School Names that are often Mispronounced

Campbell Memorial. In the Mahoning Valley, "Campbell" is pronounced "Camel" (the Gaelic pronunciation for the civic leader for whom the city is named). Beyond the Y-town area it is "Cam-bull."

Wapakoneta

Wa-paw-ko-net-uh

Or Wa-pawk for short.

Or Moon City (Neil Armstrong) 😜

St. Marys Memorial is known to no one in Northwest or West Central Ohio as Memorial. It's just St. Marys.
The funny thing is when they built the new school, the superintendent (I think, it's been a few years), who wasn't very popular started and wanted to refer the new school to simply St. Marys HS. People were outraged and demanded it still be Memorial High School.

It's kind of funny, our varsity letters were/are Ms. When I was in school, our basketball jerseys said "Memorial" on them. The fight song starts out "Ole Memorial..." However, the helmet logo has been SM since the 70s. It seems like Memorial is used for most formal things and some things outside of football. However, St. Marys is always used for football.

Pataskala Watkins Memorial
Although Watkins Memorial & Licking Heights never use Pataskala in front of their school name, it is funny to hear people try to pronounce it. I've heard Pa-Tah-Scol-A, Pat-Ah-Skal-Ah, even Pat-Ah-Lask-Uh-Ah. The real pronunciation is puh·ta·skuh·luh. As a sidenote, for whatever reason people sometimes refer to Licking Heights as Lincoln Heights.
Other cities I can think of are:
Gahanna (guh·haa·nuh)
Gnadenhutten (na·duhn·huh·tn) Valley
Ironton (I•ron•ton)

Funniest thing I ever heard was on national TV during one of the Herbstreit invitationals:
Colerain is correctly pronounced (cole-RAIN)
The TV announcer kept pronouncing it (COLLAR-an)

Conneaut up North and Gallipolis in the South, out of towners got no shot with pronunciation the first time around on those two. Maybe, them folks next state over should pronounce their Capitol Indian-a-POLICE.

Darn I’m late to the party. A few that I was wrong about, until learning:
- Chagrin Falls: thought it was Shag-rin, but it’s actually Shuh-grin.
- Mantua: thought it was Man-too-uh, but it’s actually Man-oo-eh
- Solon: thought it was Suh-lon, but it’s actually Sole-in
- I also made the Padua, Dalton, and Bellefontaine mistakes that others already mentioned.
