SBAAC Football 2025

Not to worry there's still plenty in the tank if these 3 boys don't play. All 3 are good players but not one of them are irreplaceable. Really hate to see 2 seniors sit out, id rather see them transfer out before that. The sophomore still has time on his side.

Truth of the matter is this, last years running game was the worst its been since CM joined the SBAAC in 2017with 3220 yds. Defense struggled against good teams with the pass and run game.

Offensively there was only one senior on the line, this fall there should be at least 3 seniors. Running backs have to improve and QB has got to be able to make plays with his legs if we aren't gonna throw it more, (1 pass against IH with a 6 man front?!)

Defensively we had a terrible time stopping the pass but also the run against good teams. Waynesville rushed for 110, Coldwater 204, Harrison 260, Wilmington 110, Indian Hill 111. We did hold Tri-Valley to 50 but they passed for 154 to our 11. Leave this here Defense wins Championships.

I don't see the HC being forced out this fall , however I do see him retiring from football the following season. The OC has a senior QB on the team so I suspect this will be his last year. Along with possibly the DC and a long time assistant coach.

If all of those coaches leave, CM is in trouble if they don't pass a levy. With no teaching openings, the replacement options will be limited.

EC was rejected, which is no shocker to me. Apparently it’s down to Miami East, Riverside and Grove City Christian. Lots of TRC schools did apply!
I know many EC is comparable to most in the South but have seen most of the South play for years and not just Football and live in Clinton County now and EC is just kind of stuck. I mean they are middling in most everything boys and girls sports. The OHC is a damn good conference and just feel they would struggle even worse than they do now from a competitive standpoint not to mention the less than stellar facilities. Just one person’s viewpoint

While I do like the OHC South fit quite a bit, I do agree. EC Facilities are not good at all. Their locker rooms/football field need some serious work. Also East Clinton didn't even have a JV football team some weeks this season I heard... also with no girls basketball season, I just didn't see them ever getting voted in over those other 3 schools. EC I think lost a softball game to Madison-Plains 25-1 a week ago or so. MP hasn't been a world wrecker in softball either... EC was losing 40-6 to Cedarville in football, I don't even want to know what Greeneview and MP would have done to them this year and quite frankly most years (In crossover games almost every OHC north team besides Triad would smoke them as well). EC athletics are a mess right now, and need some serious help, not sure where they would even start though.

Next man up. Nobody is bigger than CM football and can always be replaced. It's a well oiled machine that will keep going with or without them.

What kills me are adults allowing their kids to take the easy way out and quit or transfer when things arent going their way. Great life lessons being taught. But, who could blame them when they are seeing kids at the college level transfering at the end of every season. It's the new culture i guess.

Hopefully CM doesn't have anymore players sit out or decide to transfer. Overall, most of Massie's talent last year was this upcoming senior class, and they had a lot of good sophomores as well, even with these three losses they still have a ton of talent coming back. How is the middle school pipeline looking if you know? Is Massie losing any players at that level?

Massie's running game should improve, two of their better backs last year are both coming back (unless they are apart of the 3 not coming back), Chesser will be missed however, and I think he was heavily missed in the 2nd half of the year as well. I hope to see CM open up the playbook more. In past games I've seen of CM, if they can't get it done on the ground they tend to air out, and it has worked before, but this year it just didn't.

CM defense is going to need to step up BIG TIME on defense. Their OOC schedule this year is very tough again (Coldwater, Tri-Valley), and then in league you have Batavia who is returning their QB who just threw for 3600 yards and 42 TDs and a great WR, Wilmington is returning more than I expected with some good WRs, a good RB and a nice QB who will get his chance to shine. I don't think the SBAAC will be as free as it has been in years past for Massie. There are some solid teams returning a good amount.

I wonder if/when CM does lose their current staff if the new staff will maybe tweak the offense. Not like a complete overhaul, but maybe tweak it to add more passing into it. I think they could use it. But, if CM does lose this staff, I will be interested to see if they can keep this 20+ year run of dominance going.

I think CM is in trouble when this current coaching staff is done. Replacing that staff will be difficult and factor in their financial troubles and I can see a huge fall off. Whether you like their system or not, that staff gets the most out of their talent. Their record/state titles speak to their success. They would be smart to beg McSurely and staff to stay as long as they want to!

Before McSurely CM was just another run of the mill program. I overall like CM's system and culture, they play tough football and they have 3 state titles to show that! However, it will be very very hard to fill McSurely shoes. CM is built off of football! They should do everything in their power to try and keep the football team as competitive as possible. But the financial/ levy troubles will be their undoing.

I missed this, but Blanchester did hire a head coach, Robert Schooley. He was an OC at Purcell Marian last year who went 6-6, they did win a playoff game. Purcell Marian averaged 25.5 points per game. Overall Purcell Marian last year seemed to run a pretty balanced offense between running and passing the ball. Before his time at PM he was an assistant at New Richmond for 4 years, and Dixie heights for 2. His brother took the head coaching job at New Lebanon Dixie. From what I can tell this will be his first HC gig. Interesting hire, I will be interested to see what he does with the Blanchester offense, hopefully he can get some talent to work with. But he will not have an easy schedule at all in 2025.

These first four games are absolutely brutal, and they could very well start 0-5. At the very best I see this being a 4 win team. Good luck to Coach Schooley!

Lot's of good stuff in here.

Of course with those players sitting out , nothing is set in stone. I've also heard rumblings of them playing this season so time will tell. Unfortunately 2 of the players in question are RB's , and pretty good players but if it comes with the team killing drama I'd prefer they sit it out. No room for ME ball. The other is a LB and a decent player but let down by his Jr year performance, kid was a beast his sophomore year. However his younger brother is a incredible player. My dad, my brother, myself and my son all played football for CM, so I've seen this program all the way through the last 35 years and the younger brother (so far) is tall, fast, and all athlete. In my opinion he has the potential to be one of the best to come through CM.

I do think Chesser would have carried us another game or 2 last season, this kid just couldn't get anything to go his way. I really wish him the best on the rest of his journey. Outside of the CM family I don't think a lot of people know what he went through in his high school years.

From what I've seen and heard the middle school classes are complete opposites. 8th grade has really struggled and 7th are solid. I think with open enrollment ending a couple years ago, we're starting to see the class size reduce down in these younger grades. Probably looking D5 in next couple to few years.

I'm more optimistic about the coaching staff, and I think you're right. There's no way a outsider will get hired in, it will be alumni already on the staff that will go in to the HC role. And I do think this offense could use a tweek or two and I've seen a couple coaches in the younger classes already doing this with success. If your ego doesn't think there's room for improvement then it might be time to move on. Coach knows X's and O's but what he brings in more is that motivational talk that gets kids to run through walls for him, that's what will be missed. His voice is 100% football coach, loud and direct he doesn't mix words. I don't believe any coach is being forced to leave, HC is seeking 300 wins after that I think he's done, OC has enough years in teaching and his son is a senior I believe he'll retire next year. His other son 2021 state champ QB is on the coaching staff btw. DC has many years in this program and has to be close to retirement, not sure if he'd stick around. They'll be missed no doubt, however they been mentoring the next staff already.

Anyway there is a couple running backs set to compete for the starting jobs whether everybody shows up or not. And one of them is lightening, and a familiar CM family name. If everybody shows up and comes together as a team, they should be in the running to win the region.

Does anyone have some past records for CM? Maybe a far back as the 70s? When did CM start a football program? Thanks!!!

I saw a thread posted by eagle that has a lot of info on this, I believe its the very 1st thread... looks to be pretty accurate. I did see where they had a couple coaches swapped around tho.

Check this link out, it goes back to the 1970s. From 1972-1976 Massie was apart of the Fort Ancient Valley Conference (FAVC). From 1977-2000 they were apart of the Kenton Trace Conference (KTC), this conference eventually disbanded and quite a few of these schools would go on to create the OHC. From 2001-2004 Massie was in the SBAAC for their first stint in the league. 2005-2016 they were in the South Central Ohio League (SCOL), this conference would disband with 5 of its school forming the Frontier Athletic Conference (FAC) with Jackson. And from 2017-present they have been members of the SBAAC American.

As for when they started a program I’m not too sure. This link only goes back to 1972

The best part of CM football is that it’s never been about “Me ball”. In many ways CM operates like the MAC schools. It’s a whole team effort, and never just an individual. So if players are going to bring that drama to the team, it’s better for them to sit out or transfer to a school with better culture suited for them. Massie has had plenty of great players transfer as well, and they have always been just fine without them.

However I think the open enrollment ending will hurt them a little bit overall, but not as bad as everyone thinks. Massie does get a good amount of talent from open enrollment, but McSurely like you said is a great motivator. I’ve seen middle school Massie teams that were not very good at all do a complete 180 once they get to the high school level, and I really think it has more to do with great coaching then open enrollment/recruiting like some people accuse CM of.

I think an internal guy will be the best hire for CM by far. Only CM guys really understand CM football, HOWEVER, if they do go with an ‘external’ hire I think there would be a pretty good option, he’s now an assistant or coordinator at Bellbrook and had coached in Clinton County for many years, including the 2012 and 2013 CM teams, I’m sure you know who I’m talking about ;)

I have seen some of Clinton-Massies roster this upcoming year and I’ve seen plenty of familiar CM family names on the roster… I think I have a pretty good idea who you are talking about.

Yes a VERY difficult schedule to start the season and I think maybe the biggest obstacle is building the roster with numbers. The past few seasons they just haven’t been able to get many kids out.

Whatever happens and whomever eventually takes over I do hope it is the right decision as I have a young grandson in the Elementary that loves football. I also hope those thinking about NOT playing this year think long and hard because man you can’t get time back. I don’t really know what the situation is and have chosen not to know.

Lol, yep I know who, and I'd welcome him back. What's funny is their HC Jenkins was on the CM staff too, great coach believe he played linebacker in college.

Of course a lot of stuff I put out there is just my opinion. And don't mean squat and could be completely wrong but makes for good talking, especially just being April.

Coach Killen would be an excellent hire! Wife is already a phenomenal teacher in the district plus he’s great friends with the HS principal. Im almost certain the AD has a plan of action ready. A little cold out but it’s still a great day to head out to Todds Fork road to get some swings in! #golow

Coach Killen is a great coach! I know Wilmington had a bit of a decline at the end of his stay there, but that isn't totally on him. Wilmingtons 2017 team got destroyed by injuries, and the 2018 and 2019 teams were dealing with the decline of enrollment and athletes transferring/sitting out. Also, I know some may not agree, but the move to the SBAAC hit them like a train. The SBAAC American was way more competitive (especially in the 2017-2021 timeframe) then the SCOL ever was. Clinton-Massie, New Richmond and Goshen all fielded playoff caliber teams during this time. There was no more East Clinton, Hillsboro, WCH or Greenfield's to beat up on in league play.

Anyways, I think Killen would be welcomed back to CM with open arms. He would be a great asset for both sides of the ball, and both him and his wife have already been around CM for close to 20-25 years I would think. They know the culture.

Yes a VERY difficult schedule to start the season and I think maybe the biggest obstacle is building the roster with numbers. The past few seasons they just haven’t been able to get many kids out.
I agree. Blanchester has had some pretty solid football talent the past 8-10 years for their standard, but these last 2-3 seasons they can't seem to get much interest from the kids. Blanchester is also dealing with the issues that the other county schools are with losing enrollment as well. On top of that, Blanchester is now on what I believe is their 4th Head coach in the last 7 years? Can't really build anything when you're a HC carousel. Also, I am all about rivalries and I know CM/Blan has been a big one, but that series really should not be renewed once this contract is up. That is a game I don't want to see played until CM either falls more back down to earth or Blan gets some serious momentum and revives their program. Both schools are better off using that week to play competition better suited for where they are at. In all other sports CM/Blanchester is a fine matchup, but in football it does very little for either side.

I wouldn't mind seeing CM replace Blanchester with Bellbrook, and Blanchester maybe can reach out to one of the Highland county schools

Scott is a QUALITY person first and would great to eventually get him back in the fold.

Coach Killen would be an excellent hire! Wife is already a phenomenal teacher in the district plus he’s great friends with the HS principal. Im almost certain the AD has a plan of action ready. A little cold out but it’s still a great day to head out to Todds Fork road to get some swings in! #golow
He will never come back to CM. But it is a nice thought.

Exactly. They are cutting teachers left and right out there at the moment. Too much of a risk in my opinion.
He’s also an assistant principal at the Bellbrook Middle school as well. If Massie wants him to come back they’ll have to at least offer him a position like that or better.

Seems like something the AD shouldn't be sharing in public. That's highly unprofessional, maybe the board should vote on him too.
I was talking with the CM athletic director the other night at a baseball game and I got the sense there could be some shake up within the coaching staff. Also at the baseball game I was told a few of the top returners from last years squad are not playing this year. The April board meeting could be interesting…..#golow
