URSULINE & MOONEY PROJECTIONS/DISCUSSIONS 2024

I’m surprised this is the Game of the Week.

Lots of respect for the way that Farrell's kids compete, but they are even bigger underdogs now than they were before. Juelz Johnson is nice. Very unfortunate.

Coach Reardon is gonna try to jump on them early.

WKBN will do anything to feature western PA teams for that advertising dollar. Just look at the commercials. More than just a couple of Western PA businesses. Plus they remember the last 2 Ursuline and WGH games. But as Worm pointed out, their stud RB is out. I had picked Farrell to cover in the Youngstown pickem. Now I wish I can rescind that pick

Farrell wouldn't have covered the 17 points even with him playing. He is really good and I am bummed that we won't get to see him tonight but Farrell is worse than Hartley. This one is going to be ugly.

I agree w/ Farrell being down by their usual standards, but I'm always impressed by their playing up. Not exactly the same thing, but about 7-8 years ago their junior high team played Austintown Middle School. The were crushed, but goes to show the overall mindset of the program

Agreed. There are few programs I respect more than Farrell. However, Jaws is also probably right. This'll get ugly.

Ursuline rolls regardless if everyone was healthy tonight, and I’m guessing that Farrell knew that and didn’t wanna risk injuring the kids shoulder more for a game that doesn’t count

I am impressed with them as a program too. They aren't afraid to play anyone. I grew up playing Farrell and know many of the greats that came out of the school. They have my utmost respect, I wish they weren't as down as they are this year.

. I grew up playing Farrell
I didn’t know you were a Western PA guy. I just figured Trumbull County.

The radar for next couple hours doesn’t look bad at all. Rain appears to be dissipating. Must be popping up later.

Yep. Played at Hickory and won a state title there. The late 80s, early 90s was the peak of talent in western PA, shenango valley area. Like everywhere, it has dropped off.

I sure hope it holds off. I really don't feel like sitting in the rain. Haha.

YSN report

FARRELL PA- Ursuline rolled past Farrell 27-0 on Friday night.
In what was a shortened game that lasted just a quarter and a half, the Irish seemed unstoppable. After a slow first drive, Ursuline turned it on, racing down the field before Joe Balog found pay dirt from six yards out to give the Irish an early 8-0 lead.

The Irish had all three phases working in the abbreviated game. On top of moving the ball with ease, they got contributions from the defense and special teams as both were able to secure touchdowns. The first came when the Steelers were pinned back deep and forced to punt from their own end zone when a bad snap was hunted for in the end zone and finally recovered by Freshman Ethan Sandusky.

After a Vinnie Fecko touchdown run, the Irish capitalized on its dominant pass rush when Senior John Frangos scooped up a strip sack and ran it in to score which was surprisingly the last score of the game.

With six minutes remaining in the second quarter, both teams were sent off the field due to a lighting delay and were later told the game was called and the Irish improved to 2-1 on the season.

Ursuline (2-1) will host Youngstown East (2-1) next Friday, September 13 at 7 p.m. from Stambaugh Stadium in a Steel Valley showdown.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – In a battle of state powers, Cardinal Mooney fell to Steubenville Big Red at Stambaugh Stadium Friday night, 31-21.
A Carlos Gomez touchdown reception early in the first quarter gave the Cardinals an early 7-0 lead. After a Big Red field goal, the first quarter closed 7-3.

Vinny Gentile’s short touchdown run extended Mooney’s lead to 14-3 early in the second quarter. A long touchdown pass for the Big Red closed the gap to 3 points. Cardinal Mooney took a 14-11 lead into halftime.

Steubenville took control in the second half with three consecutive touchdown runs to move ahead 31-14 late in the game.

Steubenville Big Red (3-0) will host University Prep (PA) in Week 4. Cardinal Mooney Cardinals (0-3) will visit Sugar Creek Garaway.

(Not sure about the schools status as "state powers" this year.)

In 14 meetings between the two traditional powerhouses Mooney has won 7 and the Big Red has won 7.

Farrell "conceded" the game during the lighting delay. There was still 6+ minutes left in the FIRST HALF. I never would have guessed that a once proud program like Farrell would quit, but those are the days we are living in I guess. I feel bad for the young guys that missed out on getting some varsity action in the 2nd half, especially since there is no freshman or JV games this week.

So I hear Tyon Flowers transferred back to Mooney, after going to start for Warren Harding opening game. Kind of a odd situation

I hate to refer to Farrell's loss as them quitting. Anyone who watched that game could see that it was a "Mama told me there would be days like this" game. They were unable to do anything, and I mean anything. I honestly felt bad for them. They were fundamentally lacking in every facet of the game and the Irish taking advantage of these mistakes made the Irish look much better than they performed. Ursuline is a very good team and I hope Farrell isn't as bad a they performed.

Conceding is the same in my book. I might feel different if there was a JV today and the younger kids from both teams were able to get some time, or even if the delay was later in the game. To not even play an entire half is ridiculous. Farrell is bad, knew that going in, but what kind of message are they sending to their kids? Throwing in the towel isn't going to help them.

Very odd. Came out of nowhere and shocked everyone. Harding taking Canton McKinley down to wire was even more impressive than they got credit for. The program has moved on and the program is finally trending in the right direction.

Week 8 in Warren will be interesting, especially given the current state of both programs.

I can't imagine he will be able to play at all this season. Can't start a game at one school then a couple weeks later to his old school and expect to play.

He didn't start a game yet. He was scheduled to start for WGH in their opener,at RB, but then transferred to Mooney, from what I heard. But it doesn't make sense. Sure can't be over playing time, if he was expected to be the starter. Must be some other issue

I think If he had participated in scrimmages, he would be ineligible also. Not 100% sure though.

Ursuline should have a cake-walk against East tonight but I like appreciating the history of a long series like this one. This may be the final match up of these two "backyard rivals" (East High is visible from the third floor at Ursuline) for a long time given its current lopsided nature. East-Ursuline would attract as many as 10,000 fans from the late '40s thru the early '60s almost always at Rayen. Both the Immaculate & Sacred Heart fed into Ursuline so this was a match up with long time "bragging rights" and some big upsets along the way.

Good luck to the Irish tonight! Will be interesting to see if Mooney throws it 30+ times again this week at Garaway.

Does Ursuline and Mooney start the new conference in 25 or 26?. If it's 26 then Ursuline and East will meet 1 more time
Reardon got this program back on track with his return....... and made this matchup 192-21 in scoring

2026. I know East is looking for a new home, so there might be a slight chance they dont play next year, but most likely they will.
