A professor at Ohio State did a study to determine the value of football recruits to universities that was published in the Journal of Sports Economics. The researchers examined the effects of recruiting on team performance, then considered the effect of team performance on revenue. It determined that five-star recruits increased their schools’ revenue by an average of $650,000, four-star recruits ($350,000) and three-stars ($150,000) and two-star recruits decreased revenues by $13,000.

The study, which covered the period period to the College Football Playoff, also said five-star recruits increased a team's chances of reaching the Bowl Championship Series by four percent.
