Pittsburgh Pirates Thread

So what do you all think about Shelton pulling Skenes after the 7th with a no hitter yesterday? I was following the game on MLB.com and given the pitch count, score and recent history with handling Skene I thought it was likely to happen. After seeing some of the comment in the media (and Holderman immediately loading the bases in the 8th) I’m rethinking the decision.

I think it was stupid to pull Skenes. I believe I heard he threw about 8 pitches in the 7th inning. MAYBE (Maybe) if he struggled in the 7th ( a couple of walks, some hard hit outs, etc) I could see it. But Skenes is a big guy, not a teenager and was presumably going strong.
Especially with Bednar on the DL and Chapman hot and cold. 2 more innings wouldn't have put his arm in jeopardy. He's only going to throw an inning or 2 on Tuesday
BTW- was surprised to hear that Jerry Reuss in 75 was the last Pirate starter for the All Stars. I would've assumed Drabek and/or Cole would've gotten the nod at some point

Nice start for the second half of the season. I don’t know if the Bucs can secure the Wildcard but maybe they can keep me interested till October.

Another win against the best team in baseball. Ortiz pitched lights out 7 shutout innings. Bucs 6th or 7th ? win in a row. Maybe he’s the 4th starter they are looking for?

6th win in a row. When healthy, Skenes, Keller, Jones and Ortiz can be formidable. I still think Falter has good stuff- just gotta put in together. Dotto for the the meat of the bullpen with Holderman, Mlodzinski and Bednar. Chapman still has some gas left in the tank
I wish they had another dependable bat on the same level as Reynolds. Too many guys hitting 250ish

Don't try to view batting averages. If you have guys with OPS' .800+, you're fine

Cards managed to win 1 of 3 games despite only scoring 3 runs in the series. Hopefully the Bucs sign a bat in the next week. Although with so many teams within WC range the competition for the best available hitters will be intense. It would be helpful if K.Hayes would pick up some slack…when did he become such a punchless hitter?

Rumor mill has the Pirates making a move for Jazz Chisholm from the Marlins. Would be a needed improvement in the outfield and at the plate. Don’t know if it moves the needle much overall though

Yeah, Chisholm would be an upgrade, but not some earth shattering move. Getting a Jazz Chisholm would benefit a strong offensive team looking to add depth. He's not the guy to plug an obvious leaky hole

Seriously? He is a really good young player and would instantly be the best non-pitcher on the roster not named Reynolds. Sure he lacks some plate discipline and Ks a fair amount, but he makes a lot of hard contact and would have much better stats if he was not in that giant ballpark in Miami half of his games.

I agree that he would be the 2nd best non pitcher. But I think that's more of a testament to the Pirates less than stellar offensive production. Looking up Jazz's stats, his numbers aren't as good as I initially presumed. However he is on pace to have his highest RBI total.

Better than O’Neill Cruz? Really? I don’t know a lot about Jazz but if he’s better than Cruz then why would Miami ever trade him? If they are serious sounds like Bucs would have to give them more then a few top prospects

The numbers do not lie. Oneil is where Jazz was 2 years ago - occasionally spectacular with great potential. Miami is trading him because he is at $8M this year and arbitration will take him higher next year, and they are too stupid/cheap to give him a long term contract.

In Yankee stadium Jazz will be 30/30 every year.

-EDIT- Sorry I mixed up Chisholm's salary with Arozarena. Jazz only makes $900K and is under team control until 2027. The Marlins are stupid beyond belief.

Bucs pulled one out last night but I feel bad for Skenes. It wasn’t his best outing but still only surrendered 2 runs (1 unearned). He should be at least 8-1 at this point. Hopefully they pick up a bat from somewhere today but at this point that seems unlikely. Seems everyone that were discussing has already been traded.

Pirates acquire LF Bryan De La Cruz, INF Isiah Kiner-Falefa in 11th hour of trade deadline.

I don’t know much about either but their stats look respectable and should provide some help.

De La Cruz is now tied with Reynolds for the most HRs and is second on the team in RBIs. Kiner-Falefa was a gold glove recepient in 2022 as a 3rd baseman. His .292 average will also be the best on the team as of today. Both players are signed to contracts past next season.

You Pirate fans should be happy. De La Cruz is really good and under team control for 3 years. His power numbers have been held down by the huge park in Miami. You got a really good one. Why Miami traded him is beyond me. They just don;t care about winning and just want to save money I guess.

IKF will be a nice veteran utility guy and solid bat as needed. I wish my Reds had made the moves that your team did.

Skenes not at his best yesterday but left with a 3 run lead. The bullpen is in a rut Pirates could easily have swept Arizona. Next…

The bullpen is now atrocious. Holderman, who has been living up to his name, is on the DL after a bad couple of weeks. Bednar is not exactly lights out. Just got swept by the Friars

I forgot it was a day game and caught up in the eighth ahead 6-5. As soon as the first Padre got on in the ninth I knew there was trouble brewing. Now Bednar may have escaped if Cruz hadn’t thrown the ball away but it was a jam of his own making. I think the Bucs may want to move Chapman into the save role for the time being. I was actually hoping they would pitch him in the 8,9 innings today. Now off to the West coast where they rarely play well. I’m thinking this season once again is toast.

Are there 2 categories for ROY pitcher and everyday player? I haven’t been paying attention.
