Rank The Ten Best Teams In Your School's History

Lima Senior

1. 1996: 13-1, D1 state champs. Ended Ignatius 5 year state title streak
2. 1989: 10-3, lost in state semis to Moeller. TRIPLE OT. Moeller would go on to lose by a TD to Ignatius for the state title.
3. 1993: 9-3, lost in the 1st round of the playoffs. This was the infamous play in season where we hooked up with Westerville North I believe for a play in game because of some computer point glitch.
4. 2014: 8-3, this season I put ahead of the 2015 and 1997 squads only because they put up some impressive scoring records that season. Most points in a game and most points in a season that year.
5. 2015: 9-3, Fell's last year at the helm sadly.
6: 1997: 8-3, lost one we should've never lost to start the season to Toledo SFS. Lost to Colerain their first year in the GMC (our only GMC loss that season). Every Colerain kick off came straight to me that night. To this day I'm convinced the Colerain coaching staff was like "alright guys, here's the game plan, kick it to the fat slow white upback EVERY time, got it?". To be honest, it was a good game plan on their part, I'd a done the same.
7. 1988: 8-3, first playoff team in school history

Honorable Mention: 1966 team went 8-1 but did not win the GOL.

Toledo St. Francis de Sales

1). 1984 - 12-1 (DI State Champs)
2). 2001 - 13-1 (DII State Champs)
3). 1997 - 11-1 (Lost to eventual State/National Champs Canton McKinley 25-22 in regional final)
4). 2002 - 12-2 (Lost to eventual State Champ Chaminade in Final 4)
5). 1982 - 9-4 (DII State Runner-Up)
6). 1998 - 10-1 (Prior to playoff expansion and missed playoffs. Great team. Defeated a huge Moeller team 28-7 - beat SJ in HOF game 42-7)
7). 1983 - 9-1-1 (Prior to playoff expansion and missed playoffs. Great team. Had several DI guys)
8). 1968 - 10-0 (TCL and Shoe Bowl Champions)
9). 2009 - 11-2 (Scott Loy was tough. Lost to one of those great Maple Heights teams).
10). 1993 - 9-2 (Prior to playoff expansion. Lost last play of the game to Lima Sr. and State/National Champs Iggy - beat DCC's best team ever according to long time coach Tom Mach).

All but one season (1968 - Mattingly) coached by Cromwell.

I caught grief from some guys I went to UT with who were on that 1998 Knight squad. We went 2-8 that season and they use to complain that had we won one more game that would've been enough points to get them into the playoffs. In all fairness SFS did finish 6th in the region that season. So to blame a 2-8 Lima Senior squad for your misfortune is well accurate haha.

That 98' team was legit. Only loss was on the road at Canton McKinley (eventual state champs - Mike Doss and others). They pizz pounded a Moeller team that had a DI Oline (Munoz-Bell).

Emil Price was a stud RB and Joe Iorio was the center and he went on to start at PSU as a true freshman walk-on, a first under Joe Pa.

My dad went to Euclid at the same time that VASJ had Howard and Grbac. He's told me those VASJ teams were incredible. Euclid had Robert Smith at the time as well. Used to be a big-time rivalry game. The two teams stopped playing each other because the fans would always get into fights during the games.
During that time O.J. McDuffie was at Hawken and Ricky Powers was at Buchtel also

I had the unfortunate assignment of blocking (well tossing my body in front of him) Munoz in our scrimmage with Moeller that season.

I cannot remember the name of the running backs on the 1993 team but they were an absolute b$tch to bring down. I believe one's name was West? One was 6'2" 240lbs. and the other was 6' 220lbs. By the 4th quarter I called no mas. :D

The 1996 teams was simply one of those special groups. Morris, Bratton, Christoff...rinse and repeat.

1993 RB's were #49 Doug West (his son played for Lima Central Catholic and went on to play at Kentucky) and the other was #34 Aloysius Walker.

One thing I miss are the Knight / Spartan match ups to start the season back in the 90s. Dick Cromwell v. Leonard Rush. Tough to beat those two head coaches and the teams they brought to the table every week 1.

Trimble

Tie- 1: 2019 (11-1) This team was something special. Outscored opponents 448-6 in the regular season, in a tough region 21, beat Salienville Southern at home 26-14, then taking New Middletown Springfield to the brink only to come up short 20-19.

1: 2013 (14-1) This team was also another special team. First team in school history to get past the 2nd round. Beat Shadyside after being down 14-7 at
the half. Beat defending West Virginia Class A state champion Wahama 12-7. Beat Berlin Center Western Reserve 14-10 to advance to the school's first state title. And only held Marion Local to 13 points in the first half. (Yes, I know, nothing to get excited about but it's Marion Local we are talking about.)

3: 2014 (13-1) This team was another dominant team in Trimble history. Beat Caldwell in the 2nd round 14-10 with a game winning touchdown with 12.6 seconds left. Beat Shadyside a 2nd straight year 31-21 for their 2nd regional title in school history. Their season ended in Mount Vernon coming up short against Norwalk St. Paul 41-13 at a 2nd straight state title appearance.

4: 2018 (13-2) This year was special as Trimble didn't start the year out with a home stadium. Everyone doubted them that year going into week one against a Nelsonville-York team who finished 13-1 and fell to Kirtland in division VI final four. Trimble beat Nelsonville-York for the first time since 2014, 34-7. Lost a heartbreaker in their first game back at the new and improved Glouster Memorial Stadium to Cincinnati Hills Christan Academy, 21-20. Beat Harvest Prep 7-0. Beat Lucas 21-14 for their 3rd regional title in school history in the final seconds. Throttled Cuyahoga Heights 47-21. Then fell short to McComb 28-3 in the Division VII state title game.

5: 2012 (10-2) This Trimble team I think set the tone for Trimble football. Beat Nelsonville-York 21-14, the only regular-season loss was to Class A state champion in West Virginia 25-12. Then, started a shutout streak of 6 straight games. Finished the regular season 9-1, and then beat Colonel Crawford 41-6 in the first round of the playoffs, then took Newark Catholic to the extreme, just falling short 20-13.

6: 1980 (10-1) First ever undefeated team in school history, lost to Newark Catholic 21-14 at Newark White. (I have very little info on Trimble football before the Phil Faries era).

7: 1989 (10-1) 2nd ever team to finish 10-0 and qualify for the playoffs, but lost to Franklin Furnace Green 43-22.

8: 2001 (10-2) The 2001 squad was a tough one. Only losing to 9-2 and Division V playoff contender Southeastern 7-6, the team won every game to finish 2nd in the region and face conference foe Reedsville Eastern 23-6, giving Trimble their first-ever playoff win in school history. The Tomcats faced Danville the following week at Newark White and lost 41-16.

9: 2020 (8-1) This team was young. After losing almost everyone to graduation, and having to replace a whole line was a tough task but Trimble fought through it. 4 seniors strong, the Tomcats clawed their way to a 2nd straight undefeated season, a 3rd straight outright Hocking title, with huge help from 15 freshmen. The Tomcats proved they could compete. Beat Monroe Central 47-26 in the first round of the playoffs, then beat Berne Union 35-14 in the 2nd round, then tested Newark Catholic for 3 quarters before falling apart in the fourth, 35-19. This team proved they could compete with anyone you put them against. I say 2021 is gonna be a special season.

10: 2017 (9-3) This team was sophomore heavy. A very good young team, finishing the regular season 8-2, losing to Divison VI State Semifinalist Nelsonville-York 21-0 in week 1, then Waterford 30-12 in week 4. The Tomcats made their 8th straight playoff appearance and had to travel to Lucas who was also 8-2 in the first round. This game was huge. It showed the young Tomcats aren't a walkover and beat Lucas 20-19, and getting the schools first-ever road playoff win. Danville would beat the young Tomcats 27-10, but Trimble made them earn the win.

It's amazing to think of all the great coaches that Leonard Rush had work for him over the years.

Any list of those coaches? I would be interested in those names.
Ricky Vaughn- DC of the 1996 state championship team. Head coach at Lima Senior in the 2000's
Darnell Collins- Freshman coach in 1996. Head coach at Lima Senior in the 2010's
Frank Crea- LB coach, Special Teams coordinator of the 1996 team. Head coach at Shawnee in the 2010's
Keith Horner- Assistant on the 1996 team. Superintendent at Wapak and now Apollo Career Center
Derek Kidwell- Assistant in the late 90's. Head coach at Hopewell, Fremont Ross, and Fostoria
Mike Fell- Assistant in the late 80's. Head coach at Grove, Celina, Ada, Lima Senior
Dan Kirby- Assistant in the late 90's. Head coach at Perry, now an assistant at Shawnee

Very impressive list. Lot's of guys still coaching right now too on that list.

there is a picture of a mentor team in a bar . it says in 1950 that team was undefeated and unscored on

From the 1951 Mentor H.S. annual (which would have the 1950 football info)

Mentor went 3-6

The Mentor 1949 team didn't fare much better that data is in the 1950 annual.
The '51 team was better but didn't go undefeated.

Classmates annuals is your friend for looking up past records.

My alma mater- St. Vincent-St. Mary:
2013- 15-0- State Champs
1981- 12-1- State Champs (Loss at Massillon)
2012- 13-2- State Champs (losses at Massillon and Mooney
1988- 12-1- State Champs- (loss to Mooney)
1972- 10-2- State Champs (losses to Akron East and Warren Western Reserve)
1982- 11-1-1- State Champs-( loss to St Joe's, tie with MLC)
1974- 9-2- AP Poll Champs
1961- St. Mary- AP Poll Champs
1991- 10-3- State Semi-finalist
1979- 9-2-1- State Semi-finalist
St.V, not my alma mater, but it would have been, had I not moved out of the area. Because of this, I have always been a big Irish fan. My Mom was a grad of St. Mary, in 1940. To add to your list Clark,
St. V
1948- 8-0, out scored opponents 203-42
1953- 10-0, out scored opponents 212-32
1954- 6-0-3, opened the season with 3 straight ties, then won 6 in a row
1961- 9-0-1 out scored opponents 241-37, this is the year St.Mary was the AP Poll champs.
1962, St. Mary followed up the year previous championship season with a 7-1 record, their lone loss to Mogadore. This season included a 76-0 win over Dover St. Joe and an 82-0 win over Woodridge. In 1963 St. Mary became an all girls school.

In chronological order are the best teams in Wooster history: 1960 10-0, 1982 won first eight games, 1985 went 8-2 but given the chance could have challenged anyone in the state except Moeller and didn't allow any points in the first quarter, 1986 regional champion, 2003 and 2004 OCC champion and division I playoff team, 2014 hosted playoff game with Orrville watching from sidelines, and the last three years

I can only really speak of the teams from 1994 on, but using year-by-year records and PF-PA before......

Defiance
1 1997. No one else comes close. Probably a top 10 team in all divisions in the state that year, rolled to a 14-0 record and a state championship. Outscored opponents 36-7.8, only game within 10 was the state semis against Lebanon.
2 2000 12-1. WBL champions, D2 AP poll runner up. Lost to Buchtel in OT. 33.5-14.7. Not necessarily dominant, but effective.
3 1942 10-0. NWOAL champions, outscored teams 36.1-4.9
4 1933 10-0. NWOAL champions, outscored teams 25-3.1
5 1994 10-2. First playoff team, first playoff win. 33.2-9.3.
6 1991 9-1. Lost to St. Marys, 5th in region 8. Kinda the start of the glory days of Defiance football. 30.5-7
7. 1953 8-0-1. NWOAL champions. 33.3-5.3.
8. 1931 8-1-1. NWOAL champions, all time great defense. Allowed 22 points all season. 20.8-2.2
9. 2001 9-3. Lost to Avon Lake by 3 on a last minute interception in the end zone in round 2. 24.8-12
10. 2003 10-3. Battled eventual state champ Avon Lake into the 2nd half but wore down, losing 27-6. I'd say this was the last "great" Defiance team. 27.3-16.2

Honorable mentions- 1996 7-4, first WBL championship team. 2008 8-3, WBL co-champs, lost to 1 seeded undefeated Avon 7-0 in round 1. Last "good" Defiance team.

Didn't they lose in the first round the last 3 years? They had some good teams for OCC, but never quite were able to do anything beyond that. I do remember the 85&86 teams...wow.

True, but there were some dry spells particularly when Wooster seemed to be the laughing stock of Federal League football. Moving to the OCC gained some respect. Doug Haas will certainly be missed.

With a long and rich history of athletic success, Milton-Union has had many great teams since the 1920s when it completed as West Milton High School which produced Carl Brumbaugh, who was the QB for the Chicago Bears which won the NFL championship of it's day under coach George Halas. Team mates were Red Grange and Bronco Nagurski.
Long time University of Dayton football coach and College Football Hall of Famer, Mike Kelly is a Bulldog alum, along with Olympic Gold Medalist, Bob Schul and college football Hall of Famer, Chuck Green.
Top Ten:
1. 2006- 12-1 Regional final team. Won the SWBL title behind the skills of Mitchell Evans, who went on to star at Indiana University.
2. 1978- 10-0 SWBL Champions. Gave up only 21 points all season. Didn't make D3 playoffs due to criteria in that day of top 2 making it. Milton finished 3rd.
3. 1949- 9-0 first SWBL Champions for Milton-Union
4. 1960- 9-0 SWBL Champions. Produced Oakland Raiders QB Charles Green.
5. 1977- 10-0 SWBL Champions.
6. 1966- 9-0-1 SWBL Champions. Beat Northmont for the title.
7. 1982- 10-0 SRC Champions. Missed D3 playoffs finishing 3rd in region 12.
8. 1968- 9-0-1 SWBL Champions.
9. 2002- 7-3 first playoff team in Milton History.
10. 2012- 8-2 SWBL Champions. Regional Finalist d4 r r6.
