Suburban League National 2024

The Solon Comets fresh off a rather surprising blowout 45-7 loss to Nordonia find themselves at a major crossroads v.s a weak Stow team. The Comets lost nearly all momentum they had built over the first three weeks of the season as they looked undisciplined and outclassed against what I thought could be a close game against Nordonia. Solon has been battered by injury through three weeks and will not get much help returning for at least the next couple weeks. The mets will travel to stow to play a weak bulldogs team who has been blown out the last 2 weeks. I honestly find it so surprising that Stow has been this bad as of late. When I look at their team I see both size and athleticism. When I look at their school I see high enrollment numbers. Unfortunately, these factors haven't contributed to winning. Overall, this is a must win for Solon. They sit at 2-2 with a chance to go on a win streak.I hope last weeks loss hasn't crushed them and they can come out with some of the hunger we saw in the first games. I predict Solon 28 Stow 14 but either way this week will be crucial.

Congrats to Stow on the win tonight, now let's see if they can't get two more against Brecksville and North Royalton the next two weeks. With those two coming up, and Twinsburg coming to town Week 10, playoffs are very much on the table for Stow.

Didn’t realize until now that Stow is D2 now. Wow! Have they ever been D2 before ?

Before everyone writes off Twinsburg this week at Nordonia, I should remind you the Tigers won the last time-on the same field.
Also, we had a similar situation in 2005 only this time Twinsburg was unbeaten and at home. But just before 9 AM on the day of the game, one of the player's mothers lost a cancer battle. If that wasn't enough inspiration for Nordonia to pull off a shocker and flip the script..
How do I know this? I'm actually married into this family-in fact it was that same young man who caught the garter during our wedding reception.

I'd love to believe you, but I caught a little bit of the Hudson game online over the weekend. I can't possibly see how Twinsburg will even compete with Nordonia and most certainly won't win. Their lines are not good and their skill positions aren't much better. They have 2 good players - the QB and a DB/WR (Acuna maybe?). And the QB looked both hurt and shell shocked. I tuned out early in the 3rd qtr. I didn't see anything special about the way Hudson played either. The Hudson RB was really good again. But it was hard to tell if the rest of the team played well or not because T-burg was that bad. The good news is that they have 4 winnable games after this Friday's impending Nordonia beatdown.

Very sorry for your loss BTW. Anyone passing away from cancer is a tragedy. But it is especially tragic when a child loses his mother.

That is weird.
Probably due to scheduling agreements that NoRo couldn't or wouldn't break. Looks like NoRo would've had to to lose its mid-season OOC game with Padua in order to add Solon.

Word around town is that NoRo would rather retain Padua as an OOC opponent in 2025 and beyond and break with Maple Hts. or North Ridgeville. A lot of NoRo residents' kids go to Padua (including one of mine), and both schools like the new rivalry. So, guessing that NoRo agreed to keep Padua in Solon's transition year but will move Padua to week 1 or week 3 next year and drop Maple Hts. or North Ridgeville.

Thanks for the info.

Just dropped to D2 this season. Enrollment numbers must be down.
As someone who enjoys studying the area communities I wonder if Stows population is aging and if so, that might explain the decrease in enrollment. I thought the drop to D2 was odd for Stow, also.

Drive through the city of stow and you’ll see empty businesses, run down and out dated shopping plaza’s. Stow has stood still in time for some time and the city has not taken appropriate actions to make stow a desirable place. There are changes, but still a lot of work to be done within the city. Stow’s AD is on city council and has a goal of being Mayor in a few years. We’ll see if things change.

But Congrats to Stows HC for DOUBLING his win total at stow this year!!! Maybe they’ll be able to win 3 games this year?

Still send in your application if you want an early head start on the interview process to be Stow’s new football HC next season.

Don't be too hard on Stow. I think every suburb and exurb is dealing with abandoned retail. Amazon effect. I travel the SR82 corridor just about every day between Strongsville and Brecksville, and I bet storefronts are 50% occupied. We have so much flooding in NoRo due to overbuilding yet our city leaders keep giving us more bank branches and pizza shops that we don't need.

I'm politically very conservative but I wonder at times if we should invoke eminent domain, bulldoze the buildings, and plant trees.

Stow isn't so bad. I find it to be a fairly nice place. They do a solid job attracting business, although I've heard they've become a little overzealous in recent years in regards to environmental policies that make it tougher for businesses to open or expand. Maybe a new mayor would fix that?

I'm just not sure that they'll be able to get out of this death spiral that the football program has been on for a while though. The youth program is abysmal from what I've been told, private schools poach the area and enrollment has dropped them from D1 to D2. Somewhere along the way over the past 5 to 10 years it stopped being the place where people moved to raise their families and became a place where empty nesters moved to in order to downsize and avoid higher tax bills. I suspect that is what the main driver is in the drop in enrollment. Its not less people living in Stow - 2020 census data is almost equal to 2010 and 2010 was up about 8% over 2000.

Guys. Stow and I talked last night, she forgives me for what I said. She said she’s had a troubled past and is working on herself. I did say I might have been a bit too hard. We both agreed that we were going to give it another chance, and we both just want a good football coach at the end of the day.

Nope. Never thought I would see it happen. A bit strange since the population has stayed pretty much the same. Aging population I suppose. I feel that pain! LOL

You and Stow will be able to enjoy the next two weeks I think in perfect harmony. Enjoy.

What’s everyone’s thoughts heading into Friday? Looks like we’re going to have some weather to deal with tomorrow night.

Nothing too exciting this week. My predictions:

Nordonia over Twinsburg, big
Stow over Brecksville by at least 1 TD
Wadsworth over Hudson by around 17
North Royalton over Padua in a close one
Warren Harding over Solon by 17+
