Value of Top College Football Players

A professor at Ohio State did a study to determine the value of football recruits to universities that was published in the Journal of Sports Economics. The researchers examined the effects of recruiting on team performance, then considered the effect of team performance on revenue. It determined that five-star recruits increased their schools’ revenue by an average of $650,000, four-star recruits ($350,000) and three-stars ($150,000) and two-star recruits decreased revenues by $13,000.

So how much do one-star recruits and walk-ons decrease revenues?

Basically, this is what we thought all along. The stars make the money for the Universities. The other players are a drag on the schools finances. Also shows that schools without stars are being propped up by student fees.

This shows that if you want to play athletes, there are going to be alot of athletes that will have to pay their way through school because their contribution is negative. Imagine the 5 year offensive lineman that doesn't get to play a significant down until their final year. That is alot of money being spent on someone that doesn't really contribute to the schools finances.
