After a widespread search, Bill Johnson was selected to be the next athletic director of the Tallmadge City School District. He has 17 years of experience as a coach for basketball and cross country for boys and girls at the high school and middle school levels. He has been the Tallmadge High School boys basketball coach since 2018.

18 candidates applied for the position. The candidates participated in a multi-tiered interview process, meeting with members of the administration team, coaches, boosters and parents to determine their capability to lead Tallmadge student athletes and the athletic department.

“Johnson rose to the top of a very strong field across all of the stakeholder groups involved in the interview process. He is a respected leader whose enthusiasm and passion for the students and athletes of Tallmadge is infectious. We are really excited to have him step into a leadership role,” said Steve Wood, superintendent of Tallmadge City Schools.

“This was an extremely tough decision, and we are thankful for the strong candidates we had to consider, as well as to the administrative team, parents, teachers, and faculty who offered their time and input,” Wood added.

Johnson began his career as a classroom aide, earning his teaching certificate to become an intervention specialist. Johnson is currently serving as intervention specialist at THS, a position from which he will resign. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in special education K-12 from Western Governors University and is currently completing his Master of Education from Mount Union.

"I'm excited by the opportunity to help lead the Tallmadge athletic department," Johnson said. "I have truly fallen in love with this community and this position will allow me to give back to the community that has given so much to me.”
