St. Peter Chanel Demolished

In some sad news for local NE Ohio HS sports fans, as the building that once’s housed St.Peter Chanel which shut it’s doors for good back in 2013 has met it’s fate with the wrecking ball and is currently being demolished. For those that are familiar with Chanel Firebirds athletics, the school produced some very good basketball, wrestling, and football teams back when they were open and established rivalries with VASJ, Trinity, Cleveland Central Catholic that saw intense games, especially when they met in the state tournaments. It’s a great shame that the only thing that will represent Chanel are the memories held by their alumni base as well as memories of the competition that took place at Chanel or against them. I suspect we will see more of this from the diocesan schools in the next few years. Catholic schools will really struggle with enrollment and a downturn economy due to Covid. Who will be next? I have my thoughts but I don’t think it wise to get an entire fan base on the defensive.
