Springfield or green
Green??? Look again. Ellet and Springfield would be smart to think twice or Tallmadge, Mogadore, and Field will raid all your best players, especially the 2nd graders.
7 I guess another team will be added red, blue and grey
7 Huh?
8 No proven fact, what about lake? Oh yea, I thought there wasn't that many big kids out there who don't get a chance to play.
8 Huh?
9 League is being run by a very successful business owner
9 Ted Stepien was a succesful business owner too. If he's so succesful, why is he running from the tough competition of Massillon and North Canton and filling it up with Doylestown, Canal Fulton, and Richfield.
10 c-team 2nd thru 4th 110 pnd skill position 1 pound every week thereafter
black stripe unlimited
10 c your own rules state 100 pounds. SYF is 112.
b-team 5th thru 6th 120 pnd skill position 1pound every week thereafter
black stripe unlimited
10 b SYF is 123.
No offense, but when is Springfield going to take on a challenge and stop running? It's time to get down to the nasty work of growing your programs and stop moving to weaker leagues just so you can compete. There once was a time when Springfield was respectable in high school sports. With the fear you guys are showing, it's little wonder you have a tough time winning even in one of the weakest conferences in the state -- the Portage Trail Conference.

Don't be sore, we have been in your league how long? I Guess we should keep trying syfl out , those 20 something years have done so much for us. Time for change. We don't look at the way you portray it. We see a bright future for sbyf. Anonymous my rear end. Do you really have to insult my town because we lose. Thats why I will try my hardest to recruit other syfl teams. That right there will push me to go to other teams.

Let me get right down to it here.
1)- so there are going to be deals made between coaches and parents on whether or not to allow a 2nd grader to play…………what happened to including “all of the kids?”
2) when your levy does not pass and Middle School Football is cut again, what are your 7th and 8th graders to do……….and if Ellet comes over, they don’t have a Middle School program, what are they to do?
3) The age difference is a real issue, do the math, you have 3rd /4th playing together and 5th/6th playing together, if you have an old 6th grader and a young 5th grader, the difference could be close to 3 years. Kids being held back hasn’t even been taken into consideration here. If it were, you could easily have a 3 years difference.
4) Special teams are 1/3 of the game. The Middle School not kicking off has nothing to do with it. I do see that punts are free plays according to their rules, unless things have changed.
5) If your intentions are for the bigger kids to get experience, and so that you can teach lineman how to block, then how is man over man defense going to teach them that? As I stated before, you could teach a Tuba to block straight up.
6) Travel distance is Huge for going to most away games. How can that fact be debated. Granted Revere is only up 77, but so is Lake Erie, and I wouldn’t consider that close.
7) I cant answer you on that, you aren’t that clear.
8) Do you have any information leading us to believe that this point isn’t true?
9) Your successful business owner has 3 other partners, he doesn’t own it himself. I thought that there were to be 2 individuals from each community, each having an equal say, not a dictatorship.
10) Once again, you are limiting who can play skill positions, and the weight limits are lower than that of SYF at the same age levels
SYF B-team 9 year olds (4th grade)- current limit*-112 lb.
*-denotes possible change for 2008
SYF A-team 10 year olds (5th grade)-current limit*-114 lb.
SYF-JV-team 11/12 year olds (6th/ 7th grade)- current limit*-123lbs.
So your weight limits are actually more stringent for skilled positions.
The SYFA uses the Ohio High School Athletic Association rules for play, with few modifications.

The kickoff rule in in the OHSAA football rules, no 7th or 8th grade team is aloud to kickoff.

Not sore at all. Just frustrated that you guys are falling for a sales pitch by a successful business owner (your own words). Springfield has a great legacy but it's going down the tubes with every poor decision. Jumping leagues won't change the core problems in your community. What would be nice to see is more volunteer work in your community pushing the football program instead of trying to divide the town with a promise of better football down the road if they just let bigger kids play the game.

Way to speak up, we will take all of the kids who don't want to play at the byf. If the kids are good enough they will play with our starters. I don't want to stir the pot but Green is on top of our game. Good luck Omni on a good season, Don't give up the fight, Springfield will come together after they see whats being pulled over there heads.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the BYF league. Some of these people can't stand that the facts don't support their view and when they are faced with that they refuse to look at them and usually resort to unfounded accusations or flat out personal attacks and bashing. It's sad really.
Unfortunately, I believe that Springfield will end up being a split community as Green is. Most people dont even realize what's going on either, or they dont wish to stand up.........I could go on but I'll be nice, though ignorance really isn't a valid excuse. Nice post.

"Way to speak up" that's the pot calling the kettle black, isnt it? Glad to see there are starting to be more people willing to speak up.

It must be easy for you to dog on Springfield like that. If Green didn't have all the golf courses in it all those doctors and lawyers that moved in and pay all those taxes wouldn't be there and you would still be a little farm town. The success of Green is because they don't have to struggle for $$$$$. It wasn't that long ago that Green was nothing special, just another win for us at the high school level. We beat Green 2 out of 3 times when I played in the eighties. Springfield moved out of the NBC because all the other schools are so far away, not because it was to tough of a league. How many times have Green went as far as Carrollton or Minerva to play a game? If the PTC is such an easy league why doesn't Green schedule Southeast or Field and see what you can do with them? My last question is, if your name is Green, why are your colors orange & black?
Smashmouth#1
12-12-07, 10:29 PM
Wait, nope........I'm not a doctor or even a lawyer and I moved into Green. Hang on, let me doublecheck again, nope.....not a million dollars in my checkbook either. There are a lot more middle class people in this town than you think with common sense values that budget themselves accordingly. Are there those that have the "keep up with the Jones's" mentality? Yeah, but you have that everywhere. The success of Green and isn't because of the money....it's because of talent and hard work.
Face facts, Green beat the dogsnot out of Springfield this year, and almost everyone else beat the dogsnot out of Green.
And our colors are orange and black thanks to Paul Brown.

Time to add more negatives:
Quick rule changes to encourage new members to join. How many members are going to have their rules revoked that favored them when a new community is being persuaded?
No longer a community based league. Kids from all over Akron and surrounding communities will now be allowed to suit up for Ellet. It's no longer where the kid lives, now it's where they go to school.
The polster is handing out rule books, I got mine overnight. It says here as long as the student goes to the school in the district, he or she is eligible. Sounds good to me.

Wow, I did'nt know about the quick rule changes, maybe I'll go down to Cincinnati and recruit..... opps wait a minute, that would be state wide instead of regional. My bad. Happy Holidays Synonymous!
like i said before why do you green people care so much about springfield? you bash us every chance you get. its like a back handed compliment. you guys are really petty, calling us ignorant, bashing about spelling. grow up. there must be something in it for you. i know why not call us red necks and hill billies like your nice little city has before?

In your post you don't even deal with any issues. All you want to do is rant and rave and tell the Green People to go home because they don't agree with you.........if you don't like it, don't read it.........or deal with the issues and dont attack people or tell them to go home.
Green people are involved here because it directly effects Green, as well as Tallmadge, Falls, Field, Stow, etc. etc. etc. That's why.

Wait, who was the one that told all of the Green people to go back to their own forum? No, that's not trying to stifle anything at all. I never once tried to stifle you. I told you to deal with the issues. You don't have a good response, so you go on a personal attack. That's how you deal with it. You probably think Hillary or Barak are good Presidential choices too, dont ya.
I've never once said that people who want a BYF league are ignorant and spreading negative propaganda. Unfounded accusations, flatout lies and incorrect facts, and pure speculation passed off as facts, yes, and I dispute those on a daily basis. I don't go in a tear people down and tell them to go home because I dont agree.
As far as you being a big boy, that's fine, don't whine like a little one then........it's like a bad song on the radio or a TV show that you don't like......if you don't like it, you change the channel.......If you don't like Green people's posts don't read them..........and it really is that simple.

Sorry, your reasoning for Northwests turnaround was not because of the BYF. Its called coaching, dedication from the players and community support.
