I'm adding the seeds. Some of the seeds seem to be missing above. Perhaps these guys don't have world medals.
 
This is great- props to the original poster. I'm in the process of doing something similar, and will also have notable results against other USA wrestlers. Less than a week until worlds!
 
Thanks for sharing. But I was surprised that the original author didn't mention that Bonne of Cuba is 35 (assuming Wikipedia is accurate) when he bothered to mention the age of a 34 year old.

He had a few mistakes (originally had Snyder as a bronze last year), but still a great primer.
 
I added in the seeds that were left out, and any World medals they earned.

So, does anyone still think Downey has a reasonable chance of qualifying a spot for the U.S. in the 2020 Olympics? (I'm taking the "under.")

Downey is capable of beating some of these guys, but not likely the 4 seeds. After that, you get a lot of the luck of the draw in the Worlds. It's random after the top 4 seeds, so if you lose early to a semi loser, then you have 1 match tourney. If you lose to a finalist, then you have a chance to get to the bronze match. Even a loss in a bronze medal match qualifies the spot. The other good guys not seeded, like Shabanov (BLR) & Naskideava (ESP), could be stacked away from you or they could be in your 1/4 bracket. He has beaten some decent guys, Like Heflin and Martin, but not any top contenders. If he draws into a finalist 1/4 w/o Shabanov (BLR) & Naskideava (ESP) I'd give him a decent chance to qualify. I don't think he will beat any of those top six (4 seeds and Shabanov & Naskideava).

Drawing into the top side is essential, as is being in the quarter with Erdin. You only need two wins to make the bronze match then, and if you get some weaker opponents its possible. It really doesn't matter to be honest, as we will qualify the weight with Taylor, Cox, or Dieringer at the Pan Am qualifier.
 
I like to do a spreadsheet on NCAAs, filling in the rankings and project them to tourney pts to see who the team contenders are. Sadly, this exercise has seemed unnecessary in recent years since PSU has been winning title after title. In close team races, such as 2015, there was a flip at the top as underdog tOSU overperformed (per seeds) and beat IOWA for the title. And, believe it or not, tOSU had the edge over PSU in 2018 but underperformed (per seeds) and was beaten when MyMar lost to Nickal in the 184 title match. OK, enough about NCAAs...

Everyone knows that Russia is the heavy favorite to win another team title, like they are almost every year. What surprised me was that when I plugged the numbers in for this year's event, Russia had 4 teams ahead of them, USA, GEO, TUR and IRI. We all know that seeds never play out, but it may indicate that the team race could bring some surprises. And the winner might be neither USA or Russia. Here are the seeds and projected pts from seeds:
USA 110 (1, 1, 1, 2, 4)
GEO 100 (1, 3, 4, 4, 4, 4)
TUR 95 (1, 1, 3, 3, 3)
IRI 65 (2, 3, 3, 4)
RUS 55 (2, 2, 3)

Now, what this doesn't take into account is pts for 7th-9th, an advantage for RUS with team depth. Also, RUS has 3 Golds returning with those 3 seeds and another Silver in the lineup at a new weight. So, they'll likely perform much better than the 3 seeds would show. How much better is the unknown. And, interestingly, all 4 teams ahead of RUS have at least one World title (RUS 14, USA 9, TUR 7, IRI 6, GEO 1).

The women's race will be extremely close between China, USA, and maybe Japan. China and USA both have 5 seeded wrestlers while Japan only has 2.

Looking at GR, no one will catch Russia.

Not going to lie. I first got interested in World level stuff when Snyder made it and won at 19 from Ohio St. That was the first World/Olympic tournament I ever watched.

They are like thr RUS men. They win almost every year so you have to look at them as the team to beat. And I know they have some young guns. I think one beat a returning world champ to make the team.

These guys may deserve "Honorable Mention" to those named by Yankee, if for no other reason, they are seeded which (depending on the random draw) may give them an easier path to a medal than unseeded guys. Yankee knows these guys better than I do. However, the best guys don't always medal due to bad draws, among other things.

Thanks, and you are right the best guys do not medal each year. I fully believe Frank Chamizo was the 3rd best 174kg wrestler in the world last year, but since he was on the same side as Sidakov and Burroughs, he fell short. The seeds help with fixing that, but obviously not all wrestlers care about seeds.

I know Cox plans on going down to challenge Taylor for 86 kg next year for the Olympics. Has Dake stated what he is doing? He dropping to 74kg to challenge Burroughs for next year?
