View Full Version : Springfield vs Southeast

Southeast has been playing well the last few weeks. Their QB looks to be putting up good numbers. This will cause major problems for Springfields Secondary. Lack of pressure on the QB will enable him to pick apart the DB's.
4 more Springfield players quit on Monday, which brings their Varsity number to around 26. Why are kids quiting? Your guess is as good as mine. This program might be in the worst shape it has ever been in. I would not be surprised, if Springfield doesn't even have a Varsity Football Team next year. That spells bad news for the Band. What are they going to do on Friday nights, when there is no halftime?
To all the players sticking it out, I thank you. Your hard work and efforts are not going un-noticed, by me. I know some of you are interested in playing at the College level. I wish you all luck and advise that you continue to work hard and strive towards your goal.

I never condone quitting. My son will NEVER quit a sport in the middle of the season. That is really bad news for Springfield football. It really is all about the halftime you know:laugh:
I advise any players that are trying to play in college to change schools...and do it quickly.

Why? They can't play. They have to sit out.

I am only aware of one, that transferred. I was told it was his parents decision, not because of football. Something about Green being a shorter drive from their home.
As for the quitters, only one was a starter(RT O-Tackle). In my opinion, he wasn't that good anyhow, but it will affect what little depth they already had.
Not sure who number 26 is. I do not believe he plays much Varsity.

Irish...
Even though a player isn't any good, if he is starting, and is lost, that hurts the team. Maybe an underclassman will get an opportunity to play, and get this team fired up a little bit. What they are doing isn't working. Change it up. Let some other kids play and see if it sparks anything. Just my opinion.

It took me a while, but I figured it out. Yes, (approx)26 is total for JV and Varsity.
As you know, there is usually a big drop off in ability, from a Sophmore to a Senior. It takes a special athlete, to be able to get significant minutes on Friday, as a Sophmore. Not very often can you find more than 2 or 3 Sophs, who are ready to play at the Varsity level.(even at Springfield). Tust me when I say, they have changed it up. The coach has tried everyone possible, to find the right fit for the team, and to give the team a chance to compete. Unfortunately, with the numbers being so low, you can only look so far. There just isn't enough talent on the team, to make them successful, and with all the injuries and quitters, it has become even more difficult. There are only 6 or 7 Seniors on the team, 3 are injured and the a 4th is just not good enough to play. That leaves only 2 or 3 Seniors, who have been receiving significant minutes. The rest Jrs and Sophs. From what I have heard, there will be a few Freshman, who will get an opportunity to play this week.
I don't mind everyones opinions. It keeps this board going, and hopefully can get Springfield people more involved, and educated about their Sports programs. Besides, I get bored at work, and love to talk about HS Football.

This is a shame for Springfield football. I really thought after last year, the program was on the upswing. It appears that it is in the worst shape it has been in for quite some time.
Hopefully, these remaining young men will stick it out, give 100%, and try to improve as much as possible.
26 total??? OMG! Do they even have enough kids to do their pre-game warmup?
Maybe they should ask their basketball coach to coach football and get kids to come out for football...

The problem is as I see it is that they hired a new coach in Moran BUT they kept the same assistants. These guys have been around forever and it's time time the AD cleans house like he did with the basketball programs.
Ray Fowler needs to shake things up and get away from the " just field a team attitude". As long as you have the same people in charge this what you'll have. Why aren't the boosters raising ----, aren't there any left?

I think I got the coaches name wrong. What's his name?

The coach's name is Mazur (Moran is the QB). As far as I'm concerned, he needs to be let go, along with most of the assistants, as was previously stated. All Mazur has done the past two years is beat Marlington, Field, and Norton. While we had chances with Marlington before, who's to say we couldn't have previously beaten Field and Norton? At the rate things are going now, I really doubt we'll go more than 2-8, if that (Field and Norton are the two I have in mind).
I looked at the box score in today's paper and saw Moran's statistics were 2-11-85 and one of our scores was a 45 yard TD pass. As I saw at the Ellet game, it appears that all Moran throws is very short passes or crazy long. What's wrong with throwing for 10-20 yards a pass? Springfield hasn't had a passing game for years. We finally get a decent QB and our coaching staff doesn't utilize him the most efficient way possible? This is crap.
I didn't make it to Minerva or Southeast, but will probably be there for Norton. I had very high hopes at the beginning of the season, but they died immediately after I saw the score of the Minerva game. Mazur and, for the most part, his assistants aren't working out. Things need to change very quickly, especially with the rumored $300 pay-to-play upon the failing of our levy. Who's going to come out for the team with the state things are in?

I'm glad someone else is seeing what I see. JeffKSU87, hit the nail on the head. Evey passing play called for Springfield, is what they call an "all go" route. They split 4 people out wide, and send them all on "go" routes. The QB can only do one thing, heave the ball. The spacing between these 4 receivers, is horrible. The 2 inside Receivers end up right next to each other with 3 defenders all over them. I have no idea why the coach dose not try more high percentage passes. Its the worst play calling I've ever seen. Moran is a decent QB, he is just not getting the opportunity to complete passes. Out of the 11 passes attempted, 9 of them were Mazur's pattened "all go" play. Trust me, I have it on tape. What ever happened to sending a receiver on a drag, or maybe one out in the flats, or maybe even stay routes, or 5- yard outs. I just don't get it. The Box Score Stats are not a reflection on how good the QB is, they are a reflection of how poor the coaching is. Unfortunately, you have to witness a game first hand to realize this.

Slants and drag routes are almost always open at this level, because most corners are not able to defend them. If your QB can get the ball to these kids on short slants and drags, you will move the ball. I have no problem throwing the ball downfield, but not every play, and not without a safety valve or 2 staying home for an outlet pass if downfield is covered.
Of course, I'm no coach, so what do I know?;)
So what is this coach's background?
Is he a young guy, old guy, did he coach somewhere else?
What's the story with his assistants?
It sounds like a pretty poor situation.

It just keeps getting worse: Springfields leading rusher quit on Monday.
The current coach is an Alumni of Springfield. He was an offensive Lineman for Springfield back in the mid to late 90's. He was an assistant coach on the Freshman team in 2003. The following year(2004) he was hired as the Head Varsity coach. Not sure of his age, but I think he is around 26 years old. He played college ball at Bowling Green but injured his knee early on, which I believe ended his playing days. Some of his assistants have been there for a few years. His Defensive Cooridinator was a Youth coach last year. He lost 3 Assistants this year, one to Green and one to ellet and one not coaching football at all.
With pay to play being put in place next year, I still believe they'll be lucky to have enough kids to field a team in 2007. Things must change and I think it needs to start with the AD.

This is bad news for an already reeling program. Someone needs to step up and demand some changes, or I agree, Springfield will not have a team next year.
Very sad situation.

This sounds like a bad dream. Granted I'm a Coventry guy now but I follow all Southern Summit County schools since I have extended family everywhere. Nothing against youth coaches but this has to be a mistake. It's a LITTLE more complicated making adjustments at this level. :help: Losing 3 assistant coaches says something too. I wonder why they were let go?
And how do you go from a freshman assistant to a Varsity Head Coach in 1 year? Were all the other coaches that bad or not interested in being a HC?
I only saw Springfield once last year at their place against the Comets. We won but it was a good game. I think that game was the first time I ever saw a QB sneak it on a short yardage play and break it 60 something yards for a TD. I thought we were in trouble when I saw that.
We are better this year, Springfield is a rival for us, and we have you at home. And based on what I'm hearing it sounds good for us.
Hope things work out for you guys, except against us ;)

I'm not going to bash the Coaching anymore, but your questions are the same as many people are asking in the community. Most people know how I feel, and trust me, there are many other issues that I will not discuss on here. Unfortunately, there is not a lot I can do, but let things play out. Its just frustrating, knowing that this was the most talented Team, Springfield has had in a while, but yet they still can't win games.
Expectations were high this year, after what the team did last year. Although they only won 2 games, they lost another 2 by less than a TD. And, they were extremely young. Nobody expected the let down that has happened this year. I have a good idea why many of the kids are quitting, but don't understand it nor agree with their decisions. For some of them, football would have been a good opportunity to try and get into College. I guess they didn't want to go to college. I think they'll regret their decision when they get older.
I saw the QB sneak for a TD last year also(by the way, it was 80 yards). It was pretty cool. The way Coventry is playing this year, I don't think you'll have any problems with Springfield. Caris is playing awsome this year and sounds like many other players are stepping their game up. Good luck the rest of the season.
