It's received virtually no press, even locally, but this weekend here in Las Vegas, something called the "High School Gridiron Tour" is making its debut.

To be played at Sam Boyd Stadium, home of the woeful UNLV RUnnin Rebels, the event will feature doubleheaders Friday and Saturday evening -

(Records are from 2006 season)
Friday
5:30 PM San Francisco Archbishop Riordan (4-6) vs. Everett, WA, Archbishop Murphy (10-1)
8:00 PM Las Vegas Bishop Gorman (6-5) vs. Seattle Kennedy (13-1)

Saturday
6:00 PM Las Vegas HS (12-2) vs. Madera, CA (7-4)
8:30 PM Clovis, CA, East (12-1) vs. Sandy, UT, Alta (11-3)

While a day-long event is probably an impossibility due to the late August/early September heat here in Las Vegas, it could be interesting to see what sort of event this could grow into. Nevada football isn't traditionally extremely strong, but usually 2 or 3 teams here are good enough to stay on the field against all but the very top tier from California.

The organizers did a pretty good job bringing in somequality teams. Las Vegas is the two-time defending big school state champion in Nevada, while Alta and Kennedy were state runners-up in their respective states last year.

I'm curious to see what the attendance might be like, with the USA basketball team playing both nights (I think), all the regular high school football games going on, and whatever concerts and special events might be in town for the long weekend.

The Clovis East vs. Alta game should put the most talent on the field. east is among the top-ranked teams in Central California, while Alta is #2 in Utah after having lost to the #1 team in the state by a field goal last week.

I probably can't go Friday, but I'm planning to attend on Saturday, and if I make it I'll post my observations here.
