A lot of people's lists are very heavy on skill players. There are some great OL/DL not on people's lists that were better at their position than some of the skill people listed. Not saying take them off, asking where is the love for the big guys? LOL.

Great comprehensive list Worm! Though I think Isaac Smolko should be added! TE from Springfield (I think class of ‘01)- 4 year letter winner at Penn State and floated around nfl practice squads for a number of years.

Worm’s list looks great, but a few additional guys I’d add:
- Josh Swogger (Ursuline)
- De’Veon Smith (Howland)
- Evan Beard (Boardman) at FB
- Malik Hooker (New Castle PA) (if we are including Lawrence/Mercer county)
- Kevin Tuminello (C from Boardman)

I’d agree on Smolko. After Irizarry, probably #2 TE in last 20 years locally.

Thanks! A few notes...

1. I almost added Swogger, but DJK tore Harding up in 2005.
2. De’Veon is my guy. Known his family for years (one of his brothers is also my cousin), but I’ve always been a huge fan of Braylon Heard’s. I interviewed him after the Harding-Mooney game in 2008 when I was a correspondent for the Tribune. I’m pretty sure that’s the day I met YTOWN before the game at Buena Vista.
3. Evan Beard was a beast! Seemed like he was at Boardman forever.
4. I actually checked Wikipedia to see how much of Western PA was part of the Valley. Lawrence County wasn’t included, but it mentioned that their area is covered by the media in Mercer.
5. I was so loaded with offensive linemen, I took out Levi George. I wanted to be biased so bad, but I wanted to showcase our area’s ability to produce NFL linemen.

On #4 - Lawrence is generally part of the Mahoning Valley geographic region just not in our tv media market , like you mentioned, for some reason. It’s odd as they do on ocassion cover Lawrence county teams on local tv.
On #5 - George was another one I thought of as possibility. Tuminello was honestly much better than Greco in HS at Boardman and a case could be made at least equal in college too. Greco just had a little more size.

Worm02,

I believe you are correct that it was prior to that 2008 game.

The thread topic says Mahoning Valley players of "our" time. I'm pretty sure "my" time goes back a bit farther than most of the other posters here. Having said that I would pick a few of the same guys already named but I will list the best I have seen that have not been named above.

Ol Ed Muransky Mooney-Michigan-I think he played about 10 years in the NFL

Worm02 posted that his team was the best 53 players since 2000. I named Mr. Muransky on mine.

Probably the most deserving player I left off was Dan Benish from Hubbard and maybe Sylvester Stanley from Youngstown East, both played in the NFL. I went back and forth between them and Mike Trgovac and Chris Vecchione for that matter. Mr. Vecchione is one of my all-time favorite Mooney players. He was a 1st team All-State DE on Mooney's 1987 D3 state champion and a leader on that D, one of the best defenses I have seen at the HS level. He also started on YSU's first National Championship team. He was a very intense player.

Mr. Trgovac was undersized from an NFL DL perspective but he was also super intense, motor never stopped. He was also a heavyweight state champion wrestler. As I rememeber it he threw guys around like rag dolls. Also, I saw him play more that I saw Mr. Benish so I gave him the nod.

A year or two ago I read an interesting article about Dan Benish. Hubbard was still a member of the SVC when he played for the Eagles. Clemson, Notre Dame, Michigan and others expressed interest but he really wanted to play for Woody Hayes. He had a visit scheduled as Hayes had shown interest. However his senior season at Hubbard was 1978 and all OSU fans know what happened that year at the Buckeyes' Bowl game with Clemson.

Anyway the article said Mr. Benish went to the airport for his trip to Columbus where he found there was no ticket for him. He called the OSU football office and they told him that Hayes had been fired and he took all his recruiting material with him when he left so they didn't have anything on him. Benish was convinced to go to Clemson for a visit, of all places since that was the opponent that ended Hayes' career, and he fell in love with the campus. He ended up a starter on Clemson's 1981 National Championship team.

The article went on to say that he was projected as a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick but a rumor started that he had a drug problem and he ended up signing with Atlanta as an undrafted free agent. He made the team and played for the Falcons for 3 seasons. He said he didn't know where the rumor came from but it cost him a lot of money.

The article also talked about his being a replacement player for the Redskins in 1987. It said that caused some problems between him and his father. I guess his father was a strong union guy and he didn't like the fact that his son crossed the picket line. He stayed with the Skins after the regular players returned and received a ring when the Skins won the Super Bowl. He didn't dress for the game but was on the sidelines.

Clemson's Mitch Hyatt is his nephew. He signed with Dallas as an undrafted free agent.

Looking at the list which seems spot on, the 2002-2005 best group of local players .

Ytown. Write a book. Seriously. I’d buy it.

I've done a few. As an example the following is from the 1st year of football in Steel Valley Conference History. The book has complete game write-ups, line-ups, pictures, etc. for the league champion every season, which in this case is Campbell, but I also include the league standings, results of every game played by the league members, team coaches, and the All-League team, where they attended college if any, played in the NFL, etc. At the beginning of every season I include an intro that talks about the best teams and players in the area, etc.

PS: Below is not how it appears in the book at all but it's the only way I can get it to post legibly without typing it all again.

You've written books? I need copies of these today!

Yeah man the early 2000's was crazy in the area! Too bad the originally cancelled the Harding-Howland series after the '98 game. Doug Datish, Maurice Smith-Davis, Tony Davis, Brandon Alexander, etc. Those cats were good! I know Howland opened up the '03 season with Clevelad Benedictine. Should've opened up with Harding! Would've been an insane gate!

Meanwhile, before the world shut down, I had been collecting articles at the library off of microfilm (very nice staff!). I got everything that I didn't already have from the 2000's and before I finished the 90's, I "cheated" and did Harding's '74 & '75 seasons (mind you, I was born in 1983). I found out that back then, the Tribune had a section in the sports page that shouted out Trumbull County's freshman college football players. They printed the following in '75. Look at how big these lists are! Lakeview sent an offensive tackle to Florida, Windham sent guys to Penn State & Purdue, Mathews sent three guys to YSU, etc. Sheesh!

Even Windham was sending kids to D-I schools back then. The “Golden Triangle” recruiting area was rocking and roll in’.

Yes it was. The Vindicator did something similar to what Worm posted but it was for D1 players from the Youngstown-Warren area, there would have been far too many to list otherwise. Chuck Perazich was the sports editor at that time and he would periodically publish the stats from the NCAA regarding number of D1 players produced per capita in areas that had a population of at least 500,000.

The Youngstown-Warren area often led the country at the time. In one of the articles the NCAA said that the local area led the country with one D1 player produced per approx. every 6100 people. Cincinnati was #2 with 1 per approx. 8200 people. It then listed the 84 D1 players from the Youngstown-Warren area at the time.

In addition they used to publish pictures of those graduating players going D1 singing their LOIs. Usually their fathers were standing behind them as they signed. I can remember one in particular. At the table were the following seniors signing their LOIs:

Bernie Kosar - Boardman - Miami (Fla)
Mike Zordich - Chaney - Penn St.
Bob Maggs - Mooney - OSU
Steve Johnson - Mooney - Michigan
John Thomas - Mooney - Ga. Tech.
George Saadey - Mooney - Cincinnati
Ray Carter - Ursuline - Notre Dame
Al Ezman - Ursuline - Air Force.
Don Ginetti - Struthers - Penn St.
Pete Popovich - Austintown Fitch - Tulane but he transferred to Kansas
Jed Kesler - Boardman - Cincinnati
Ellis Sullivan - South - Cincinnati
Victor Bush - South - Cincinnati

There were several others that went on to YSU, Akron, MAC schools, S. Illinois etc. and that was just Mahoning County.

The area still produces some big time talent but not in the quantity that it once did which of course makes sense considering the huge population loss. The area doesn't even qualify for the NCAA prerequisite 500,000 population anymore.

The talent back then was crazy. The SVC had so many great players. Where it is really obvious was the speed of those games. The players were just so quick.

I never see Sammy Shon, the former Youngstown Rayen and Ohio U quarterback on any of these lists.

I have mentioned Mr. Shon a few times in the past but you are correct in that he probably does not get his due from area fans.

One of my brothers in-law was a teammate of Sam Shon at Rayen. Shon was the All-City QB at Rayen before heading to OU where he broke all the career passing and total offense records for the Bobcats. I think he is still 3rd all-time in passing yards and total offense at OU. I can remember him breaking Chuck Ealey's MAC single game total offense record as a junior. He was the MAC Offensive Player of the Year as a senior.

Remember Tony Bell? 1970 Grad from South. All-MAC safety and kick returner for BGSU. High draft pick of the Baltimore Colts in 1974. Sadly, Tony contracted MS during his first year in the NFL and passed away within 5 years. Great potential cut short by a debilitating illness. RIP, T-Bone.

I certainly do, same age.

Mr. Bell was an All-City End in football and also a 2nd team All-City cager, this is when they only picked 5 players per squad on the All-City hoop teams. He and Terry Davis were the dynamic duo for South hoops. Mr. Bell followed that Youngstown South to BGSU pipeline that was started by Don Lisbon in the late 50s. I may be wrong about this but as I remember it Mr. Bell was a RB at BG originally and switched to defense. I also want to say that he played at least one year of basketball at BG. He was an outstanding athlete gone far too soon.
