Teams of the decades

With the basketball season getting under way, I'd like to look back a little bit! I am interested in who you would list as the teams of the decades. Help me fill in the schedule below! I've listed my ideas of schools and I have not included the 2010's since they aren't over yet! Now, before anyone jumps down my throat, let me stress 2 points: (1) I am NOT a high school basketball historian by ANY stretch of the imagination; and (2) my knowledge of basketball outside of NEO is pitiful! Given that, who would you include/exclude?

1950's (1)Middletown (2)Cleveland East Tech (3)Lockland Wayne
1960's (1)Middletown (2)Columbus East (3)Akron Central
1970's (1)Cincinnati Elder (2)Canton McKinley (3)Barberton
1980's (1)Canton McKinley (2)Central Hower (3)Wehrle
1990's (1)VASJ (2)Benedictine (3)
2000's (1)ASTVM (2)Canton McKinley (3)Dayton Dunbar/
N. College Hill

How can you be a "team of a decade" with one title in the same decade?

Guess I read it as best team of that given decade. For the 1980's many here in Dayton area would say Dayton Roth was the best team for many years in either direction. They were fast and averaged just over 100 points per game.

1970/19-2
1974/25-1(State runner-ups)

They also won back to back state championships "AAA" in 81' and "AA" in 82'. Roth closed in 82'.

I only know this because they are in our county...Fulton County here in NW Ohio. But Archbold should be included somewhere...don't think they have won a State Title but they are 2nd in the state with most wins;
1. Canton McKinley
2. Archbold
3. Middletown

I’d give an honorable mention nod to Hamilton for the 1950’s (won state in ‘54, lost state in ‘51.) The “Big Blue” used to be a cage powerhouse.

Regarding the 1960’s: Columbus East was more dominant than Middletown.

This current run by VASJ is pretty impressive with 5 state finals in a row and counting.

I agree. IMO both VASJ and ASTVM are in the running for the 2010's. And with them in the same Division now, I am looking forward to seeing which team will rank above the other by the end of the decade!

1959/18-4

Canton McKinley 1940's

1945/21-2(State Semi's)
1947/17-3
1948/19-3

That is amazing.VASJ has a great basketball program.

But remember that is Div3.Would VASJ do the same in Div1?

IMO I think they would've definitely been in the mix. Like STVM, the Vikings regular season schedule is heavily laden with upper D1 schools which would make them dangerous in the playoffs. No guarantee of 5 in a row! But they would have been a tough out for any D1 school over that time period.

In the Southeast District, Portsmouth recorded 8 seasons of at least 20 wins in the 1980's and overall for that decade had a mark of 197-50.

1980: 21-6.......Class AA state runnerup
1981: 20-4.......District runnerup
1982: 20-4.......District champion
1983: 20-4.......District champion
1984: 20-4.......District runnerup
1985: 10-12.....Sectional finals
1986: 16-8.......District semifinals
1987: 22-3.......District champion
1988: 27-1.......D2 State Champion
1989: 21-4.......District champion

In D3 VASJ had cakewalks at least into regionals, if not all the way until state final 4. In Cle D1 a district semifinal would probably have been tougher than some of their regional finals in D3. However; given their talent, they could have made it to Columbus in several of those years at D1, but would have been a much tougher road. Last 2 years not likely.

Best basketball team ever! 1976 Barberton Magics. If you didn't see them then you really missed out. Ask people who know basketball objectively, down at the Canal who owns a fishing business.

In my mind's eye, I can still picture Carter Scott running the baseline in that offense!

I remember watching a great game between my Pups and the Magics.

Barberton shot the lights out in the 2nd half to beat Bulldogs.

Yes Barberton was fun to watch. It was like they did have some Magic.
