PAC 2023

OK ... a football post. Here goes.

I took a look at the 2022 Northeast Inland District list and, from that, produced the Key Returners and Key Losses for each team. The only exception? I added Zack Miller, who was injured half way through 2022. He didn't appear on the Inland District list, but I added him.

Three of the five Northwest OL are on the list, but obviously, all five are gone. The order of schools is based on the Division structure. Hence, CVCA, which competes in Division III, is at the top.

The goal: Just to see who has what coming back. And what pieces need to be backfilled/replaced. Have a look:

What does it tell us? First thoughts ...
  • This is Canton South's year ... but we knew that already. They really didn't lose much. Did X Williams get any looks? Even at D3? Kid could stretch a field.
  • CVCA has a good young core coming back. Youngest team in the league last year. But the OL took hits through graduation. Can they backfill?
  • Northwest. It's all about the OL. @CasualFan24 is confident. He better be. You certainly don't doubt that Coach DeMarco will coach them up.
  • Fairless? Has the window closed? Not many Falcons folks on here, but on paper, they lost a lot.
  • Orrville. The surprise of the PAC last year. You have to think they'll have something to say in 2023.
  • Triway. New coach. New QB. Tons of injuries a year ago. Might need some time. But you never know.
  • Manchester. New coach. Same players. Can they learn how to win?
  • Tuslaw. Harbeitner and Snyder had their moments. Is anyone waiting in the wings?
I would say the Stark Media Network or whatever they call it, WHBC and all the other Canton broadcasters should get Canton South on their broadcast schedule pronto.

Orrville, NW, CVCA over .500

Fairless somewhere around .500

It’s 400 posts, two months and 13 pages ago, but I tried to generate some talk about key returning players and losses from a year ago.

Here’s that post link.
'Cuse has always been this guy and we are all better for it.

Unfortunately for him, instead of being surrounded by gentile men in suits, he's got us...a motley crew of individuals that carnival workers use to scare their children into doing a good job on their chores. "You scrub that puke off those Scrambler cars or you'll end up being one of those #PACtion people. Not the CVCA kind either. One of those other degenerate ones!"

I see your challenge & will combine the answer for double points: PreGame meal of John George's Double Trouble subs, EXTRA mayo. Kicker feeds the offense to keep their hands dry and wipes the excess on his shoes & socks to give the squib kicks extra "english". LBs & Dline eat while in full uniforms so drippings slather their uniforms greating an unblockable goo. Even Koach France's "run outside & have lead blocker hug the linebackers" scheme couldn't defeat a proper dose of JG's Double Trouble.

....Say, do you think John George's will accept my Quizno's gift card?
This is an outstanding plan. Could the receivers load up on John George's baklava for the sort of sticky glue fingers that Dante Lavelli would approve?

Your Quiznos gift card will get you one of John George's famous $4 cigars from the counter.

#PACtion

WOW...you do have to have a thick skin in PACtion...I have been called "a motley crew" and an "ambiguous affinity" in (Yappi's version of name that tune) in less then 11 posts...lol

Blue Streak Office has generated heat like The Iron Sheik after defeating Bob Backlund in the 80s. Bob seemed like a good citizen CVCA kind of guy. Winner, good neighbor.

---

I have a gut feeling this PAC expansion thing will just take a longer amount of time than people originally thought but eventually in 3-4 years you'll see school #8 emerge whether it's an Akron Springfield or Coventry sort of candidate but, again, I don't think 7 schools is a bad option for PACtion.

The only negative to the current PAC at 7 is the bottom half is shrinking, the top half is growing. If the trend continues long term that would obviously be an issue. However with no ready made matches for any of the teams to go anywhere else I imagine the PAC is here to stay

You made me look.

Current 9-12 numbers of each of the PAC-7 school districts, followed by current 5-8 numbers of each of the PAC-7 school districts. Numbers are from the ODE's fall 2022 headcount for each district:
Canton South: 831, 514 South's current 11th and 12th grade classes are huge compared to the rest of the district's classes! Is the population at Multi-County Correctional Facility included in these numbers? The teaching staff there is employed Canton Local, IIRC.

Fairless: 329, 431 Could the 9-12 numbers not be including students who attend RG Drage or who have chosen to stick with online instruction since 2020? Reported 11th grade of 39 kids and only 64 seniors sounds way too low.

Northwest: 558, 533 Freshman class of 164 is the largest class in the district. Could NW be winning the open enrollment wars at the expense of surrounding PAC schools?

Tuslaw: 323, 445 Tuslaw's current junior and senior classes are the smallest in the district pipeline, especially the junior class. I know their junior class was extremely small (as well as disproportionally skewed to the female side) back when they were in jr. high, but could they also be suffering from kids attending RG Drage or kids who chose to stay online?

Manchester: 413, 399 Manchester numbers are pretty steady across the board

Orrville: 407, 486 Same thing as Fairless and Tuslaw. Really small junior and senior classes that are the smallest in the district.

Triway: 375, 471 Same theme as Orrville, Fairless, and Tuslaw.

Tuslaw is fine and fits in. They just need some good leadership.

If anything, Tuslaw has a close relationship with Massillon with many people, which is fine, and many of the family ties go back decades with a lot of Massillon Tiger alum. All good.

You'll go through a Tuslaw school district subdivision and see Tiger flags. It's good with me and it's reality. I'm also not sure these school consolidations got it entirely right 60 years ago but the past is the past. Good Tuslaw leadership over a consistent amount of time could build more wins.

Alan Osler and Melissa Marconi aren't leading any district to a higher level. Scoring well on a slanted political Ohio Legislative report card? OK. But you're not ultimately winning over the average voter and/or parent & resident.

At the end, they're not from the district and deep down don't care enough about the unique situation that the school district operates in.

You've got to "sell" Tuslaw while realizing that operating as the past with little to no communication isn't gonna cut it.

Back in the day, the Blue Streaks had great games against the Mustangs....we used to have T shirts that said Beat Tuslaw! To this day if anybody asks me what we are going to do tonight...I say...Beat Tuslaw..lol. Mustang stadium...they were the first school to have the ability for the opposing coaches to get up on the roof of the visiting press box. Then while on the roof the cows would come over during the game next to the field behind the press box...and I would say they call us farmers...lol. The only school in the county without field turf..which is a good thing.

Also the first visitors box to have dead animals in it when we arrived. That smell lasted the entire game.

Not allowed on top anymore, either. :(

I completely agree - I could see Orrville being a very good team come fall time. Who will NW start at QB for 2023?

Either the same QB from last year Badger (he'll only be a Junior next year) or if they think the Pappas kid has can do it, they'll throw him in there and move Badger to an athlete type roll.

TBH - he was quiet all last football season, and didn't hear a peep out of him during basketball season...and the kid got decent minutes off the varsity bench!
If things got bad enough that you had to move your kid to the next district over, I’d imagine the son set some conditions as well.

And people do change. Look at me - once a scout, now so skevy I own rejection letters from ANTIFA & The Proud Boys…

If they're both good...John could play them both at QB...he likes to do that...along with having them on the field at the sametime ...but if one can really sling the ball over the other, that is who he will use. NW had a good year last year...but John was going crazy...he had to run the ball a lot because of his personnel. He hates that...lol

Well the bellcow RB Miraglia will be back for his SR year.....gotta imagine a continued heavy dose of him again next year

Yeah IDK that he's capable of that much change.....I think perhaps even he knows it was unrealistic for his son to start varsity football at QB as a Freshman. As for basketball - Lower has been there for a long time....and isn't going to take the comments like Schindewolf always did....now that we have a full year under the belt though, I'll be curious to see how this season goes......

Also helps that the home stands at NW stadium are large and spread out v. what they were at Manchester.....much harder to hear one blowhard

Looks like he has experience there...John is not stuck in an offense mind set..he will adapt to the players he has...he just wants to spread all over the place....lol...

I love Canal Fulton. Great little town. Happy to see that Northwest has had success in football over the last few years.

Are the Indians the favorites going into 2023, or is it Canton South with their excellent QB?

I think NW will compete for a league title again. I would NOT call them the favorites. This coming season could be a lot like last year....CVCA, Canton South, Northwest, Orrville....I expect them all to be fighting for the top spot. I wouldn't count out Fairless either, their QB is outstanding.

They say imitation is the best form of flattery. Therefore, I'm going to borrow from an old Friday staple on one of the Syracuse boards I frequent. We'll see if I can keep this up ... but here's the first installment:

It's Friday and What Have We Learned This Week?

Its Friday GIF by The Office

  • Onside Kick-6 and Sideline use of iPads for Official Reviews are OK. As long as the game is in New Franklin.
  • Toledo Macomber was in line to join the PAC, replacing CVCA in the fall of 2025 (and you thought Loudonville was a long drive!). Unfortunately, their application was rejected since the school closed in 1991.
  • @Raylan_Givens still has his Palm Pilot. And an affinity for Quiznos. Did someone say roadtrip?
Quiznos Lorain.jpg

Quizno's, Lorain, Ohio
  • I may - or I may not - be using my white-collar lunch break to draft this post
  • Tuslaw will be Double Trouble this year with a sticky variety of trick plays. Check out John George's Deli, if you're in the area. But you have to visit. Note: No delivery. Also ... no website (trick plays have to stay secret!)
  • Kate Upton loves her some PACtion. At least I think that's what we learned. Maybe
  • The visiting press box at Tuslaw apparently doubles as a veterinary training clinic during the week. At least before Triway visits.
  • Orrville is going to be good next year. And there might be a quarterback battle at Northwest
  • And @Rich Kotite is using the late April time frame to reacquaint himself with his dentist.

119 Days til Kickoff, my friends. Have a great weekend!
