I talked to the head coach this weekend and he was pleased with his mini-camp, but very dissapointed with the numbers. Unfortunately around a dozen kids will be ineligble. I guess the Spartans will have to go with quality and not quantity!

As I stated before, Coach Immarino has his work cut out for him. Once again, in-eligible Athletes will hurt this team this year. Don't look for them to do much this year again. It will take a long time to re-build that program.

He still thinks he can go .500 if those players who said they will go out for football actually show up when double sessions start in August.

Sure hope that those consitioning sessions are being counted as part of their 8 days the state allows. It must be bad a Springfield as they cancelled their scrimmage with Garfield and said they would not be anywhere near ready to sacrimmage at that point. Sad thing to see at Springfield.

GBulldogs06,
I'm going over to Coach Tony's house today for a cook out, so I will check with him and give you some "scoop" when I get home tonight.

The Spartans are getting around 25 kids for their summer work outs. They have been good work outs, but most of the kids are under classmen. The seniors have been a big disappointment, so far. The coach was really ticked off that around 15 will be ineligable because of bad grades. Most of those kids are seniors. He said he had been preaching about good grades for 3months, but the seniors didn't care. That's the part that hurt him.
All of those seniors, mentioned in a earlier post that someone said would have helped, are not comming out. Some are due to ineligibility and some just don't want to play football. He mentioned Lowe, Shoemaker, Barlow, Talbert, Bohon and a few others. He made phone calls to all of these kids and many others, but got all kinds of excuses as to why they don't want to play football.
There was 1 senior who he is very excited about and thinks is a stud. A kid named Tyler Copen. He's 300lb. NT/OG who can move and is strong as a bull! The coach said that he thinks he also has a sweet TB in Jason Clark and Scott Cole has looked good as their QB.
Outside of those 3, the rest are huge question marks. They will find out more when the hitting starts during 2-a-days.
Not exactly a glowing report, but the guy still thinks he can win some games.

25 kids? This is truly dissapointing. I don't think they'll be able to have a team, with this low of a number. You gotta figure, they'll lose a few to injury and then have a few more quit around 2 a days. I'll be really surprised if they have a team this year.
Lowe- started LB last year
Talbert- Started Fullback and LB last year
Barlow- Started Tailback Soph and Junior year(before quitting)
Bohon- Started TE last year
Shoemaker- utility player. Saw some time at RB as a Soph and Junior year(before quitting)
All inelligible. Its a sad, sad day in Springfield.

Shackleford- Started DE as a Soph. Did not play last year because didn't like the coach.
Abrams- Started DE as a Soph. Did not play last year because didn't like the coach.
Probably will not play. Can you blame them?

Yes, you can. Not playing cause you don't like a coach is the oldest excuse in the book.

Sorry, I ain't buying it.

Please don't flame me; it's just my opinion. If you're a fb player, what you want more than anything else is to PLAY-doesn't matter the coach, the team, or what color uniforms you wear. You want to strap it on and go.

Agreed.

I know that "sweet" Tailback mentioned earlier in this thread. Good athlete, but my son said he's a quitter. He won't finish the season. When they start off 0-5 he'll be injured then quit.

On this one, Shiloh, I disagree with you.
First: If your son is a player on the team, he should be concentrating on HELPING the team get better and not knocking other players with that old negative attitude.
Second: you are taking for granted that the team will go 0-5. Again, negative.
Third: That Clark will be injured. Once more; negative.
And last, but not least, NO QUITTING of any kind is the central theme that Coach Tony told me, he is trying to instill.
I know it must be difficult for the Springfield Community to be positive about anything, BUT GIVE IT A CHANCE!

Emperior,
I admire the positive attitude and the confidence in the new Coach, but before anything positive comes out of the Sports Programs, they will need to pass a Levy. The people of the Township need to understand that. By not passing this levy, it is not only hurting the Kids, but also hurting themselves. Without Sports, the kids will be out looking for stuff to do, and find themslves getting into more trouble.
The Parents of kids who do play sports, are pulling their kids out of the Community and sending them to schools who can offer them a better education as well as an opportunity to excell in Sports. I have witnessed this first hand at the Youth level. There were a handful of football players in Springfield Youth, who have left for other schools for this reason last year. If we don't fix the Schools, this will continue to happen and Springfield sports will continue to suffer.
I like what I hear about the new coach, but I will say it again, he has a huge uphill battle on his hands.

Good Luck to the Spartans in 2007. They will need a lot of it, but if they follow what their coach seems to be preaching about not quitting and giving all they have all the time, they will be winners in the end as they look back on the season.

i think we are looking @ 3 years at least to be a contender of any sort (considering we pass a levy within the next 12 months) if this coach is good they could probably win 2 this year and 5 next but this all rests on the levy passing if it does not all bets are off

FIRST POINT- My son no longer goes to SHS. We both have positive attitudes. We are also intelligent about the situation there. Don't presume to know anything about me or my children.

SECOND POINT- They are about to go 0-10. CHECK

THIRD POINT- I said he'd quit. He did. CHECK

So what do you think now that they look worse than last year?
