St. Edward 2011-12

Another nice win by the Eagles! 3rd win in a row against a team they did not beat in the regular season.

A win tomorrow pulls them into a tie with St. Xavier for most boys OHSAA team titles ever (44).

The Eagles will likely have to make that 4 in a row since they lost to Sylvania Northview in the Padua Holiday tourney earlier this season.

Any idea what the controversy was? Was it just a review of whether the puck crossed the line?

Guh. Great way to close be the Eagles. That program is so amazingly (and frustratingly) resilient. They are never out of a game, and are always state title contendors- every year. Congrats to them.

Thanks for the kind words. By the way; that new addition currently being built at university school is incredible!

From what I understand, the puck crossed the goal line, but a US player reached inside the line and knocked the puck out of the goal with his hand.

Northview scores again at the end of the 1st period for a 2-0 lead. Familiar territory for the Eagles. Time to buckle down. We are getting a lot of shots on goal though.

Northview scores on open net. 5-2 final. That will do it. 29 saves for Northview goalie. Great effort. Congrats on your first title. Good run for the Eagles.

Northview has been there a lot and finally gets the first title (in any sport). Congrats on a great season!

While nothing will be done, something SHOULD be done. Northview, obviously a very good team, nevertheless only had to play one serious game to make it to the state title (TSJ). This is especially a problem in a sport where the bounce of the puck can decide winners and losers in competitive games.

Heck, there are only about 7 or 8 real competitors for this title. Can't we do better?

Bottom line is that hockey is a rich mans sport and
Only private schools and public schools in high soceoeconomic areas have a chance to win it.

Logistics and travel costs probably make the district system necessary. That said, setting up a rotation of the brackets for the final 4 may be a fairer system. Clearly the way the brackets play out now is an advantage to the NW champion as the Central & SW champion typically is not competitive with the NW & NE champion. I suppose that OHSAA doesn't do that because they want to avoid an all NE final. Not sure why as I doubt it impacts the gate. Nonetheless, with the possible exception of lacrosse no other team sport is so disproportional in the talent level from district to district.

Certainly the state could rotate district match-ups for the state tournament which would pit one of the Cleveland districts against Columbus one year, the next against Toledo and the third year against Cleveland.

I do understand how the state wants to involve the Columbus/Cincy area in a final four game, the sport needs to grow in those areas. It will take time, but those schools are getting better and more competitive. 25 years ago there were only a couple of teams in the Columbus/Cincy area, now there are more.

I believe they used to switch what districts played each other in the semis a few years ago because I remember Ed's playing Moeller in the Frozen Four, although somewhere in the early to mid 2000s I believe most state championship games had 2 Cleveland area teams in the Finals, from '02 to '04 it was Ed's vs. US, '05 it was Ed's vs Shaker. That was also right around when they moved the Frozen Four to Nationwide Arena and I believe re-drew the districts so that there was a Central/Southern district.

OHSHAA pulls name out of a hat every year for district matchups.
Purely luck of the draw....

I don't believe that anymore, just because the odds have to be against Cleveland playing Cleveland. But there is no reason to pull the names, a rotation can be set up and followed so there is "no more luck of the draw".
