Listening in the car on audio…High Noon…about the making of the movie…and it’s screenplay author (Carl Foreman) being subpoenaed by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) during its filming, how the screenplay became an allegory for blacklisted Hollywood stars, directors, screenwriters, etc., being abandoned by their friends like the townspeople abandon Gary Cooper; the story of the entire blacklist era…the interesting roles played by John Wayne, gossip columnist Hedda Hopper, the movie’s star, Cooper, who, while very anti-Commie, stood by Foreman.

Reading One Giant Leap….the history of Apollo, from Sputnik forward…Kennedy’s speech, all the way to the Moon.

Planning on getting a copy of "The Man In The High Castle" I enjoyed the Amazon series, although the ending was kind of a let down. Takes place in a fictional time in the 1960s during which Germany and Japan won World War 2. The Eastern USA is controlled by Germany, while the Western is controlled by Japan. It was very interesting if you like historical fiction.

MK Gilroy is a friend of mine. Have been since sophomore years of high school.

He wrote 7 novels between 2012 and 2017, but apparently none since. The one I read was the only one the library has. It was pretty good.
Mark was an editor for decades. I will tell him about this post. He will be very happy.

Bully Pulpit, by Doris Kearns Godwin, on Teddy Roosevelt, William Howard Taft and the Muckrakers, it is a good read
and Master, Slave, Husband, Wife about Ellen and William Craft, a slave couple who in 1848 disguised themselves as slave owner and slave to escape to make a thousand-mile trip through the South to freedom.

That series frustrated me to no end. It was an interesting story line but I felt as though the producers did that “thing” that is so common in series television…slow down the advance of the plot so that you can make 10 episodes when you really only have 6 episodes of material. It dragged. I gave up on it…maybe early in the 2nd season. It just wasn’t going anywhere. I thought my time was being abused.

"Chrysalis" - by Lincoln Child (2022)

Interesting tech thriller which forays into the world of wearable tech, virtual reality, and increasingly complex and interactive bio-implants.

A mysterious huge tech conglomerate called Chrysalis (think Microsoft, AT&T, Google, Verizon, and Intel merged into one) builds a fortress city/facility in Connecticut. Now it's ready to release the latest personal computer device worn on the ear, which will stimulate the brain's visual cortex and create a VR experience on a level par with STNG's holo-deck. But someone has threatened to sabotage the product and use it to kill many customers unless a one billion dollar ransom is paid. Can our hero Gideon Crew identify and punish the bad guys while saving the company and its customers?

Lincoln Child has other fun hi-tech novels to his credit, but he's kicked it up a notch here. Pleasantly surprised I could keep up with the details. The earpiece in the book brings to mind "The Tingler" movie, it's a little unnerving to think of. The plot combines ideas from the movies "Tron" (1982) and "Disclosure" (1994) on a much, much higher scale.
