Forgive me if I get off of the TX/FL/CA/OH(I'll throw in IL for you Chicago) threads for a momnet, while I talk about the greatness of the game. Not saying it can't doesn't happen in other places, but it did last night in my town.

OK here you go.

As many of you know I am not a SLC fan. I live in Highland Village, which is in the Flower Mound Marcus school zone. That's my wife's alma mater and the '97 State Champion. Not really a relevant National school, but who really cares. (Side note, their drum line is the eight or nine time National Champion, won on the field as it were. I'd encourage you to check out this link and maybe the '03 or '04 show. Also they won the '07 National Title in soccer.)

As far as football, they have been pretty down since the Title.

This week they are playing the hated Lewisville Fighting Farmers(another team that has been pretty down since their mid 90's titles) in the annual Battle of the Axe. Here are some articles:

It's a great tradition, stolen from another local rivalry, but whatever. It is also Homecoming weekend, so me, the wife, and the tow kids went down to the Homecoming parade.

All of the groups were represented, the ROTC, the band, Tennis team, the team. All road on floats, throwing candy to the kids lining the streets. I'd guess about 5 thousand lined the street in front of the school.

Very cool scene. Lots of families, and elemntary/JH kids playing football in any space available. Picture perfect weather

I just kind of looked around and was happy. None of this, Calpreps crap or the '04 Colerain-'05 SLC debate.

On a random Wedensday night a ton of people came together for a good purpose and were happy about it. We stayed for the pep rally with more than 3K or so until the kids had enough and headed home

Tomorrow night there should be about 17 thousand or so out at Texas Stadium "Kicking AXE"! One side(Marcus) will try to "Bring back the AXE", while the Farmer faithful will be trying to "Keep the AXE".

Two schools, that probably would never otherwise get mentioned on this board will fill the stadium(not quite in this case, but you get the point) and be part of everything(almost) that is right with HS football.

Drove by the HS on the way home. The JV game was getting under way.

The JV teams play for the hatchett, and the Freshmen play for the butter knife.

No word on the butter knife or hatchet, but THE AXE IS BACK!!

Marcus took it home with a 17-6 victory at Texas Stadium. I did not hear any numbers, nor see anything in the paper today but the lower bowl was packed to the end zones on the Marcu side. Through the 5-10 on the Lewisville side. A lot bigger than I expected. My guess 20-22k. Pretty impressive.

Not really important, but the way To TX Stadium is the exact same for both team, which meant stupid traffic. Oh well.

To be honest, the game was kind of boring. 10-0 at the half bothe teams kind of playing not to lose. Lewisville got the ball down 10-0 w/about three minutes left and scored on a 86 yard pass. Marcus recovered the ensuing onside kck and got a couple of long runs by the soph RB Stephen Hopkins(watch of him later, Also remind me to tell a story about him and private schools).

So taking that last minute yardage here were the stats:

Lew Mar
1st 11 14
R 165 204
P 120 56

LIke I said not real entertaining match. There were three blocked field goals though.

It was a great atmosphere, and like I said earlier is what is right about HS football.

In other news, SLC allowed 24 points to a 1-6 team.....
Let's discuss how many were big and how many were little. It was 65-10 going into the fourth.

The score was 55-10 at halftime. All of the key SLC starters were gone before the 2nd quarter ended. The 2nd and 3rd teamers got lots of playing time last night. Northwest scored 14 points late in the 4th quarter.

SLC had 4 drives that lasted 21 seconds or less (game clock) in the first half. Riley Dodge ran for 3 TDs and passed for 3 TDs. Tre Newton had 158 yards on 11 carries.

Northwest HS has a brand new stadium that is nice. This is the 2nd season they have played there. http://www.texasbob.com/stadium/stadium.php?id=299

a valid question at this point is: Will ANY Texas team hold SLC under 40 points?

Q. What's a key starter?

A. That's one you take out in the first half. Obviously, if he's still playing in the second half, he's not a key starter.

Pied, you may need to add a rule to your list for this.

Not until the playoffs. SLC's district is very week this year. They are playing cream puff defenses.
The only florida team to do it is a state championship calibur team.

The playoffs will be a different ball game for SLC,

SLC has had 8 starters injured this year so many guys who were previously subs are now starting. As a result it's harder to know when all of the starters have been pulled. All of the guys that I recognize as starters were gone by late 2nd quarter. However, I'm not sure that every guy who started this game was taken out at that time. I just don't know. Perhaps my choice of words (key starters) was bad.

The bottom line is that Coach Wasson called of the dogs and substituted freely before half time.

In 2006 SLC's district was 27-10 against non-district opponents. The four playoff teams advanced one, two, four and six rounds deep in the playoffs.

In 2007 SLC's district is 10-14 against non-district opponents so far.

In two weeks SLC plays 5-1 Grapevine at their place. I don't see Grapevine holding SLC under 45 points.

I know what happened in 2006.

I really did not know much about Grapevine 07, but I know the other teams in district suck 2007. SLC district sux this year.
