Time for Nostalgia - Share Your Jackson Memories

4. I believe the gas station at Fulton and Everhard was a Sohio before becoming BP and now the tire store.

Hmm...not sure about that one. I definitely remember the BP there, and since virtually all (older) BP's were once Sohio's - that could be the case. However, with the location of the one of the KNOWN (to me, at least) Sohio's - that would be an odd spot.

6. What was there before Springbrook Plaza (Circuit City, Outback, etc.)? While a Builder's Square had been there, that's not the answer I'm looking for - I'm looking for what was there before the entire plaza was built. "A white barn" is getting closer. I am not aware of an events place of golf course having been in that specific spot.

I seem to remember an "epic" bachelor party there back in the 80's.

While we're on the subject of old grocery stores - two other questions:

2. Not that it is part of Jackson anymore (thanks Massilllon!!!), but anyone remember what grocery store used to be in Wales Square? I completely forget what it was called.

Are you thinking of "Sparkle Market"??

Some other "blasts" from the past inside Belden Village Mall:
J Riggins - awesome place to shop for clothes

York Steakhouse - to my knowledge, it's still the only restaurant to ever be in the mall, apart from the Food Court and kiosks

The Parisian - the girls sure loved this place. Wasn't this the place that had the unique two story setup?

The Hobby Store (I think that's the right name) - LOVED this place for everything from Hot Wheels to model rockets

The Pet Shop (don't recall it's real name - perhaps BV Pets?) - awesome place right by the Hobby Store.

Alladin's Castle - YAY!!!

I loved that particular wing of the mall - Alladin's Castle, Indians Team Shop, Hobby Store, pet shop, York Steakhouse - great places all, and all right in the same area!

Bars:
Turn's Inn (SW corner where Circle K is now), Portage Inn (SE corner)
Last Resort was the last name of Portage Inn Before being levelled IIRC
Funny story that was related to me second hand...
My dad's friend was a paper boy tand he delivered to his principal and his wife they both worked for the school (not sure if she was a teacher or secretary) anyway if they weren't at school they were at the bar. So everytime he needed to "collect" he just went to the bar.

#6 used to be Green Thumb Nursery owned and run by the Dennis family. We bought a lot of nice quality garden supplies there- in fact our entire landscaping came from Green Thumb. They moved to Woodlawn and and Hills and Dales after they sold the Whipple site (Springbrook). That site is now the location of Aultman Woodlawn. I believe they also had a place north on 241 in Green. Most recently they had a smaller facility adjacent to Easterdays on Hills and Dales and I think they are currently in with the nursery, Canterbury? on Hills and Dales just west of Dressler.

Correct - the answer was Green Thumb Nursery.

1. Where was The Flower Factory before it's present location? Yes, it was in the building in the front of the parking lot (the one at a 90-degree angle to the present location).
2. Where was Duff's, and what was it? Bonus point if you remember it's unique feature. Correct, it was a buffet and in the location described. A little enhancement to the "circular serving island" thing - it was circular, but more unique - it rotated to bring the various items to you. To date, I've never seen anything like it.
3. Where was Alladin's Castle and what was it? Yup, it was a game room inside the mall.
4. There were a number of Sohio gas stations in Jackson - name one location. There was a Sohio where Family Video now is at Wales/Portage. Yup, there was one on the south side of Portage just west of 77. It's now a brick retaining wall for the plaza Cold Stone is in, but you can still see some of the concrete pad. There is still at least two more. Not sure what Braucher's was, although it definitely was a gas station at one point.
5. Belden Village Mall's principal interior feature in the 1970's & 1980's was what? Correct - it had fountains and foliage. Of particular interest was the deep sunken fountain near the main Everhard entrance - was always kind of spooky looking to me.
6. What was there before Springbrook Plaza (Circuit City, Outback, etc.)? The correct answer was Green Thumb Nursery.
7. Where did Giant Eagle used to be located and what store was it prior to Giant Eagle?Yup - it was approximately where Fashion Bug & Factory Card Outlet sit now and was previously a Krogers.
8. The original headquarters of the Jackson police was where? At the administration building at Wales/Mudbrook.
9. Where was the first Jackson fire station? Lake O'Springs at the 'Y'.
10. Speaking of fire stations, the station now on Dressler was where? Correct, it was indeed on BV Drive - it's now Valvoline.
11. It's now Macy's, but what was it originally? And what were the two names in between? You had all the names. It opened in 1971 as O'Neils, then was also the May Co & Kauffman's.
12. It's now Dilliard's, but what was it before that? And give yourself a brownie point if you know the original tenant in that location! Yes, it was Higbee's before Dilliard's. But what was it originally? And no, it was never a grocery store. The grocery store, Fazio's, was where the Food Court now is.
13. When did I-77 finish in Stark County, including in Jackson? Give yourself another brownie point if you know why it ever went through Jackson - because it wasn't supposed to! No answer yet on the date or why it originally wasn't supposed to go through Jackson. Unless you are really stretching, it had nothing to do with North Canton.
14. To my knowledge, Jackson has only ever had one go-kart track, where was it? This might be debateable - now that I think about it, there might have been one at Jaxon Forest, but that wasn't the one I was looking for. The one I was looking for was indeed located next to Grand Slam.
15. Of the current elementary schools, which one was constructed first? By process of elimination - Sauder is correct. It opened as a Junior High for the 1959-60 school year, five years before Lake Cable and six years before Amherst. It became Sauder Elementary in 1976/77 when the new HS was opened and the MS students transferred to their current location.
16. What's Discovery Zone and where was it? Yup - an indoor play place for kids next to (the recently defunct) Circuit City.
17. Why did Topp's Chalet close? Correct, it closed because it burnt to the ground. For the newer folks, Topp's was in that vacant property on the northwest corner of Everhard & Whipple, adjacent Taco Bell. It was a pretty fancy restaurant.
18. Mountain Jack's was a ____ and was located at _____. Correct, it was a great restaurant (finer dining) and was located where Max & Erma's is now.
19. How many screens were at Belden Village Cinema and when did it close? Correct. It originally had two screens, then bought the property in the other part of the plaza to add two more. It closed in 1997.
20. Lake Cable is manmade. True or false? True. It's a manmade lake, built sometime around 1920.

Almost done....still need a few more! ;)

Last call.......I'll pass along the answers tomorrow, if not already done.

This is a joke right? I thought a man of a certain nature shopped at J. Riggans, much like the Gap. Not judging here, just passing on what was talked about.

Huh? Certain nature? I have a hunch what you're talking about, but care to explain further - I'd rather not put words in your mouth if they aren't what you're trying to get across.

As for me, I was very much the yuppie about 20 years ago (now my style is "whatever feels good on me today regardless of what it looks like" (age does that..lol)), and J Riggins definitely had that preppie/yuppie look to their clothes, IMO. Nowadays, there's really not a single clothing store inside the mall I'd be interested in shopping at.

I believe we are on the same page here Polar. Do not want to offend anyone. I would shop at Footlocker, and the Finishline, Indians Team Store, oh and that peach of a store Hot topic.

4. To my knowledge, there were Sohio's at (1) Portage/Wales, (2) Portage/I-77, (3) Belden Village Drive by Wendy's (had a car wash) - the lot had sat vacant for roughly twnety years, until it was recently built on by the expansion of the Dollar Tree plaza, (4) Hills & Dales/Whipple. And as was said earlier, the old BP at Fulton/Everhard might have been a Sohio, as well.

12. Dilliards, aka Higbee's, was originally a Halle Bros. Department Store. Halle Berry, the famous actress, is named after the Chain. Halle Brothers closed at BV (all of them did) around 1982, and Higbee's went in almost immediately.

13. The date was 1963 when all of I-77 was complete through Stark County. As far as why it goes through Jackson: When plans for I-77 were being drawn up in the 1950's, the plan was to use the old US 21, which includes OH-21 from Montrose to Strasburg, and have I-77 flow through the western half of Stark & Summit Counties, not the central part. In essence, the cities of Akron & Canton were going to be isolated! Because of this design, the two cities, along w/the rapidly growing CAK airport, protested and the Interstate Planning Commission rerouted I-77 through central Summit & Stark Counties, including the portion you see today through Jackson Township!

Didn't know that about I-77. I did know it has been complete all of my life and I'm happy to announce I am younger than I-77!

Are you thinking of "Sparkle Market"??

The grocery store that used to be at Wales Square was Valu King way back in the 70's. My mom used to shop there a lot.

Also, props to whomever mentioned The Last Resort! Man, my first husband and I used to go up there and play pool with all of the employees from his uncle's Thoroughbred horse farm (the big one one Arlington with the silver fencing, and the huge pink elephant head on the side of the barn...lol).

We practically lived there during the summer of 1990, and wasted a colossal amount of time at that dump. I'd go to Kent State during the day while he worked at the horse farm, and then we'd all meet at The Last Resort and drink pitchers of beer and order in pizza and my husband (boyfriend at the time) played pool while I did my school homework...lol. That place was always like a JHS reunion- there were always groups of people in there whom I went to Jackson with every time I was there.

4. There was also a Sohio on Portage across the street from Cook's Art Supplies and the 77 Truck Stop.

7. Giant Eagle used to be where Value City Furniture is now on Dressler Rd. Although, the plaza with the old Giant Eagle was torn down for some reason, and replaced with the current plaza when they moved G. Eagle to The Strip. I can't recall what was in that location before Giant Eagle, but I want to say there was an Apple's grocery store there maybe?

12. Was it Halle's Department Store? I'm thinking it was either Halle's or Stern & Mann's.

13. I'm going to say around 1974, and that it went through Jackson because of the new (back then, that is) Belden Village Mall being built?

15. Amherst Elementary?

20. I knew that Lake Cable was man made...but do you know if Willowdale is also man made or not? This one is kind of tricky, but if you've been back here, you should be able to figure it out. Also, when was it founded?

Did you not see that Polar Purple had already given the answers to all of these questions. Looks as if 2:30 a.m. is the time someone drinks their nightly cocktail of Gin and No-Doze.

I don't drink anything alcoholic anymore. But you're right, polar purple did answer most of those already- I just hadn't read through the entire thread before answering.

Although, I added a new question. So at least I contributed something. Kind of.

Parade

what about when the annual township festival for the 4th of july...that isn't really on the 4th of july any more, was over off brunerdale/lake o springs and was called the firemans festival

I think I remember the Fireman Festival Parade..didn't it go down Fulton by where the Winking Lizard is located now? I think a queen and court were also chosen.

I can't say that I recall the Fireman's Festival Parade route, but I do remember that the Fireman's Festival itself was always held in the field area over on Lake O'Springs right by where the "V" in the road is, which separates East Blvd. and Lake O'Springs. It's the same area they now use for Jackson Youth Football practice's and games.

Jackson youth football practices are held at Sauder and the Middle School and games are at the fields by the admin building. Now next year it will all be at Strausser.

Who could forget Channel 67! I remember going to the Pizza Hut on Wales after football games and then heading to friends' houses soon after to see if we were on tv. I can recall the Channel 67 "theme song" and of course, the incomparable Scott Davis!

Scott Davis HAD to be wearing some type of toupee'. At least, I hope that wasn't his real hair. Good God.

Remember the Smurfs painted on the walls at Sauder's gym and the Peanuts characters on the wall at Lake Cable's gym. My friends and I had major crushes on Mr. Cahoon. He looked like Magnum PI in the early 80s!

Here's a couple more for you...

There was an arcade in the corner where Mulligan's is located. I thought that was Alladin's but maybe not. So what was it called? There was also an arcade in Gold Circle. I don't remember the name of it either (I wasn't really into the arcade thing...just on occassion)

Nobody has mentioned Stern & Mann's store yet in the mall. Or Chess King, another popular store.

Does anybody remember the 2 story Buger Chef in the mall (or was it a Burger King)?

I'm surprised nobody mentioned The Barn?

Couple of comments:

Alladin's was the arcade in the mall. However, I do definitely remember an arcade by Mulligan's, there, but not sure on the name, either.

The arcade by Gold Circle (later, Hills) was called Funway Freeway. And as a technicality, that plaza isn't in Jackson.

Was Stern & Mann's the double-decker store, or was that Parisian?

Yah, I remember Burger Chef/King...whichever it was (seems to me it was the former). Had two stories and would be at the entrance to the food court, now. Remember Fazio's?
