9:39.92?

I'm finalizing the 3200m/2-mile class records. MileSplit & AthleticNET have records only going back so far. I'm curious if any other big programs in Ohio like Lancaster, LaSalle, Elder, etc., have their frosh boys' 2-mile records faster than a 9:39.92? If so, send the info my way. Thanks.

I believe the Lancaster Freshman Record is 9:40.91 (Adam Wise).

Checking other sources now... there was a significant stretch when Lancaster freshman went to separate school...not sure about the records from that period and not sure when the Lancaster freshmen first had a chance to run two miles on the track... we did not in the mid/late 70s.

You may have this, but Sharsu (Austintown Fitch) set the then national HS freshman record of 9:15.6
Thank you!!! I didn't have that one as my list is sub-9:10 right now. Thanks so much.

Anyone else in Ohio history with a freshmen stud like Scharsu?

According to this site, Sharsu ran 9:24 to set the age 14 record and freshman, then later in the season ran 9:15. I guess it depends upon whether he had a birthday between the two races. Either way, his 9:15 was the freshmen record according to this site. https://www.runningentertainment.com/runningshots37.html
I'm working to confirm this info.

Update: I've confirmed Scharsu's initial age-14 record of 9:24.8 which was set at the '75 Mehock Relays in placing 5th. Rudy Chapa (Hammond, IN) won that race in 8:59.2.

Also confirmed is Scharsu's later still aged-14 record of 9:15.6. However, I haven't confirmed the site/date of that meet.

I just visited EHS Sports, and it doesn't appear any Elder runner ran that fast as a freshman. Lancermania would be the best resource for LaSalle, but I don't believe they have a freshman under 9:40 either.

I have no idea what you have in your database, so I apologize if this ground has already been covered:

Zach Wills of Mason ran 9:15.34 in '08 when he won state as a 9th grader (and yes, there was plenty of discussion back then about how he was a year older than his grade).

Eli Ilg of Jackson ran 9:30.34 at the Federal League Meet in '22.

Based on current research, I'm thinking Scharsu's 9:15.6 may have come in placing 3rd at the Kent Roosevelt district meet on 17 May 1975.

The race was won by Pete Kummant in 9:02.7

Can anyone confirm or deny? Thank you in advance.

JAVMAN83, our freshman record at Steele is 9:30.7 by Jeff Wilhelm (District Meet, 1974)

Thank you. I'm reasonably sure now that Scharsu has the frosh 2-mile record state-wide, still, with a 9:15.6 in '75 when he was still 14 years old. Just trying to nail down the meet now. I'm thinking it was in the Kent Roosevelt district given that Kummant, Slater, and Scharsu went 1-3. Kummant & Slater went 1-2 at State, but no sign of Scharsu even though top 7 out of the district went to state.

The print has some fuzzy spots, but there's enough there to decipher that Scharsu ran 9:15.6.

Thank you again, sir! It sure appears to be the case. Also, Bob Slater (Cleveland Heights) is listed on T&F News' annual '75 summary as having run 9:07.6, and that also looks like it came from the same meet. Helluva district meet!
