WCAL Football 2024

Wickliffe beat Chippewa 42-7. I think a big turning point in the game was down 14-7 in the second quarter, the Chipps hit the runner hard, the ball came out and there was a big scramble for it and somehow it came shooting out of the pile sideways towards the Chipps bench, right into the hands of a Blue Devil, who ran it in 45 yards untouched. Yikes! 21-7 at halftime. The third quarter saw two nice Chipps drives inside the Blue Devils 25, end up with a tipped interception and an incomplete pass on fourth and 6. Both turned into Wickliffe scoring drives and the air came out of the balloon. Wickliffe ran a lot of wing T type stuff, misdirection, that the Chipps had a hard time knowing who had the ball. The Chipps tried some blitzing trying to disrupt things, several times just missing hitting the QB handing off, and boom, the RB gains 10-12 yards. Four drives inside Wickliffe’s 35 with no points was a killer. On to the next as two close friends will be coaching against each other at Chippewa next week vs. Tuslaw.

From the Daily Record…

Rittman 35, Strasburg 22

Artie Sonego had a huge day to start off his senior season, rushing for 244 yards on 27 carries. He scored all five Rittman TDs.

Leeks offense is balanced. It’s equal parts “super fun” annnnnd “a little too cute” against a real thumper.

That said…bad news. Dalton has something for everyone left on their schedule. Need an opinion on St. Clairsville.
Oh yeah, they’ll be absolutely fine for the rest of the regular season. Aside from a muddy game on grass against a physical team (and Hillsdale now has turf) the Bulldogs are going to just fine this year.

That said, giving up fifty+ to a team with zero passing yards…ouch.

Couple things I saw:

Kirtland & Dalton D Lines are getting the business in film today. Kirtland was giving up 4 yards per carry >. Dalton was throwing the run game open 👀

I don’t recall seeing Hess on the field. And that was back breaking…

Daltons QB looked outstanding. Both INT’s were tipped ( I think) Finally got Tomlinson in the slot, but shotgun spread is weird to see from the orange & black. (Garaway - it’s Garaway’s offense)

Injuries- game was physical. Well duh. Hopefully not too banged up.

I’ve now watched LaVerde get bigger and faster every year since his freshman year. He’s going to give everybody fits. Tiger raises some high IQ athletes.

Leek got the keys to a Corvette. Might as well stand on the throttle. Some of the play calls were purely wrekless…but the kids were all about it.

Dalton will NOT put up 34 on Kirtland come playoff time. Gonna need to address the run D.

Did I see that LeVerde had like 350 yards rushing? Is that true?! Ouch

More than likely…It was slop city for most of this one. QB went for 340 yards on the ground on some broken plays / also had zero passing yards and 2 int’s… So SLOP CITY. Kirtland’s first play on the season? Penalty on the kickoff - re-kick. I’d have to rewatch. I’ve watched 5 games by Saturday morning and I’m not complaining!

Retraction: Hess did play? Tomlinson hurt?

Next week should be a gas. Wickliffe is all over the place in recent years. Down a division, but from a metro area that can bring some nice talent depending on the year.

He played both ways the whole game.
Yeah. I had 3 games in front of me…and Dalton shouldn’t be allowed to have that many “20-something” numbers in the backfield. 😂

Any injuries last night? The young QB looked great. The tempo was very quick. Can certainly help with rhythm and of course…no time to think.

Sammy did get injured last night... no idea on timetable.

Tomlinsin left in the second quarter - hoping he can return this season, such a talent. The Kirtland o-line really was outstanding. It was made a little worse due to the bulldogs missing a couple lineman, one of which was their starting left tackle and starting DE last year, so the line was a little hodgepodge on both sides. Thought the soph Hignight did a great job at qb considering the circumstance. Did he make mistakes - yes, but the talent is clearly there. Bulldogs are going to have a very good year imo, especially when the get those guys back (and Sammy 🤞)

In fairness, their run defense needs more work than I originally thought… But I also thought both Kirtland & Dalton’s O-Lines got donuts on Saturday morning.

Anyone know if Northwestern got their numbers up?

Hillsdale @ Lucas
Norwayne @ Canton Central Catholic

I think the Smithville game vs Claymont is a toss up, Claymont is a improved football team this season

Rittman, Norwayne and Dalton notch wins

Smithville and Hillsdale are toss up games

Waynedale, Chippewa and Northwestern gets ugly for the locals

Hard to not be….🤷‍♂️
Sport Look Up GIF by MLB

14-12 Smithies at the half. Starting QB is out for Smithies. Freshman starting. 4 1st half turnovers for Smithville
