What are some of your favorite Cult Movies

Caligula may have competition ... from The Room: ;)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Room

FootballFan1795,

I'm sure glad you posted this information on "The Room". Oddly enough, even though I have never
seen "The Room" once you tied it to the film "The Disaster Artist" made about the making of "The Room"
the light bulb over my head flickered . A quick review of my Netflix viewing history shows I watched "The Disaster
Artist" in March of 2018. Now I remember the story of 'The Room" or a story within a story that is, as I do recall
"The Disaster Artist". Netflix shows I gave it 3 stars out of 5 indicating I liked it. Not likely I will ever see "The Room"
but won't be a big loss other than maybe seeing it purely out of curiosity some day.

Consensus for top 3 of worst films ever probably have "Plan 9 From Outer Space" , "The Room" and
"Caligula" all in contention for that dubious top spot, lol. The unmentioned " Showgirls" may be in
the running as well, lol.

Maybe we should start a worst films thread ?

To the above three I would also add a relatively new one that is also starting to gain cult status, Cats. It seems that some theaters started to show this as a midnight film and folks would come in very buzzed; the laughter would be uncontrollable.

Does anybody remember the 1968 movie "Candy"? A very soft-core porn/psychedelic movie with major stars including: Marlon Brando, Richard Burton, Walter Matthau, Ringo Starr and many others in cameos. I saw it at the midnight movies back in the seventies.

not sure if all of these would qualify, but ones that come to mind:

Club Dread
Charlie Bartlett
Accepted
Hoodwinked
After the Sunset
Clue
Ferris Buehler's Day Off (I'd argue this one is mainstream now)
Elf (another that is now mainstream but had to earn it's way there)
Olympus as Fallen (it was likely supposed to a one off that has now spawned a trilogy with a fourth being discussed)
John Wick (another movie that was likely a one off that is now going into movie 4)
The Sandlot
Rookie of the Year (a classic if you're the right age for when it came out)
Zombieland
Mean Girls
Wedding Crashers
Varsity Blues
Down Periscope
School of Rock
Pitch Perfect (its popularity spawned a trilogy)
The Wedding Singer
Galaxy Quest
Cloverfield (another one-off that spawned a franchise)
Road Trip
The Hangover
Fight Club
Spaceballs
Robing Hood: Men in Tights
American Pie
Mallrats
National Lampoon's: Van Wilder
Dodgeball
Karate Kid
Necessary Roughness
Serenity
The Outsiders
Reservoir Dogs (you could name many tarantino films, but this was his first if I'm not mistaken)
Coming to America (a cult classic, but in the 80's was probably a big release for Murphy)
Old School
Tommy Boy
Animal House

Near Dark (1987)

All of the Bowery Boys movies (1946-1958)

Abbott and Costello movies (1940-1959)

Ma and Pa Kettle movies (1947-1957)

Francis the Talking Mule movies (1950-1956)

Universal Monster movies (1923-1956)

It’s not a cult classic, but a favorite of my childhood that I happen to be watching as we speak:

Has anyone seen The Rescue from the late 80’s?

In my defense, I was not stateside in the late 80s so I missed that classic. Thinking on it, I don't recall a favorite movie as a kid. Certain movies I watched every year but that was more because you kind of were supposed to: Oz, and a few around Christmas.

A particular reason that movie resonated with you?

Cult movie classic -- "Reanimator"

And for those who mentioned Helen Miren who now makes a living playing Queen Elizabeth, you should have seen work when she was in her teens and 20's -- a body that just wouldn't quit.

A good question. I suppose certain things resonate differently whenever you view them for the first time. Things resonate with you as a kid that may not if you first experienced it as an adult, and those childhood memories stick with you, even if it’s just a random movie or a family vacation.

I probably wasn’t more than ten the first time I saw it. Something cool about a group of kids going on an adventure to save their dads. One of the kids was around my age when I saw it.

Thought of a few others (some good, some not so good, lol):

Clerks
Road House
Election
Stand By Me
Attack the Block
Memento
American Psycho
The Amityville Horror
Pet Sematary
Gates of Heaven
Grey Gardens
Rushmore
Bottle Rocket
Napoleon Dynamite
Early Godzilla
King Kong

Forgot all about Clerks and of course Mallrats.

Stand By Me is also a fav.

Roadhouse? Forget about it. Bill Murray loves it.

And of course thinking of Murray I have to bring up Caddyshack which is a classic and my all time favorite comedy movie could also be considered "cult."

The Gods Must Be Crazy

I really enjoyed this movie when I was a kid. It showed that there were different ways to look at something that we think is normal. I haven't seen anything about this movie in a couple decades until this post.

Bought Stand By Me the other day. Never seen it. Maybe I’ll watch that tonight.

Might be a one-man cult but lesser known movies I'll watch as a mood dictates:
The Way
Taking Chance
The Station Agent

Another “it’s probably just me” movie:

Airborne

Filmed in Cincinnati, in neighborhoods near me. Western Hills was used as the high school. I lived only a few blocks away at the time. My sister and I tried to visit the set. Forget if we succeeded.

The west side, Northern Kentucky, Eden Park, Longworth Hall. Krohn Conservatory, and the riverfront are all prominently featured.

I just can't let this topic die . As I mentioned in an earlier post on Cult Movies, I believe this a work in progress,
and as such, I am adding some more films to the ever increasing consolidated lists that have been listed.
Since my last post, there has been some great movies added by Oskar , PantherProud , Purplemojo, and
FootballFan1795.

I've listed some more films that I believe qualify for cult status consideration in my opinion. I have tried to not
include any film that has already been listed previously, but I apologize in advance if there are some movies that may
have already been listed.

Angel Heart
Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer
Beetlejuice
Videodrome
Edward Scissorhands
The Loved One
Cry Baby
Escape From New York
When You Comin' Back Red Rider

JB, I thought about including several of these films on my own list (Edward Scissorhands, Seven, Drugstore Cowboy, A Fish Called Wanda, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Basketball Diaries), but I wasn't sure if they had attained 'cult' status. But, since you and I were both thinking along the same lines (great minds think alike ya know, lol), they must qualify as 'cult.' ?

has Deathrace 2000 been mentioned? That seems cultish enough. We used to play that one. Ooh, ran over Grandma,100 pts!

Matt Helm movies with Dean Martin. In Like Flint series with James Coburn.

95% of the films named by those above were "regular" popular movies. Nothing cultish about them. The true cult movies are shown late at night on the cable networks.
