Portsmouth Trojans Bright Future Ahead

The Portsmouth Trojans girls basketball program is very soon going to make a big splash statewide in a couple of years. Just this past season the Junior High Lady Trojans finished an undefeated season and with it an OVC championship. The JH Trojans started three 7th graders and two 8th graders. In 2 years they will join up with Dasia Reid, already touted as one of the best freshmen in the state. The JH Trojans defeated Fairland 3 times to win the conference title. Coach Amy Hughes, a former player for UConn, is the head coach of the high school varsity and her father Mike Hughes is the coach of the JH. Amy already led Ironton to the state tournament while coaching there, whereas Mike has a decorated resume himself coaching both boys and girls basketball.

Just giving a heads up for a team to watch in the coming years. Wouldn't be surprised if these girls make a trip to the Final 4 pretty soon. The key is to keep them together, and so far that looks promising given what the potential of this group can be. Portsmouth had an undefeated regular season in 1984 going 20-0, losing to Millersburg West Holmes and Lisa Cline in the regional semifinals 54-44.

This is a once in a 30 year group that could completely change the girls program at Portsmouth HS. The excitement around town is building, and the expectations will be higher than they've been for a long time. It will be 2 years before the impact of these girls will show on the court.

GO TROJANS!!
