Facebook’s Oversight Board — which earlier this year upheld the company’s suspension of former President Donald Trump — slammed the social media behemoth on Thursday, saying it withheld information during the case about the uneven enforcement of the company’s content moderation system.

The board said Facebook withheld or provided incomplete information about its so-called cross-check program, which shields millions of high-profile and VIP users from the company’s standard content moderation rules.

Is the argument here that Facebook should have protected Trump from himself? Or told the Oversight Board that Facebook knew Trump was breaking the rules and Facebook let him, until they didn't?

Facebook maintains an expansive program that exempts athletes, politicians, and other high-profile users from its typical moderation process, according to The Wall Street Journal. The program is reportedly meant to stop “PR fires,” or bad press caused by pulling down photos, posts, and other content from high-profile users that should have been allowed to stay up. In reality, the program just lets these users break the rules in ways that would have gotten most people into trouble, according to the report.
