Hudson golf coach Rob Yanko resigns
PREP NOTES

Rob Yanko has resigned as head coach of the boys golf program at Hudson High School after 33 seasons.

Yanko, an Akron resident, left his teaching position in June after 35 years at Hudson to teach at Archbishop Hoban.

``It was a tough decision, but it came down to a time commitment,'' said Yanko, who teaches social studies and U.S. history at Hoban. ``I couldn't be at two places at once. I couldn't be the teacher I wanted to be or the coach I wanted to be -- being at two schools.''

Yanko will remain in the game, as a volunteer assistant golf coach at the University of Akron under new coach Tom Porten.

At Hudson, Yanko took 16 teams to the Division I state tournament. The Explorers finished second twice and third twice in his tenure.

Yanko, a Hoban graduate, was a four-year letterman in golf for the Zips in the late 1960s.

16 state tourneys in 33 years is very impressive. Moeller coach Rick Bohne is working on 8 state tournaments in 20 years as of right now, so he would have to take the Crusaders to 8 more in the next 13 years to match Yanko's pace.

For golf the players take the team to state not the coaches, especially in today's age where the most competitive tournaments are not during the high school season.

I disagree, while schools like Moeller and X have had some good players over the last 5-10 years or so the main reason why they are consistently the best teams in Cincy is coaching.

coaching isnt as important in high school because they cant recruit, the only decisions the coaches make are who their top 5 are gunna be and that only affects who goes to state and who doesnt in a limited number of situations

As far as coaching in high school the only thing the coach really does or needs to do is to organize and help put the guys in positive mind sets for the tournaments and help keep them calm during play. As far as actually teaching golf it is not the coaches duty or position to teach fundamentals as all but the Lakota East coach are likely just teachers at their respective schools.
