Ohio High School Football Coaches Association announces the 7on7 State Championship. 2 Divisions, 4 regions will compete and the top 4 teams will advance to the state championship. The regions were announced but deleted, so they maybe be tweaking them.

Before someone says it, yes this trophy will not mean as much as an OHSAA Title. Please don’t say “DoESn’t MatTer, reAl ChAmpIOnshIp iS In DEcemBer” because we are all aware of that. This tournament is about COMPETING, it’s the summer, everyone is just trying to get better. I don’t see a reason for a team not to sign up, the regions will most likely have a ton of different teams to go against, so that’s making your skill position and overall offense go against a variety of defensive units, so why not challenge yourself???? On the flip side, every team competing will be playing to win the tournament, so we will be getting elite competition in June.

Anyone with any more information please share here, full team list will be posted as soon as I can get it! Football is one step closer.

This doesn't sound legitimate... or even legal.
It was tweeted by the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association, so it is legitimate. And it specifically calls out that it will not count against team coaching days, so they must have been working with the OHSAA on this for an exception, as well.

Even if it is legitimate, people will still find a reason to complain about it, but I think it's another neat opportunity for the athletes who will participate.

If I was a coach, I'm attending this. Those regions don't have a limit from what I understand, meaning you can get a ton experience against statewide competition. Another benefit, TEAM BUILDING! It is you and the other team in 7on7s, you win you play more, you win by playing as a team, so if you don't, you don't win.

This is way better than those AAU type teams, it's on our turf watching actual teams, not super teams vs a team from Texas.

The championship means nothing, it shouldn't be if you win this tournament you are future state champions, but it's beneficial and FUN for teams. Bottom line.

I guess if the two are working in conjunction, then there wouldn't be an issue. As the other poster said, better to have this than the AAU-type model

The OHSFCA has hosted a "state championship" 7 on 7 for years now, it's just typically been a 1 day thing. This IMO is essentially just an expanded version in hopes to promote 7 on 7's being a school/team thing and keep kids away from the AAU crap

I support that attempt . AAU is an absolute mess.

My personal opinion is that OHFSCA and OSHAA should just stay out of it all together. You want to let the boys have fun, let those that want join the Club 7 v 7 teams and have their fun. Schools and coaches shouldn't have a monopoly on the boys. Football is basically year round already with the before school lifts and nonmandatory workouts. I'm for the boys playing, working with, developing friendship with new and different people. Working with different coaches can help them grow more as players. Not all these 7v7 programs are bad or can be stereotyped. Some have set up recruiting trips as well as focus on success off the field. That's my 2 cents.

So this tournament will be actual Ohio high school teams that choose to participate and not collections of talent?
Exactly, don’t see how kids don’t team up with other friends to do this tournament. Easily could see kids from Ed’s and Glenville teaming up.

I hope coaches aren't penalizing their kids who are missing this for other sports. Again, the glorious aspect of Football was always that it isn't year round. Also, coaches are quitting by the second because the expectations to do more has skyrocketed and the pay as stayed the same.

It’s like Midwest Live if you are familiar with that in the basketball world. I honestly see it being the same benefit as that, kids who are wanting to be recruited should ask their coaches to attend, if you put on a show showing of your raw talent, could boost your stock as a recruit.

As for the AAU style teams, I think it’s cool to see when Ohio brings it to some national groups, but don’t like just seeing a random bunch of athletes from 12 schools, this style should be more valuable during summer.

It does not occur in an NCAA D1 Contact period like Midwest Live does for basketball. At that point in June, all football contact has to be on a school campus which is why they have so many camps during this time frame. This looks more like a money-maker for the OHSFCA and the OHSAA than a recruiting event like Midwest Live. In fact, the finals of this event are during a dead period where there can be no contact between coaches and players. Again all that is based on the NCAA D1 recruiting calendar. I'm not sure of the other levels recruiting calendars.

Speaking of legal... how legal is this?

I know it's legit.... However, I"m talking about the OC on this team is the OC during the regular season for the starting QB on this team... is that legal lol?

Coaches in other sports coach club teams. The teams have a limit on the number of players from 1 high school that varies by sport.

Yes, idk the exact rules but a coach is allowed to coach "X" number of his players during the club/AAU season. Similar to basketball, I could be wrong but I think a coach can have 3-4 of his own kids on an AAU team

Good thing this starts weeks after the state championships in real
Track State Championships are June 7th. This is June 16th. All real sports practice for 9 days before a “State Championships Tournament”?

What’s next. State championship 3 point contests in the fall. State championship home run derbies in the winter. State Championship Volleyball serving contests in Fall.

Are you butt hurt because it has the word "State Championship in it?" If a school was hosting a 7-on-7 tournament the same day, what's the difference?

Heck, Ohio State is hosting a 2 huge 7-on-7 events in June. One is June 11, and the other is June 18. Are those dumb? Is a school dumb for signing themselves up for either because State in track in June 7th?

7 on 7 is a practice period. Good luck at the State Championships tough guy. I hope you win inside run and red zone state championships too. Be sure to post pics of your rings! Can’t wait to see them.

Duh, it’s an opportunity to get reps. And the ones held at colleges are camps used for players to be seen. So again, I ask (because you said it) is it dumb for guys to go to camps in the summer or team camps in the summer? Nobody is going to hang an award from a State 7-on-7. Same way nobody is going to hang a banner for a summer league basketball win.

But hey, since summer league can only happen in June, and state track meet is first week of June, those are dumb, and anyone who does them are dumb.

Bet they do.

Exacxtly.

Does anyone know what teams will be participating and where the 7 v. 7 Regional Tournaments are being held on June 16th? The only Regional Tournament location I know of so far is at Perry High School in Lake County. I believe Kirtland will be playing there, but I do not have any other information about game times or what other team's will be at Perry. I checked the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association website today, but there is no information posted which provides the site's, schedule of games, or teams participating.

Thanks,

Al
