View Full Version : What can you do to help Springfield Football?

I've been reading a lot of whats been going on in Springfield, and it kinda makes me sick, hearing all the bickering going on between Parents, Coaches and fans of Springfield Football. I understand, everybody, is not going to like everybody, but the bickering is not helping the cause. Its no secret, Football in Springfield is at an all time low. I've experienced it first hand with my son 2 years ago, and it was disheartening to see him go through such a miserable High School carreer. This should have been the time of his life, instead, he couldn't wait to graduate and move on. I told myself, I would not let that happen with my next 2 sons, so I got heavily involved with Springfield Suburban Youth Football to try and make it better for out future H.S. players.
My question to the rest of the Community is, what are you doing to try and make things better for our kids? Have you offered to join the Booster Club at the High School? Have you offered to help out in the Youth League? Have you gone the xtra mile, to do anything, to help any of the Youth Programs around the Township? Have you helped out with the School Levy Committe?
Look, I don't want this to turn into a bashing thread of any sort. I would like this to be a meaningful, insightful, mature conversation on how we all can get Springfield back on track.
I will start by mentioning that Coach Imamarino needs more time to develope his Team. One year is not enough time, to judge a coach on if he is succesful or not. He needs more time to sell his Program to the Players, Parents and fans. We don't need to run him out of town, because of one season. If his Health allows, I feel needs to be given more time to turn this thing around.

A friend of mine is putting a myspace page together for spartan football. it will be springfield spartans 2008. I figure instead of trying to pass a bunch of papers out we can send out bulletins and blogs on myspace. I want to put every kids profile from 2nd grade up to 12th grade. I think it will work out. the page is under construction but we are able to have a frinds list. If you have any pics send them to springfieldspartans2008@aol.com. The Starboyz are also going to do another show. We have to figure out how to capitalize on it. During the last show we didnt even have sighn up forms available. We werent to organized.www.myspace.com/springfieldspartans
This will be the one and only post and to save time and gossip I used my name to enter it.
I came up hear and read near every blog
Nothing was more disheartening to read , so hear is my .02$
First and foremost THANK YOU to all the coaches and assistants in SYF.
I understand how hard it is to run from work and get to the field to VOLUNTEER and in no way be compensated for nothing more than your passion for the game and your never ending love for the kids.:)
For all the Volunteers behind the scenes, getting the stands repaired and painted, getting the concession stand ready for the season and supplied with goodies for everyone, getting all the equipment out and ready for home games long before anyone else arrives.:)
For all the parents who care enough to show up and help when they said they would or even jump in there and help when no one else was there.:)
Thank You for all the support and care for the KIDS. did I say Kids ? Oh ya and for all those who have whined about all these exceptional VOLUNTEER well Sorry I've got nothing for you.
Support your SYF it is the High school team of the future !
Support your High School, if your here now Your child will probably be there in the future.
If you have suggestions put them in writing and give reasonable explanation on why you think they will work.
Otherwise miss work, miss family and miss what may have been a personal matter and VOLUNTEER.
This is about the Kids This is about the support and belief that there is something for the kids to do, to learn team work, To realize the beauty of a natural high like winning and also the tears on there cheeks when they loose.
There are many things to be Thankful for , but for now let me Thank All the Great people who have done Great things for and with our Kids.
For those who have had nothing good to say about our football system let me quote a great line from A Few Good Men.
" We would rather you just said Thank You , otherwise pick up a football and stand the line "
So for all that have been mentioned and all that have VOLUNTEERED
THANK YOU

Polster,
I think the Website is a good idea. SSYF has a Website already up, but I don't think there was enough time in the day, to keep it updated with pictures, stories and things of that nature for some of the current Volunteers.
I think this is a good start. We could update the current SSYF site, or create a new one as mentioned by Polster and make it entertaining for all people to view and read. I know I personally, have many pictures that could be downloaded and would not mind putting together a season Overview for the Varsity team. If you look at Tallmadges' Websites, they are a lot of fun to read and very informative. It would take a few Volunteers to take on this task. It sounds like the Polster has something in the works already.
Also, with the Starboyz already agreeing to perform next year as a Start Up fundraiser, again, this is the positive feedback I was looking for. Keep them coming.

Hey Irish, who is in charge of the web site and how do I get ahold of them? I may be able to help out and keep it updated a bit. I'm not sure that a myspace page is in the best interest, you are going to have every crack-head and perv messing with it... point to be made look at Springfields first myspace friend... Tom from California. I'm not sure but I don't think Tom has much interest in Springfield's football program. Maybe if we could get an active forum on the current SYF web site all could be handled from there.

Well polster so I didn't know who invented myspace... who cares when I was born. The point was SYF already has a web sit up and running if we could get it updated often enough and a forum added to it, and let parents know it is there and we could get more input and interest. I think It would make things much easier. I would be willing to bet that maybe 20% of the parents even know there is a SYF website. Look at all the posts in Yappi and I would be willing to bet that less than 5% of parents know about Yappi.

The page is aimed at the kids not parents. How many kids care about yappi. This way we can get a message to kids to tell there parents about yappi. Kids are not going on to syf page. Its boring. Furthermore a kid doesnt care about grown up issues. Hopefully I can get every kid in springfield on a friends list. So easy to email or blog evry kid in a instant. I asked you your age because your not intouch with the power of cyberspace.

I plan on putting together some sort of Speed and Agility Camp for younger kids over the offseason. Ages will probably range from 11 through maybe 14 or 15. It will not be anything formal, there will not be any cost for it and will kinda be spur of moment kind of thing, like if we have a break in the weather over the winter. I would like to put together a 1 hour Camp, maybe once a week or twice a month, full of Cone Drills, and technique sessions to improve a childs footwork along with improving their speed. Again, I will not charge for this. I'm no expert on Speed and Agility, but I've been to quite a few Camps and Combines to help kids.
If theres anything I noticed over the last 5 - 6 years at the H.S., is out Football team lacks some serious speed.
I'll keep people posted on this website, as to when it might start.

Irish, are you interested in getting me the contact info about our web site? If not just say so and I'll let it go.
I asked you your age because your not intouch with the power of cyberspace.
I'm absolutely in touch with the power of cyberspace (don't make statements about someone you know nothing about). I know plenty about myspace, like it keeps me busy in the evenings making a few extra bucks cleaning all the crap off of people's pc's because their kid "accitentally clicked on something while on myspace and my computer has been acting funny." And many people do not let their kids on myspace. All I wanted to do was help out a bit and try to get our existing web site running and making it a place where people would go to in order to find out what's going on with the football program. I don't really want to go any further on the subject, the myspace site is up and I hope it works out for you.

Good thread!
You all can make a difference!
I wish you luck!
Take It 2 Tha Bank
11-07-07, 08:20 PM
All of this is fine and dandy, and Tha Bank commends all of you for your desires and intentions of improving the football program. BUT< you must put alot of your eforts on getting the word out that the community has to pass a levy or al of your hard work is going to only help the kids sit on their rear ends, or travel to another school to play.
This thread is interesting to me. I had a long conversation with a local AD recently that absolutely HATES Yappi.com. He believes that it divides the community and offers nothing back. I respect his opinion but completely disagree.
Now to why this is important to Springfield:
There are two factors that are important to success of high school sports;
1. Desire of the kids - Some kids have a natural desire to compete. Keep those kids in the program and you are heading in the right direction. Other kids need motivation to develop into good athletes. Instill that desire early on and they will be good athletes. Far too many kids in the weaker high schools don't care about sports and get themselves into trouble away from the playing field. Being good in sports is a positive for the community.
2. Desire of the parents - this is the most important and the most difficult to control. Parents that don't care have kids that don't care or learn not to care. Parents who enjoy sports and have a desire to see their kids succeed will provide opportunities for their kids and their kid's friends. The problem is keeping them in the circle of sports for that community. Many times this desire pushes the parents to send their kids to other schools that are more successful.
So where does this site come in? This site keeps the interest level high in the community. It pushes kids who love the sport to keep competing so they can get better than the people putting their program down. It pushes parents to keep their kids in the program and provide additional opportunities. This site let's others know that there are numerous people willing to work to build a better community (for sports and more).
My suggestions for Springfield:
1. Let others know about this site and encourage them to get on here and voice their opinion. You can create your own forum on the SYF website but it's alot of work and hard to get people to post. On here, you have people from many other Suburban Youth programs coming into each others forum to discuss things.
2. Stay positive.
3. Offer more opportunities. Speed clinics are a great idea. Anyone that has the ability should create a website for individual teams. Seeing their names on the web creates alot of excitement for the kids AND parents.
4. Never turn away anyone from the sport. The more kids involved, the better the overall program. It may hurt the individual teams success in the short term but will help the high school in the long run. Twenty kids in each grade (10-12) at the high school is 60 kids on the team. With that size of a team, you are bound to have success against the smaller schools.
5. Let people know about the successes of the individuals playing at the higher levels. Someone makes it onto a DIII college football team, let everyone know about it. Kids like to know that there have been successes at this school.

The idea is in its early stages still. It will be open to all kids, within the age limits(to be set later). I'm going to try and keep it free for all, but if weather doesnt permit, I may need to charge a little, just for indoor usage, such as the Spano Dome. It probably will not start till February/March and I'll more than likely have it held on Sundays, to keep from interfering with Baseball. I'm going to keep it to kids, who are beginning their maturation stages.

Ragemaker,
Patti is the lady who runs the Website. I'd bet she would not have a problem, with getting some assistance with the site. As I stated earlier, I have many pictures of the JV Football Team, that could be added. Send me a PM, on how to get a hold of you and I'll put you in contact with her. Once my season is done, I will have more time to assist also. I appreciate the gesture.

Yappi,
you and I go way back, and I enjoy the site very much, although the jury is still out, on whether I think these Websites are good or bad.
If people could just keep their posts to informative and/or positive, things would be ok. Problem is, once people hear about these sites, their first 25 posts are nothing but complaints and bashing. I know, because I fell into the same thing 2 years ago, but learned, that is not what should be aired on here. I could live with complaints, but people tend to "call" other people out without having accurate or all information necessary to make an accurate assesment of the situation. Many Posts are made based on Rumors, and bad Rumors can tear a Community apart. People need to be objective and open minded when reading ro writing Posts.
When I heard about your site a few years back, I told you I would help spread the word in Springfield, to help support Yappi. Now, I'm not so sure that was a good idea. A few weeks ago, many people from the Community finally heard about Yappi, and jumped on here and started calling people out. I understand everyone has an opinion, but keep in mind, there are peoples reputation, character and feelings at stake, and one bad rumor can really destroy a persons life. I just hope people think about what they post, before hitting the "Submit Reply" button.

Those rumors are already running rampant in the community. They always have and they always will. It's not until they get on here that things start getting sorted out. Those first 25 posts for new users are typical for any community and what I've seen from the communities that matured on here is the old-timers put them into place much quicker and settle them down.

I'll be totally honest, of all the communities in the Akron area, the Springfield community is in the most trouble. They need more than a couple people to step up and right the ship. From what I've seen on here, there are a few people starting to take those steps but it's far from being successful. They need to build upon each success and not get too negative every year. As an example, I've seen people complaining about the band because of their shirts. While I understand this, people shouldn't "hate" them. Instead, they should congratulate them for their success. I would rather have a good band and below average football team than a below average band and football team.
The site does put a community under a microscope but from what I've seen from communities that have stepped up in the last 6 years, this leads to more interest and success in those communities for their sports teams. While this site is not responsible for that success, it's an ingredient that makes things easier. Of course, there are going to be bumps along the way to that success. I think this is very similar to the coaches and ADs that get to know the writers at the bigger newspapers across the state. Getting their teams and players recognition helps create more interest in their programs for the younger kids. The difference between a site like this and getting to know the writers so well is that many coaches and ADs haven't quite figured out these type of sites while getting in good with the writers has been going on for almost a century.

But things like this split a Community/School, not unite and show support. Most everyone in this area is aware, that Springfield has an excellent Band. But in recent hard times for the Football team, a shirt like this can show "selfishness" and create opinions about what the Bands "agenda" really is. I don't think people hate the Band, just sometimes question where their support really lies. Look, I enjoy watching the band. I think its a vital part of a wonderful Friday evening or Saturday afternoon football game, but I just think sayins like this are appropriate.
And trust me, if you had to go watch a High School Football team lose 37 out of 40 games, your opinion might change about what you would rather have.:D It gets rather depressing.
I know that it divided the community. I heard that from several people but this was a great opportunity for Springfield to come together. Maybe the football coach could have gotten the football team to go to a band show and support their band. Maybe the band director starts working closer with the football coach and comes out with a shirt to support both programs. Maybe the band starts to play a new song that the football team does something special on the field when it's playing (ie going into the 4th quarter song). I know at most schools it's not cool to support the band but this could be an opportunity to help build the community.

Man Irish, I had to read this twice. You scared me there.
On speed and agility clinics. Over here in Tallmadge we have had a couple over the past three years. We have rented the Turner Club (Cost the kids about $2 per session) and also had a private company do it for us. I think that cost about $20 or $25 per kid.
I wouldn't go under the age of 11. You have to watch the pounding on the knee joints when they are this young. Try and stay away from any "box jumps".
Kids will love it and it will help out greatly.

I don't think you are ever going to get "Band" people and "Football" people together. It's like that everywhere and it's been that way forever.
Let's face it halftime is for everyone to go use the restroom and feed your face. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less.

If there was no football there wouldnt be band. If there wasnt a band there still would be football. I seen how ignorant the band director was at the revenna game. These guys start playing right before the ball is snapped. And throws the snapcount out of wack. They do not pay attention to the game.

Speaking of that. We had a friend that went with us to the Wadsworth game and he actually said something to the Asst. Band Director about playing while Tallmadge (us) was on offense. HHHHEEEELLLLOOOOOO!!!!
How does playing music, while your team has the ball, going to help them?

irish, i agree whole heartedly with the need for speed/form running training there is a b-team coach that is very well versed @ teaching form running i will contact him and see if he is interested in helping out i'm sure he will be he has been coaching in the ssyf system for years and his boy played on b-team this year. i know for a fact it helps i saw the difference in my son this year he coached my son for 2 years and when he first got him he had no speed and ran with his arms hanging down kind of like a toddler runs simply teaching the arm pump increased his speed. i like where we are going on this thread.... i have to agree with yappi on the whole proccess of the community going thru a maturation period on this web site first starts the bashing and complants which is where we are at this point and then with threads like this comes a healing/solution time. lets begin that healing springfield lets get more people with good intentions involved. who cares if they have ties to the system thru a child anyone who wants to be involved for non political reasons should be welcomed into ssyf many hands make light work and we need many hands because there is nothing easy about the turn around needed in springfield on every level.... i don't have a problem with the band but it kills me to see a tuba line that averages 250 and an offensive line that averages 170. nuff said

The band director actually sent the kids to the bus with 2:30 to go in the game. A mom saw it and went up to him and tore him up. After a couple of minutes of bashing by another mom or two, he went to the buses and yelled at the kids to get back out and watch the game. Like it was their fault!
They got to the fence at the gun.
The band is not to blame for his problems this year. He needs to watch how Copley and Wadsworth do it. A band can be a part of the celebration that is Friday Night Football. They don't have to be a disruption.

All I have to say is "Buck the Fand" I agree that without football there is no band. No halftime show. It does suck when your team has the ball and they're trying to run a play and the band starts playing. If I had a dollar for every falsse start that caused I'd be rich. Why do they only do that when it's their own team with the ball? Do it when the other team has the ball. Wait, that would be the band helping the team?????? The other thing that pisses me off is watching the majority of the "band parents" leav ing after halftime. God forbid you stay for a whole game! I think that any little band --- caught with a shirt that degrades, or belittles, the football team should be imediately kicked out of the game, or school, or wherever they may be!
i have to agree when the parents of the band just stay for the half time And leave, that just stinks. i mean what is so great about the band any way? i understand that the parents are proud of their kids, but come on.
