Ok, this is not as in depth as normal...but here are the updated rosters excluding incoming freshmen for the boys 2014 season. There is not much chatter for the girls side, but if there is interest, I'll put one together for the girls too.

Thanks mukisa. Great information.

Does anyone know if they have changed the state tournament this year? Looking at the referees' schedule it appears that the regional tournaments have been eliminated. It looks like the Girls will play at Mason on the weekend October 17 & the Boys play at Worthington & Ohio Wesleyan the following weekend. Is that correct? Have the regional tournaments been scrapped? If so, is the state tournament a 1 and done? Or is there some sort of group play or double elimination? Remember last year, St. Charles won the state but finished 3rd in the North regional. Without the expanded regional representation at the state tournament St. Charles may not have even been there.

No regionals, just 1 weekend for states.

It will alternate years as to which gender is first, and one will be south and the other north. But will be held at 2 pools - example this year Mason and syc. Host states. Top placed games stay at mason. But the lower place games shift to Sycamore.

You must win to win. But each team will have a place.

So is the change of format because as new teams are added the realignment of the regionals will not be balanced competitively? Or are there other reasons? When you say the lower place games will shift to a deep / shallow pool, does that mean that the initial games will be in deep pools. It will be interesting to see how Ohio Wesleyan works out, its a deep pool but as I recall doesn't have a lot of seating. Any idea how many attend the state tournament? Last year's final seemed pretty well attended with all the X fans and an all Cincinnati final for the girls.

New states because it was just overall too much with too few. You could win states to a team you beat already in the post season, or that beat you. Now you have to win out. It's cheaper this way too - fewer travel weekends / hotel / gas / pool - it's just better.

I believe to accommodate all teams to a place it wasn't possible in 1 pool. So a second pool works. But the 1st round games will be all deep for sure. 1-4 place games definite all deep. Then not sure what places move away.

Last year states was very well attended. Having 3/4 teams from Cincinnati making states finals was very helpful in those numbers. Specific - I don't know. It will help having the genders separate. As you won't have the families of the girls teams at boys states, visa versa.

You'll see a few more teams over the next couple of years too as the Columbus area is offering a non-polo playing schools team and moose in Cincinnati is doing the same. Polo's future looks bright. You will also see a change in the USAWP ODP structure too. Ohio is now with W. PA & MI in the "Great Lakes zone". Should help with numbers and opportunities. Moose took 44th in 18's and 48th in 16's nationally and both teams were within 1 of beating Cali teams. Had kids from every Cincinnati school and a Columbus school on the team. Loving it! Plus more and more ohio kids are starting to get looked at by college coaches...and 1st tournament of HS season this weekend! Get pumped!

Thanks for the notification OhioWaterPolo. Here is the preseason poll for the Boys. According to www.ohiowaterpolo.com the rankings will have added importance this year because they will be the official seeding for the state tournament. Since the tournament is a 1 weekend affair with all teams participating this will mean that a high ranking is important. To win the tournament a team has to win all its games. Presumably, the coaches will cast an honest ballot and not try to improve their own team's seeding by overstating its place. Wondering if including the referees in the later season balloting might ensure more accuracy in the ranking. I suppose the logistics could be a problem as not all the coaches voted. In this day and age of email it doesn't seem that difficult of a process.

Boys' preseason rankings (8-15-14)
1 St. Charles 167 (8)
2 St. Xavier 148
3 Mason 144 (3)
4 Thomas Worthington 140
5 St. Francis 136
6 Upper Arlington 133
7 Sycamore 125
8 Princeton 86
9 Milford 85 (1)
10 Worthington Kilbourne 74
11 Napoleon 67
12 Sylvania 54
13 Oakwood 33
14 Perry 31
15 New Albany 16

Also, it looks like Canton Glen Oak & Dayton Carroll are not competing this year. Hopefully they still have teams but will compete like the Columbus Hawks as JV squads. However, Massillon Perry seems to have a team. If Glen Oak still has a team that would be 2 in the Canton area. Would be nice to see Cleveland schools fielding teams. Club teams like the Hawks may be the way to grow the sport. Remember St. X started as a club team (although not sure there were players from other schools on the team). Anyway, good luck to all! It will be interesting to see how things progress - who is overrated & who is underrated.

Bears number 6...no way! Guess it's just preseason so the Bears will climb. Fortunately they won't have to rely on the bias of a poll to assume their number 1 status at the end of the year.

For those who haven't seen the girl's ranking...the coaches got it right.

Girls' preseason rankings (8-15-14)
1 Upper Arlington 123.5 (5.5)
2 Sycamore 116.5 (0.5)
3 Mason 95 (3)
3 Milford 95 (1)
3 Thomas 95
6 Napoleon 94
7 Kilbourne 63
8 Princeton 53
9 St. Ursula 51
10 AMDG 46
11 Sylvania 29
12 Perry 28
13 New Albany 21

Should be a sweep like in '12.

Looks like the rankings are pretty much based on last year with some adjustments for lost seniors. Until play begins it is not clear where teams should be ranked in the poll. rjones as usual has his beloved Bears taking it all. He may be right, but not because he knows, just because that's always his prediction. When your prediction is always the same...odds are once in a while you will be correct. Not sure who all is playing in Napoleon this weekend but that kicks off the season and should give some idea how accurate the preseason ranking is. Are any teams going to Michigan next weekend? That's always a good test with Rockford, Pioneer and Huron. Good luck to all. Hope its another competitive season.

RJones, just wondering what happened with your beloved Bears in '13. Why no sweep last year as both the boys and girls lost. Agree with Aquacard that we won't know much until this weekend is complete. Saw that StX's varsity squad is in Michigan this weekend. Have to wait until later to see how they stack up against the Ohio competition. Also curious to see how Mason plays with one of their top players back in action.

First weekend and the Bears are 4-0. They easily beat 2 teams ranked above them. They're obviously ranked too low!

Rjones, us looked good this weekend. That being said the st x team they beat was the jv team. No one really knows what that team is like until their varsity squad plays against the other ohio varsity squads.
Thoughts about the rest of the teams?

In the Napoleon tournament no team looked dominating, but SC, UA, Thomas and Mason all looked good even though Mason was 1-3. Mason has one outstanding player and one very good player that they rely on significantly. Thomas has a solid squad, with at least 3 strong players. UA is quite fast and has several good players one of whom generates much of their scoring (Reminiscent of Adam Rabe several years ago). SC looks to have the most depth. They have around 30 player on the team and were substituting 6 players at a time! In the Mason game they scored 13 goals and had 7 or 8 different scorers. This year's state tournament will favor a deep team like SC because there is not a dramatic fall off at the bottom of their team. They will be able to rest their top players and let the second and third lines play against a weaker opponent. UA, Thomas and Mason probably won't have that luxury because they don't appear to have that kind of depth.

The rest of the field was a bit weaker. St. Francis went 0-4 but gave SC a strong game. St. Francis seems to always start slowly. They could sneak up on people as the season progresses. Kilbourne has a clear top 7, the rest are inexperienced. Milford and Sycamore looked average. Napoleon, Sylvania and Perry don't appear to be able to challenge the top teams. Princeton is an unknown as they weren't there. Chad Packer stepped down as their coach and Gary Tameris has taken over. Suspect that it will take a few years for Gary to build his program.

The real wild card is St. X. Didn't get to see them play and not sure how many they lost last year, but their JV squad wasn't bad. As you would expect, they are good swimmers and have good coaching. Heard their varsity went 1-2 in Michigan, but there's no shame there, as they were competitive in the games they lost. We all should acknowledge that Michigan high school water polo is stronger than Ohio's by quite a bit. Ohio's top teams generally would be second tier teams in Michigan. In recent years Ohio's best has not been able to hang with Michigan's best.

Anyway a great beginning. This week UA and St. Francis go to Ann Arbor. That may tell us more about UA as they play Rockford - defending Michigan state champ. Meanwhile X is hosting a tournament at their pool - not certain what teams are playing there.

Maybe other top Ohio teams are 2nd tier but not the Bears. This weekend we will play Rockford & Pioneer last year's top 2 Michigan teams. UA will prevail!

St. Charles varsity B team is scheduled for the X tournament. On Saturday Sycamore is hosting a JV tournament - St. Charles' JV is scheduled to play there. St. Charles has 32 players on their roster. Don't know how many X has, but I expect that X & SC have the largest teams. Good luck to all this weekend, especially UA & StF at the early bird. Would like to see a strong showing by the Ohio teams in Michigan.

X, SC, Sycamore, Milford, Thomas, Oakwood, Kilbourne, Napoleon, Mason & Princeton are scheduled for X's tournament this weekend.

Not sure of the scores but I think Thomas beat McDowell in Erie and lost to north Allegheny and erie prep, prep by a bit more

Thomas beat McDowell 13-12; They lost to North Allegheny 13-11 and Cathedral Prep 16-8. Kilbourne lost to Cathedral Prep 21-9 and McDowell 16-13. Believe they played North Allegheny but have not seen a result.

Sycamore defeated Princeton last night both varsity & JV.

St. Charles beat Kilbourne 23-3 in varsity match & 18-6 in JV game.

In the past the only thing to close the outdoor pool has been lightening. They will just play through rain and cool temperatures. And they have the indoor pool that will keep going regardless of weather. Remember some years ago when a power outage on Sunday didn't stop play.
