What is the fastest mile ever run on Ohio soil on an outdoor track for women?

Fastest mile on an outdoor track. not 1500 or 1600. For women. Any level…HS or college or pro…whichever is fastest ever on our soil. Although if someone knows 1600 fastest, that may be helpful.

For hs:
Addy Wiley has become the fastest high school girl ever to run a mile. Or almost a mile anyway. Wiley, of Huntington North, ran 1,600 meters in 4:26.16 Saturday night in a meet at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich. Jun 11, 2022.

Well, after just 10 minutes of pondering/searching, I know where the fastest mile on Ohio soil lies. Between 4:27.0-4:43.5.

The world all-time list lists no times from Ohio faster than 4:27. Ann Henderson (Brecksville), set the then Ohio HS girls' mile record of 4:43.5 at Kent Roosevelt in 1978. The mile is not a frequent competition for women. I'll do some brainstorming.

Can anyone find anything faster than this?

4:33.78 (i) - Olivia Howell (Solon - Univ. Illinois) - 1st - Big 10 Indoor Champs - Geneva, OH - 26 Feb 2022

FWIW, the OP is asking about results produced on an outdoor track.

Just so we understand the OP correctly, we're looking for:
- 1 mile
- female
- run on an outdoor track
- run within the borders of the great state of Ohio

It wasn't on a track but there were 6 women faster than 4:33 at the Guardian mile last year:

Leah O’Connor (Michigan State) has the All-Time Ohio “indoor” soil record at 4:32.71 set at Spire at the 2015 Big Ten Indoor Championships. And for an outdoor certified road mile, Josette Norris ran 4:19.66 at last year’s Guardian Mile in Cleveland over the Hope Memorial Bridge.

So I know the All-Time indoor soil record and the All-Time certified Road soil record but I’m still looking for the fastest “outdoor” mile on Ohio soil.

Thanks to everybody for giving it some thought.

Like I said, there aren't a lot of miles run by women within Ohio....on an outdoor track.

Ann Henderson may still hold the record?

Somebody needs to put together another distance challege like Xenia had in 2021.

I've started the "All-Ohio" file with the goal of:

1) Best performance by an Ohio-based athlete (resident of Ohio at time of performance) ANYWHERE - no age restrictions.
2) Best performance on Ohio soil, by any athlete. What T&F News calls an "all-comers" record on Ohio soil.
3) Indoor and outdoor marks considered separately (my disagreement with World Athletics indoor/outdoor equivalence).
4) Olympic & World Championships medalists.

Anyone think of any other criteria?

My 1st additions to the guy's side are: Butch Reynolds' 43.29 WR at Zurich in 1988, and Clayton Murphy's 1:42.93 in 2016. Also, David Payne's 13.02 110mH from 2007, and Erik Kynard's 7' 9 1/4" (2.37m) from 2013.

I may be able to help with that list. I have been working on a top 10 list for track and field events from Northwest Ohio athletes. I am sure a lot of their results will end up on here. I have found this rabbit hole to be rather tricky because you don't know who or where an athlete went to college and a lot of colleges do not keep good track and field record books.

Thank you. Any help would be appreciated. If you give me names, there's a decent chance I can track down where they went to school if it happened in the last 40 years, IF they were a big enough name. A top-10 list for that big an area is a challenge in itself.

Here is what I have so far. If there are any mistakes just let me know.

That's a nice compilation there! Thank you for sharing. I'll review for the HS info vs. my lists and let you know.

On another topic, the late Craig Whitmore had also compiled collegiate lists through about 2007. That was the last year he was able to do such research and compilation efforts. Well, it looks like those lists need to be updated and given the "love" they deserve. Another rabbit hole :)

Maybe I can do an initial top-10 list in 2024 for collegians of Ohio HS origin. This is going to take a back seat, though, to the HS lists until I've got those done.

As a follow-up, I've noticed that Whitmore didn't differentiate his collegiate lists between Ohio HS-based athletes and those from other states. Mine will.
