Springfield Tigers win over rival Raiders
Springfield Local Tigers 33 South Range Raiders 28
In a game that featured over 700 yards in total offense, the Springfield Local Tigers outlasted the South Range Raiders to capture this key ICL rivalry match up 33-28. It appeared through much of the game that the team with the ball last, would come out victorious. Unfortunately for the Raiders, Springfield had the ball when the clock read 0:00.
The track meet started with South Range taking the opening kickoff and marching 65 yards for a Tony Darkadakis 3 yard touchdown run at 7:45 of the first quarter. Jon Styer added the extra point and South Range led 7-0. Springfield answered right back with its own drive of 68 yards capped by a Jon Vivo 6 yard touchdown run with Dan Schuler adding the extra point.
This is when Springfield built what looked like the winning scores. The Tigers scored twice in a row with touchdown runs by senior quarterback Dan Schuler of 5 yards, and senior running back Jon Vivo of 7 yards. At this point, 1:33 before the half, it looked like the Tigers had complete control of the game. However, with 30 seconds left in the quarter, junior quarterback Ryan Maxwell rolled left then cut right eluding tacklers for a 32-yard touchdown run for the Raiders. After a Jon Styer extra point, the half ended with Springfield leading 21-14.
To start the second half, the Raider defense forced the Tigers to punt after four plays. The Raiders then tied the score with a 45-yard march that ended with a 1 yard touchdown plunged by sophomore running back Tony Darkadakis. Springfield would not be intimidated, as they answered right back with a 62-yard drive of their own. This time it was Dan Schuler, like Maxwell, scrambling for a 20-yard touchdown run. The PAT was no good leaving the score 27-21 with 3:04 remaining in the third quarter.
The outcome of the game was really decided at the 9:16 mark of the fourth quarter when the Raiders drive was stopped on a Seth Sarty interception of a Ryan Maxwell pass deep in Tiger territory. The Tigers would then score on an Schuler 30-yard pass to senior receiver Sarty. Springfield attempted a two point conversion but failed, leaving the score 33-21.
The Raiders would mount a last minute come back attempt with a 52-yard drive that was capped by a third touchdown run, this time 2 yards, by Darkadakis. The score came with only 15 seconds showing on the clock. South Range attempted an on-side kick, but the Tigers recovered, and ran out the remaining seconds.
The Tigers were led in rushing by homecoming king Jon Vivo who accounted for 154 of the Tigers 282 rushing yards on 21 attempts. Dan Schuler contributed 86 rushing yards, while completing 6 of 9 passes for 78 yards. Seth Sarty was the leading receiver with 4 catches for 47 yards. Ryan Maxwell was the leading rusher with 128 yards for the Raiders, who had 196 yards on 35 attempts. Maxwell was also 13 for 27 passing for 154 yards. Tony Darkadakis who had three touchdowns also had 62 rushing yards for the Raiders. Senior half back Brian Novak had 5 catches for 60 yards to lead the Raiders in receiving.
The Tigers (3-2) will now face Mineral Ridge at home next Friday, while the Raiders (3-2) take on the league leading Lowellville Rockets also at home next Friday.
