Ursuline & Cardinal Mooney prospects for 2025

I wouldn't call it spite. Id say it was more about picking up someone who is more worthy and will be a partner in the league. The Vikings are probably happy to get out of the game. What's the losing streak now? 5 games over 3 seasons?
Yep, 5 over 3. It's a shame, I always enjoy heading down to YSU for a game. Great atmosphere!

I was really impressed with the field up on the lake. Incredible views. Terrible bugs. All three of my boys played VASJ throughout their hs careers. The first to at JFK and now the youngest at Ursuline. Its nice to see them have their own field.

That was a GREAT high school game last season! What high school sports is all about. Close game in front of a great crowd with KIDS making one big play after another.

I always respect the Irish! I’m sure this isn’t the last time these 2 will square off.

Maybe "the last time" for a while. Never say never.

Mooney schedule is a monster!! 3-7 is likely. They will certainly be ready for post season.
They ran from DeSales this year but looks like they may have replaced with a home game against Chardon? Other than backing out and putting a fellow Catholic school in a bad spot I can understand why they would make that trade

Canfield had a lot of boys abandon ship so to speak, they could see the program was a sinking ship as long as the current coach remains. Most players of significance have left the program and gone elsewhere I am told.
Incredible how quickly that happened. Just a couple of seasons ago they were state champs….

I am surprised that Canfield scheduled Mooney. Didn't they join the ranks of other Mahoning Valley schools not long ago who refused to schedule the parochials on the grid iron? Good for CMHS in having more local teams to play. Local rivalries make the match ups more interesting/exciting. Or is Mooney okay now because they've been struggling? Boardman has nicked Ursuline from all sports.

@Cinciirish I am guessing they know they are not going to be good, so no point in traveling very far or going to great lengths to schedule accordingly for Harbin points and playoff considerations.

Still. They have lost 3 really good players to Ursuline already. Mooney isn't much of an upgrade at the moment but if beat up Canfield it could open some parents eyes to more possibilities. I would still think the obvious choice is Ursuline of course but you never know.

Canfield was the ringleader of that movement. Typical Canfield to go back on what they started similar to what they did in the All-American conference.

Will Irish fans grow weary travelling to Columbus once the Ohio Catholic League is in place? Is there any possibility of other Catholic highs joining this endeavor? It is interesting that Columbus DeSales was on Mooney's original slate for '25 but was dropped. Also Ursuline was set to have another go at VASJ but they are now replaced with Walsh Jesuit.
To make travel more worth it, I suggested to someone working in the league having games on a Saturday and doing double headers if two games lined up. Ex. if two schools are playing in Columbus, just have them play before/after a game, fans get to see opponents they will face later in the year, and could create some intense environment if team A needs team C to beat team B for a spot, idk it was just my opinion with all that travel already.

Reardon has the valley on lockdown right now. Only way that changes is if he ever left for college. YSU???? Maybe someday but not soon

Has a son coming up, maybe after he graduates doesn’t make sense for him to leave.
Agreed. I think he is there at least through his son's career. I hope he's there forever. I have never seen a hs program run like his before. From top to bottom, every detail accounted for. It is really impressive.

Define elsewhere?

@simkon I know people give him a lot of crap on here. However, he had the Canfield hiring nailed and said the coach would sink the program, and he has faster than the Titanic. Ursuline has benefited for sure from Canfied kids and has picked up 2-3 really good ones. It's the best program in the valley. I'll be shocked if they're not playing in the state semi's again or even the state championship.

Gentlemen,

I'm not sure what to expect from Mooney this season. A new HC and OC and probably a new offensive system. They do have some talent returning but their schedule is tough. We shall see.

YTOWN, Please keep us stronzos up north posted on your assessment of the upcoming season for the Cards. Your insight is invaluable, and we don't have too many Mooney posters left with insider info. Is Colaprete bringing in an entirely new staff?

I have heard there are a few holdovers but I only know of one for sure because I asked him if he was coming back and he told me he was asked to stay on and accepted. I didn't ask about anybody else.

2008 Youngstown East alum Gary Thornton recently posted on social media that he was joining Mooney's coaching staff. Not sure what his role will be, but I've been telling him for years that he should get into coaching.

Yes sir, the coach I talked to told me that Mr. Thornton would be joining the new staff. I believe he only spent his senior season at East as Rayen closed prior to that year. I remember him as a 2-time All-City RB at Rayen and All-City for East in his senior season before heading to YSU.

Fella's everything goes in cycles. Don't forget when Mooney was crushing DI schools on a weekly basis. Ursuline was down in those days and now look. Mooney will be back. Iggy was unstoppable at one point. Now some will say they are a shell of themselves. They will also be back.

I’m rooting for Bedford Chanel and Lorain Catholic to return to their glory days……hopefully Mooney’s time comes back around before they join those 2 schools in the grave yard
