Recreational Golf 2019

My closest course, Spring Hills, in SW Summit County, is closed today as they are trying to drain a lot of extra water that has got on the course from all the recent rain. I love playing Windmill probably the best of all the local golf courses. I had the luck of winning a GCAT event at Windmill on a very cold day in April of 2017.
In Summit County, my all time favorite course to play is Barberton Brookside. Unfortunately, rumor has it that a residential developer has bought it and it will be closing at the end of the year.
 
Love Brookside. I wonder what is like in its heyday when all of the traps were filled with sand, etc. It will be a shame to see it go.

I've only played Brookside two or three times and liked the course. I just HATE to see courses closing.

One another note, the new owner at Sleepy Hollow has finally taken over and carts are now there to stay. I will be playing it tomorrow morning. Windmill is on tap for Sunday.

It will take some doing to get my money's worth. I plan on trying to golf every day, beginning on June 1.

We are teeing off at Windmill at 11:20. If you some old guys playing from the senior tees, that could be us.
 
Four of us, and many others, decided to try to play Windmill today. We teed off a bit later than our 11:20 tee time and were rewarded with a swampy course. Of course it was cart path only and Boy, was it ever wet! We played a five hour round and it was actually a bit draining. I don't think I've ever played a round on a course that wet.

Hopefully the sun shines and dries everything up.
 
I played 9 holes at Raccoon Hill tonight. It was without question the wettest course I have EVER played. There's been so much damage done to the course as a result of keeping it open that they'll really have to work to get it into shape by the end of the year. They haven't been able to mow and they have wheel ruts everywhere. We tried to stay on the high ground yet still got stuck twice. Almost left the cart and walked in at one point. They pride themselves in always staying open, but they really just need to shut down for a couple of weeks and let the course recover.

Did you play the front? I think when they designed the back, they must've been drinking heavily.

Yes, played the front.

The first three and last 2 of the back are decent holes, but the 4 in the middle are one of the worst stretches of holes around. I played there as a teenager with my dad when it was Shawnee Golf Course. Now, the conditions are better but they haven't figured out a way to blow up those 4 holes. Z hole...L hole... par 3 where you can't see the green...the world's shortest and tightest par 4. Quite a stretch.
 
A couple of the Country Clubs in the neighborhood were closed this weekend. It appears they have not cut the grass in a few days as the rough was up and they have not put down the weed killing fertilizer down as there were a few dandelions popping up which is unheard of at a Country Club. Probably best for the course in the long run but it was weird driving by on a nice Sunday and seeing the course empty.
 
Spring Hills was really wet when I played it recently. They probably could have closed it for a few days also to let it dry out a bit. I noticed some wheel ruts also that are going to be difficult to repair.
 
I played Glen Eagles in Twinsburg yesterday and it is still very wet too. The wheel ruts and soft soil are not ideal for play and because they too have not been able to put down the weed killing fertilizer the dandelions were out in full force. But what really stood out was the rough was still at US Open length and now it is starting to go to seed. Hitting out of the stuff was near impossible.
 
Wow, over a month since anyone has posted in this thread. We must all be playing poorly! LOL.

I played today for the first time at The Quarry, down east of Canton. Beautiful long track with huge elevation changes. A very humbling track. Worth every bit of the $32 I paid.
 
LOL I thought the same thing yesterday after seeing the US Open thread.

Crooked Tree, a local course I have never played (?), is running an ad on tv. Cash flow must be less than desired. Hmmm...

I recall The Quarry being pretty expensive but they've really brought down the fees. I have to think it is an expensive course to maintain so I wonder how it is doing financially.
 
Avon Oaks is still very wet and cart path only. This weekend's weather won't change that. When I was younger courses were dried up in May. This new normal kinda stinks.
 
Was out at Sweetbriar Legacy today. Fairways were damp, but in good condition, as were the greens. Traps were in terrific shape.

The roughs, however, were hit-or-miss: plenty of standing water. Silver lining was that all this wet weather scared off the Western ‘Burb masses that inevitably clog this nice course to the tune of 5-1/2 hour long rounds.

Their Sweetbriar course has been closed a few days due to flooding. That 18 has really become a dump, anyway.

Man, watch the shakeout of course closings take place between now and 2020’s golf season.
 
Still very wet out there and after speaking to one course Manager it has been a brutal year to be in the golf business. Not only have they been fighting the wet conditions and maintenance fees are higher than normal they are also losing revenue with rounds played YTD way down. Also, that rain out on Fathers Day was a killer as it is one of a course's single busiest days of the year and that revenue will never be made up. A lot of courses closed this year and I would think more will be closing at the end of the year. This looks like the future of golf in this country>

I just returned from a week in Sanibel, Florida.

I bought a three day deal at The Dunes. It was in great shape and was an EXTREME challenge. It's not a long course, but there's water on every hole, and I mean EVERY hole. On some holes you had to hit over water to get to a landing area, then over water again to get to the green.

The last three days I played The Sanibel Golf Club. There was water, but not as challenging. I really liked the set up and the owner was very courteous.

I think I lost 18 balls, total, on the trip.

What ever will you do to restock with the KSU course now closed?
 
We decided to tee off at Windmill Lakes at 11:30 today, figuring it would be dry. Imagine our shock at the ever present CART PATH ONLY sign. We spent an unbelievable amount of time hunting shots in the fairway or a little off the fairway, that were either plugged or sitting down in the unmowed, deep rough.

I walked off in disgust after nine holes and minus four balls that I lost in the fairway or the rough. Not OB, but playable. The course is a mudhole.

Out of the 11 rounds that I've played there, I've played off the cart path only twice. I will not play cart path only there, again.

Frustrating. That course has some spots that really hold water. There were some ugly clouds north of Tallmadge last night and I bet they unloaded out there.

I played the Quarry a couple of weeks ago and it was cart path only. I've never been so exhausted from a cart round.

We played the Quarry a few years ago when it was cart path only. Yes, it made for a long and exhausting day.

Myron and I also played Longaberger a few years ago when it was cart path only. You talk about a long and exhausting day!

Longaberger was also the place where Myron and I witnessed a member of our party toss a wedge across one of the greens, resulting in a huge displacement of green. Myron and I just put our heads down and walked away, hoping no one saw the incident, and escorted us off the course.
 
Back to my dog track at Sleepy tomorrow, followed by a Tuesday morning round at Windmill, assuming that carts will be allowed off the path. Back to Sleepy on Wednesday and Thursday.

I'm still hoping to get my money's worth after having lost out on several rounds due to not having carts and the spring rain.
 
Played Pine Hills this past Friday. For the most part not in bad shape but we did get a 20 minute shower mid round and since the ground is still saturated there was standing water in the many valleys throughout the course. They were also re-constructing with heavy equipment a green side bunker on one of the holes and the guys doing the work were very inconsiderate. I am thinking they were contractors as they were not wearing helmets and kept working while we hit in our approach shots, they also kept working while we were putting; the greens keepers would stop working once we addressed the ball. Played fairly well and always like the course. Tough to get to though from the east side of CLE which is a good thing as it was not crowded for a Friday afternoon and play moved along.
