Beavercreek wins this one 1-0 in OT and claims the district title.
Beavercreek dominated most of the game but could not finish. Fairmont had several nice runs, but the 'Creek defense shut them down time and time again. It was apparent that Fairmont really, really wanted this game. They kept the pressure up and never let down. Their fans were loud and supportive.
The Beavers managed to control the ball most of the second half as well. Fairmont had two really good chances, but could not zero in on the goal. 'Creek had a couple of excellent chances including shooting the ball from beyond the 18, but couldn't net the ball either.
Beavercreek took possession of the ball at the start of the OT and never relinquished it. Two and a half minutes in, Tyler Pollock took the ball up the left side of the field at full speed with 2 Fairmont defenders on him. He crossed the ball to TJ Badiru, a surprise starter for the 2nd half, who drove the ball past the goalie for the golden goal.
I was not impressed the quality of the refereeing in the game at all. Pollock had a break away in the first half, was two steps inside the goal, had beat the last defender and was taken down from behind. A foul was called and 'Creek got a free kick outside the box. No PK, no card, both of which were warranted. Phil Wagner, one of the Creek defenders, was taken down hard from behind later in the game. No whistle, nothing. Mid-way through the second half, Beavercreek was attacking the Fairmont goal. One of the defenders committed a handball in the box; no whistle. Play continued, and one of the Fairmont forwards committed an intentional handball. The whistle was blown but Beavercreek was only awarded a free kick. These were just the worst examples; there were more.
I am sure that Firebird fans will be able to list just as many blown calls that went against them because they were very vocal from their side of the field.
There was a measure of the revenge factor in this game. Last year, Fairmont took the district title over Beavercreek. This year, 'Creek takes home the title and gets to keep playing.
Next up, Lakota West, who had several players watching the Beavers tonight.
Go Beavers!:)
