VASJ head football coach Elvis Grbac has resigned from his duties as the head football coach to continue pursuing his Masters in Theology per John Telich from Fox 8. He recently took a lesser role within the Athletic Dept. this summer. VASJ will be looking for their 3rd coach in 4 years. No word if he will continue working in the school as the MUSP (Marianist Urban Student Program) director.

I’m curious what he plans on doing with a Theology master’s. He was only there for one or two years, right? With VASJ experiencing an enrollment rebound in the 2010’s and an increase in football numbers, it would seem he’s walking away from something big (leading his alma mater on the football field) in the pursuit of something bigger. Good for him, nice to see a layperson on the pursuit. Just curious what exactly that “bigger” is?

My understanding is he became a born again Catholic after his playing days, I knew he was in pursuit of his masters for a bit at the Center for Pastoral Leadership over there in Wickliffe off of Euclid. I know he received big backlash from letting Babe Kwasniak go, but he really did attempt to help rebound a program (number wise) that’s been low since I was in school in the early 2010’s. I wish him the best of luck in his pursuit as well as his future endeavors

There is one consistent and underlying issue with VASJ actually growing and moving forward. Until that issue is resolved nothing will change, PERIOD!

I had the chance to interview coach Grbac last year after a tremendous game against Port Clinton. I thought they had a pretty good team that could win some games.

To clarify, in his own words, Grbac said "I am pursuing a business opportunity that precludes me from giving full attention to my coaching duties," said Grbac in a news release sent by the school. "I'm also continuing to work toward my master's degree in theology from St. Mary's Seminary. I just can't do justice to all these efforts simultaneously." Let's not make it sound like he's leaving coaching to devote himself to the seminary.

.

Bottom line, the program was on the rebound, but not fast enough so they fired Sowers and hired Elvis. In 2 years he won as many football games as his predecessor in the previous 2 years (7). That's not much in the way of improvement.

In his only year as AD/HC their volleyball coach resigned (2 state titles) and Elvis fired their boys basketball coach, Babe Kwasniak (3 state titles) and had police on site to escort him out of the building. Babe is a VASJ alum, West Point Grad, and Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army. And his family watched him leave this school with cops on either arm.

Elvis moved back to the area after his NFL career, but his son went to Ignatius & daughter to Gilmore. So the leadership of VASJ hired a guy to fix their football program & lead their athletic department who didn't see fit to send his own children there.

Dan Larlham at CVCA would be a PERFECT candidate for this job, but I respect him too much as a coach to think of him working at a place that treats people like this.

Wow....didn't know this. Sounds like he had an ego problem. That's not TOO bad when you're winning but he didnt win.

I can't imagine they'd step into the Rotsky pool. I'm not a Rotsky hater but there are quite a few of them out there that would be all over such a hire.
