Playoff Week 1: Fairfield

No I don’t think Fairfield was any good, Elder D is just plain awful, Clown! 1-6 season, Fairfield Stinks!

Elder D came up with a big stop to force FF to a 3 and out in the 4th quarter with a little over 5 minutes left. They also got the pressure to force the intentional grounding call on 3rd down to take FF out of FG range. It wasn't a great performance by the defense, but they came through when the game was on the line. They will need to play better next week against a more talented Princeton team.

3-0 ... LS had a bye this week, waiting for the winner of the Loveland at Little Miami tilt. Always glad to see unbeaten GCL weeks, though.

I forgot LS had a bye. The GCL will take a loss next week since Moeller-X play each other. I think X wins, but Moeller should keep it closer than the first time.

I think St X is going to have their hands full with Moeller. Moeller has improved every week.
X continues to improve each week as well— although the pass defense (which looked “passable” against Walnut last night) is still highly suspect against teams that throw the ball accurately (as Ig showed)— but X’s offense improves from week to week, regardless of who plays QB, and the front 6/7 on D have been solid all year... so Moeller is going to have to pass the ball well (and better than last time— as Omar notes) to even keep up in a scoring battle with X’s offense.

That said, as an X fan, I’d like to see the #1 QB out there, even as well as #3 has played (#2 is out for year)– it was an unflagged late hit by an Ig passrusher (well after the throw— if it was the NFL, it would have been flagged) that knocked out #1 (again) last week, after more than 500 yards passing and 5 TDs.

Fairfield Stinks, the Elder D Stinks! Elder should have had the Running Clock going by the Half. Sure hope Princeton turns the ball over a lot because the Elder D certainly won’t stop them very many times.

Princeton has pretty much the same skill level talent, so it’s going to be high scoring again next week. The Defense is capable of playing better, we’ve seen that even in games they lost vs X & Cathedral. Tackling, shedding blocks, keeping containment, angles on downfield tackling all need to get much better or the season ends. It’s really that simple.

Elder is always going to struggle with speed because they simply don’t have any on defense. The secondary has been pretty good, especially Flowers. But you can’t continue to expect them to make all the tackles in the open field against these fast and agile backs. The LBs have to step up.

Which is why I’ve been preaching about getting better athletes on Defense for over a decade. The more concerning thing was Elder also getting torched by runs inside the Tackles. Losing Spinney didn’t help, but it was a problem before he went out

Yes, I agree. Does anyone have the season stats on how many yards they give up per game via the run vs the pass?

I can’t recall a game where they were exposed in the passing game.

I was at the game on Friday night and one thing that really impressed me about Larkins was how much he is trying to pump everyone up especially on defense. Since he was on the field a lot of the night during those times that he was not he was wa;lking up and down the sidelines talking everyone up.
Great job!!

Interesting - I would have guessed they gave up more in the running game. Thanks for posting.

He’s a great leader. I mentioned this before, but not many D1 TE recruits would so willingly take on the role(s) he’s doing. He’s pretty much a 6th OL/FB/H-Back instead of a Pass Catcher at TE. There’s no glamor in what he’s asked to do, but he does it without complaining.
