I'll have a conversation about sports team names, but if you're on here saying Native Americans don't deserve to be respected because of casinos and poverty then I'm going to need your address so some friends & I can have an intimate conversation with you...

Oh, and if you want to pick a group of people who've been SCREWED by the US GOVT the line starts behind them. Wars for land, relocation, smallpox blankets, give up the Black Hills then take it back once gold was discovered. Frankly, if anyone considers themselves an endorser of "Govt bad" politics, you’d find Native Americans as the perfect poster children.
My point isn't that Native Americans should not be respected or have not been cheated by the US Government. However, there is a narrative that changing team names will set things right. That's all. By the way, I think we owe them much more given what I saw. That's a separate conversation.

Instead of pressuring sports teams/schools to change nicknames, maybe the pro sports leagues or universities can make real investments in our Native American reservations.

This is not a driving narrative. At all…

If not set things right, at least make those changing the name feel better about themselves. Either way, in some cases name changes are very warrented. In others, just the opposite. Some nicknames like Central Michigan (Chippewas) reflect the history of the Chippewa tribe and its connection to that part of Michigan. Others are different. In fact the choice of Indians by the Cleveland baseball club was far more complex than the common reason given, to honor Louis Sockalexis. Each situation is different so we'll leave it there. If a school district feels good about a name then change so be it.

Any entity has a right to earn unlimited sums off of their own name and likeness… Were there any natives drawing revenue from their likeness in ANY scenario OUTSIDE OF THE FLORIDA BASED (and only the Florida based) SEMINOLE NATION? Nope. Were the mascots/team names potentially insensitive to an entire people (w/o any benefit)? Probably. So change the name. Why? You can’t solve all problems for everyone, but if you can fix one small thing that helps somebody else, then I think you’re doing your part in what’s right. “What man is man who does not make the world better?” < this kind of thing.

Well said. I agree with most of what you said. With this premise then do we bring in other potentially insensitive non-native American nicknames? Could you make a case that "Fighting Irish" is insentive? Either way, if like the Seminole Nation, a group of people could benefit then that's great.

Find an Irish pacifist.
Find enough of them to feel incensed.
Organize them to fight. (Oops)

Pretty sure we didn’t round up any Mc’s and force them to reservations from a comparative history standpoint, but I’ve been wrong before. (A lot.)

I think an individual’s reaction to all of this is up to said individual. Is it a non-issue? Is it a hill with turd’s rolling down it? Why are you at the bottom of the turd hill? Perspective.

The slippery slope of “caving” to minority voice or view point (in a way that literary requires no investment on our part btw) isn’t exactly my generations last stand. We’re not fighting our own blood in the fields to cater to a “minority voice crying out for change”. It’s a small change. A simple improvement. And quite frankly doesn’t keep me up at night. Dramatic change, and dynamic shifts have always marked our history. Evolve. Adapt. Overcome. Times change. Move the hell on…

My Brother in Bandwidth, there are entire storied school districts that don’t even exist anymore. Just merged…like it never existed. Monikers are silly. Silly to be offended about? Sure. Silly to be worried if they change them? Also, sure.
I actually agree 100%, silly to be offended by, silly to waste time and energy on changing the them.

Saw Northwest recently......after having lost much of their trench personal from last years squad - they still seem to have plenty of size upfront...going to be an interesting year, you could probably pick their record out of a hat and sell me on it regardless of the numbers...

Random #PACtion: Nickles Bakery.

That was my summer job while in college: hot, dirty, and fast-paced with unpleasant hours. I could tell you a lot about that place. For example, the good smells are vented outside which makes visiting Navarre even more pleasant. The bad smells would stay inside. You'd be hit with the smell of stale bread as soon as you walked into the plant. The mixing room smelled like a brewery by the end of a shift. Production areas were dirty due to how much flour is needed to move the dough through the machinery without sticking, hot due to both the ovens and due to the need for heat to aid in the proofing process, in addition to the proof boxes which have the heat and humidity of a tropical rain forest. The finish areas were much cooler and cleaner cuz the product needs to cool before it can be packaged, and flour is not needed to keep the product moving after it leaves the production line. However, the pace of work was extremely fast in the finish areas.

Loved it so much that I would routinely buy Schwebel's products, haha. IIRC, shortly after I began my 1st summer, I read in the paper that Schwebel's had outbid Nickles for the contract to supply bread to Fairless schools. I was at Nickles when they built the addition that added the computerized bun line and moved the bread line to the back of the plant.

One of the lines from their radio jingle was spot-on: "Quality is baking, long before you're waking." I worked numerous positions with start times b/w midnight and 5am. At the start of my 3rd summer, management shifted all start times to 4 hours earlier, so the old-timers who had bid on jobs to get an 8am-4pm shift suddenly had 4am-12pm instead. They were not happy. Ran into a former colleague a few years after college, and he said they were working 4 10-hr. shifts instead of 5 8-hr. shifts. I would've liked that better. I'd gladly have worked 2 hrs. longer each day in exchange for a day off and 1 less day of getting up early. No idea if they're still on that type of schedule or if they're back to 3 8-hr. shifts a day on their busiest lines. I don't know about now, but the place had earned a reputation of being a horrible place to work from long before I ever worked there.

The most useful thing I learned from the job was the nature of private label products. In most cases, there was no difference in the dough formula that was used to make Nickles' bread and buns vs. the various store brands. They just change the packaging as orders are filled.

While back in Ohio last week to cover Virginia competitors in the All-American Soap Box Derby, I made my usual pilgrimage to Al's Quality Market in Barberton to stock up on Slovenian and Hungarian sausage, as well as pierogi. Stopped by Ignite Brewing and was very impressed. When I come back for games this fall, I'll have to check back in there to make sure my initial impression was the correct one. It may take several trips for the sake of accuracy. 🍻

Like our Superintendent says. “No one is complaining about it in our community.”

We are the Northwest Indians. It makes me sick to my stomach that the liberal media and newspapers try to always start this crap about Native American mascot names. It’s to the point where they are trying to brainwash people and pressure school districts and professional sports teams to change the mascot name. Northwest even with our turf installation did not put “Indians” in the one endzone in fear that the day would come where the mascot name change would happens. I hope it never happens.

Canal Fulton, Lawerence Township, and Clinton are very conservative areas in stark county and unfortunately we do live in a Republican vs Democrat Society now.

So all you Biden and AOC lovers out there go find something else to complain about and try to find gratitude on being “offended” by a flipping mascot name.
