It is sad to see that there is not more activity in the Springfield forum. With the upcoming football season, and the potential to actually be competative this year, I am surprised there are not more fans on here discussing the team. Maybe they are waiting for basketball season:shrug:

There is not a lot of interest in these types of Websites in Springfield. There is also not a lot of support for any of the Springfield Athletics. The local buisnesses, City Officials and School Board members just dont give a rats (you know what). They rarely have Pep Rallies for any of their Sports nor is there much recognition for successful Teams, when they have them. The Community seems to focus more on the accomplishments of the Band. Its embarrassing to go to a home Football game, and see shirts being worn that state "Its all about Halftime". I think this is a slap in the face to the Football Team and its Coaches. If the School would put as much focus and money into their other Sports, they would be more competitive, and more students would maintain their grades and play.
I post on here to keep other people updated, on what goes on in the town. Springfield is a great place to live. They just need to put some winning seasons together, from their primary Sports(Football, Baseball and Basketball), and the enthusiasm will return. Pep Rallies, Community gatherings, Meet the Team nite(s) would be a good place to start.
Trust me, people of Springfield talk about their Sports, just not on Websites.

That is sad. The basketball team had their best season in decades, and should be pretty good again this year. The football team I hear may win 6 or 7games. In Tallmadge, we love our sports, and our entire city supports our athletes. The past 2 football seasons have been a great ride. Being a Springfield alum, I am disappointed to see that more people do not support the athletics there.
Give them some time, the foundation is set and they will be along in the near future. Everytime someone searches "Springfield Spartans" on Google, this site is the first one on the list. In a few months, we'll pick up some Spartan fans and it will roll downhill from there.

Thanx Yappi. I agree, it will take a little more time. Springfield people talk amoungst themselves(a little too much at times), but its tough to talk to people from other communities, when their Football Team goes 1-9, 1-9 and
2-8 over the last 3 years.
The Basketball Team has set a good foundation and now its time for the Football and Baseball Teams to step up to the palte.
Just so you know I do feel that Springfields band is the best in the area. I heard they have one of the best Band Director's in the Northern hemisphere. I would expect nothing but superior ratings from them all year long.

Yikes, that is embarassing for Springfield. "It's all about.. what??????" This is leaving the door wide open for Ellet fan. Especially this week!!!!

Does Ellet even have a band?
Jack32 I heard you were an all league player in high school and would change at halftime for the band show. How did your coach take this with you not in the locker room at half? Would he have let a non star do this also?

I am sure he would not have minded.
Sure, all players should play an instrument if it is all about half time.
I guess if I played for Springfield - I would have taken my trumpet with me and left it on the sideline. Please tell me this whole thing is a joke, this doesn't happen does it?
So what about the rest of the game, does anyone care? So if I come to the game Friday should I plan on leaving after the half time show? Maybe I should change my pick, if Springfield has guys going both ways and playing in the half time show, they may be wore out.
Chop, bring your Tuba and play along at the half:laugh:

Sorry Jack, just kidding. The only joke here is all these smellet people that still think the Spartans are terrible. Just polish the shoe and it will look good in our showcase.

Look, I have nothing against kids that play in the band. I just don't think its right, to sell shirts with this type of message on it, and I think the school Administrators should have put a stop to it.

I think it's great publicity for arguably the best high school band in the area. Oh, and by the way, Springfield wins by minimum 10 points. You heard it hear first:cool:

I hope for good and fair Officiating. I can handle a blown call now and again, but I hope a bad call, in the last minute or two, doesn't cost either team the game. I really believe these 2 teams will be evenly matched and hope the Spartans come out on top. To have the Shoe back in Springfield would really boost the School Spirit.
Does anybody know the overall Series record, between these 2 teams?

Thanks Jack for having my back. I noticed you were a columbus guy. Go Bucks!
Sure thing Chopblock! I just have reading a lot about it and notice you been calling this game since spring.
Yes Go Bucks! I am worried a little about their defense.
All I hear about is how great Springfield is going to be - this should be an exciting game.

The players gave everything they had, just ran out of gas. Play calling for Springfield was abismal. Mental mistakes also cost them as the Defense gave Ellet 40 yards in Penalties, that assisted to their first TD(6 plays in a row, Springfield had a Defensive penalty). Don't give up on them yet. Ellet was the better team, no doubt. Green will beat them in week two, but I still think they will win 5, maybe 6 games this year. To be tied at half, and only down 14-7 going into the 4th quarter was still impressive. After that, a fumble for a TD mid-3rd quarter and a desperation pass interception with 45 seconds left in the game that resulted in an Ellet TD, actually made it look worse than it was.

A loss is a loss. Springfield football continues it's tradition of hyping the upcoming year claiming that they will be better, then going out and laying an egg. It's going to be another long year for the Spartans football team.

What is wrong with the passing game? Is the qb that bad?6 yarsd passing. With a good running game you would think the play action would be wide open.
I am saying 5 wins also=Coventry, Norton, And Field are bad football teams, get Minerva, and then win won from the others. 5-5 and no it is not a good season but not an embarrassment.

T H2Dad,
Neither I, Chopblock or anybody else pro-Springfield has ever said the Spartans will dominate this year. I have stated that they are bigger, faster and better than last year. I have witnessed it and still stand behind them, and my prediction of at least 5 wins. To judge this team based on the very first game, and you not even being there, is unfair. We hype, because we are confident and optimists. You know nothing about this team, so how can you bash? We are excited about this years team because they are better than years past, and we are not going to give up the season based on opening nite.
Chopblock, to answer your question about the passing game, you need to see the film. For some reason, the coach felt necessary to go for long passing routes, instead of a short, high percentage passing game. The first 3 out of 4 pass plays, were go Routes with no underneath receivers to check to. The QB had no choice, but to throw the ball deep into heavy coverage. They only ran 1 play action pass, which has been effective for them all pre-season. I have no idea why they didn't run more play action. I agree, play action/Boot passes would have created more time for your QB and also given him the opportunity to run, if the WR's were covered. Instead, they chose to drop straight back and give up 9 sacks. The Pass blocking was attrocious.

I agree with the paly action stuff, Sprint outs and floods. Get rid of the drop back and spread stuff.
5-5 let's show up and play the pups tough.

I am a Springfield grad, and played basketball at Springfield. I follow Springfield sports very closely. I have a sister-in-law that teaches there, and a very good friend that is the band director. I do know alot about this team, and I am not judging them on 1 game. I am judging them on 15 years of history which is the same old story every year. I want to believe, really I do, but the reality is this is another stinker of a team.

Tallmadge H2 dad,
kinda like the cheap shots you've been making about the Football team, huh? Look, the Springfield people appreciate your support, but we don't appreciate your cheap shots just because they lost their first game, to a better team. It seems to me, that you will be the first person to jump on the "band wagon" once the team begins to win. Instead, stay with the team and support them, win or lose. Get to know the players names a little, instead of creating opinions based on the score you read in the paper.

I don't see these as cheap shots at all. This is what I foresee for this season. I hope they prove everyone wrong. I want Springfield to do well. I really do. But I was fooled by all the talk about bigger and better. I should know better. Thats all. I've been hearing it for years.
They did lay an egg against Ellet, a game that from what I heard was not as close as the score indicated. That Ellet had at least 2 TD's called back. Ellet is not that good. Not nearly the best team Springfield will play this year.
I will, however, continue to root for Springfield football. And I hope they win their next 9 games!!

Hey all, I graduated from Springfield in '05, and started using this site and JJHuddle last year for information. I was at the Ellet game, high on reports of Springfield being the real deal this year. I had talked to the QB/RB coach and he said this was the best team he's had in the past 5 or 6 years. And while last Friday's game was a huge letdown for me, I'm still pretty optimistic about the season. Yeah, two of Ellet's TD's may have been called back, but another two of them were a result of huge bad plays for the Spartans. The first one, after the 3 or 4 facemasks (I guess they forgot the rules of football or got way too excited/cocky after that first TD) that Irish87 referred to was just weird. Another one of their's resulted after the ball bounced off of our kick returner's facemask and propelled forward into Ellet's hands at our 11 or somewhere around there. As a result, I think the score reflected the game well.
I also agree about the passing game. I was curious as well why Tony's pass options were either 5 yards or 35+. There needs to be an inbetween, to get a good gauge for Tony's abilities.
Regardless, I'm still looking forward to the rest of the season, and I'll be at the Green game. Hopefully I'll be in high spirits after a Kent State win over Minnesota.

Hey, guys, go easy on dad. He's really a solid guy and he was probably as frustrated and disappointed as anyone else the way the game turned out. To be honest, I've heard a lot of good things about Springfield football this year and hoped that you would soften up Ellet for us this week.
