Six Freestyle Wrestlers Overthrow Reigning World Champs for Nur-Sultan Top Seed | United World Wrestling

After a year of jockeying for position, the top-four freestyle seeds for the 2019 World Championships (September 14-23) are finally locked up. Six non-returning world champions overthrew a Budapest world gold medalist and head into Nur-Sultan garnering a top spot.

It gives some pretty good commentary (returning medalist, etc) for each weight.
 
Interesting that Russia only gets 3 seeds (all three returning world champs seeded 2, 3 and 2). USA gets 5 seeds (2, 1, 1, 1, 4). Sure would be nice seeing World champ Taylor in that lineup.
 
On the women's side, USA gets 5 seeds (1, 4, 1, 2, 2) while traditional power Japan gets 2 (1, 3).
 
Would expect countries with limited budgets to only send guys at Olympic weights (Batirov, Kaipanov, Safaryan, Hasanov, Yankouski). Don't be surprised if there are surprise medalists at the four non-Olympic weights, and countries like Russia and USA to win several medals there.

My guess is that they had some upsets and perhaps they didn't participate in all the ranking series events. 2x World champ Yui SUSAKI (50kg) was beat in their team trials. She was considered one of the most dominant women in the world. Returning world champion Haruna OKUNO (53kg) didn't make Japan's team. I believe both would have been #1 seeds. So they apparently have some good young guns.

Well Rashidov (61kg last year) is going 65kg, and Gazhimagomedov (79kg) and Kurugliev (86kg) didnt make the team (Gadzhi to injury). Believe they have a different 92kg as well

Rashidov was a silver last year, Gazhi a bronze, and Kurugliev did not medal (nor did their 92kg).
 
2018 Russian 70kg gold was Gazimagomedov who moved up to 74kg and is sitting the bench behind returning gold, SIDAKOV .

Both Russia and USA had 7 medals in FS last year, Russia winning the title with 4 golds to USA's 3. Russia returns 4 medalists (3 golds) and USA 5 (2 golds).

Russia lost their 125kg due to injury. He wasn't a seed but was pretty good. I'm sure they'll fill in with someone nearly as good.

They'll send Khugaev, who won Russian nationals this year and is a 2x Yarygin champ. If they for some reason don't (because Russia), they'll send Makhov, who is a 3x world champ (2007, 2009, 2010) and competed for the first time in two years recently.

I'd say either would be a pretty good fill-in. Meanwhile, our fill-in is PDIII.
 
Word is Iran's 125kg Hadi is out as well. This is big for the USA as Hadi was bronze last year but did not have a seed this year, meaning he could have been drawn in against Gwiz. Their backup isn't as good and has been beaten by Gwiz I believe.
 
Here's what we know about the Russians. They are considered the strong favorites to win another FS team title. USA had their hopes dashed with the injury to returning World champ, and Ohio native, DTIII (not to be confused with PDIII). In 2018, a year when we thought we had a really good chance to come home with the FS title, Russia entered the tourney with 8 seeds (1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3) and USA came in with 5 (1, 2, 2, 4, 4). Russia transferred their 8 seeds into 7 medals (1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 3, 3) while USA also got 7 medals (1, 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 3) from their 5 seeds. Russia only gets 3 seeds (all three returning world champs seeded 2, 3 and 2) in this years Worlds while USA gets 5 seeds (2, 1, 1, 1, 4). If I were Russia, I might be a little nervous about Team USA, even w/o DTIII.

We all know pretty much everything there is to know about Team USA. Here's a little of what I know about the 2019 Russians.
57kg Zavur UGUEV - #2 seed, returning World champ, has taken a loss this year after coming back from a 7 month hiatus.
61kg Unknown (by me at least - maybe Idrisov) Gadzhimurad RASHIDOV - returning World #2 has moved up to 65kg
65kg Gadzhimurad RASHIDOV will go unseeded (no returning World pts since he bumped a weight),
70kg Unknown (by me at least - maybe Baev) Gazimagomedov is the reigning World champ but moved up a weight and is riding the bench behind another world champ.
74kg SIDAKOV - #3 seed and returning World champ
79kg Unknown (by me at least - maybe Nabiev) Gadzhimagomedov was a World bronze last year but is out with an injury
86kg Unknown (by me at least - maybe Kurugliev)
92kg Unknown (by me at least - maybe Zhabrailov)
125kg Maybe KHUGAEV (fill in for injured starter)

I'm sure some of these "unknowns" will make some noise at Worlds, but if we thought we had a chance last year (with 5 seeds to Russia's 8), why wouldn't we think we have a chance this year (with 5 seeds to Russia's 3). Sure, we're licking our wounds w/o DTIII, but Russia has some significant injuries as well. Russia will put some rising stars on the mat, but so will Team USA with Yianni/Zain and Fix.

And if you're not seeded, like 5 USA guys and 7 Russians, you have to beat at least a couple of pretty good guys to come home with a medal.

Another critical aspect in the team race is how those who don't medal rank (5th thru 10th). The Russians last year went 5, 7, 5 for a total of 28 team pts while USA went 5, NP, NP for 10 team pts. We lost by 28 pts last year, 18 pts being accounted for in the non placers.

61kg Idrisov has taken some losses this year but did win the Yarygin
70kg Baev has taken several losses this year, 5th at the Yarygin
79kg Nabiev is a backup to World bronze, hasn't lost in limited action this year
86kg Kurugliev has taken some losses this year but did win the Yarygin
92kg Zhabrailov has taken several losses this year, 5th at the Yarygin
125kg KHUGAEV has taken several losses this year, 12th at the Yarygin
 
Other tidbits
61kg returning world-champion Yowlys Bonne Rodriguez is the lone returning medalist from last year’s World Championships
70kg top seed Adam BATIROV (BRN), who was last year's world runner-up at 70kg and is the lone returning medalist from last year’s World Championships
79kg Champ Dake and runnerup HASANOV (AZE) are the only returning medalist from last year’s World
92kg Champ Cox and bronze KARIMIMACHIANI (IRI) and YANKOUSKI (BLR) are the returning medalist from last year’s World

I think all four medalists return at 57kg
3 medalist return at 65kg (plus one who won a medal at 61kg)
All four medalists return at 74kg
Two return at 86kg
Three at 97kg
And three at 125kg

Non Olympic weights average 1.8 defending medalists per weight and Olympic weights average 3.2 defending medalists per weight
Some of this likely is due to some of the top guys positioning themselves for a run in 2020.
