OHSAA State Bowling Tournament

Now that the OHSAA will sanction a Bowling State Tournament in 2006-2007, do you expect the number of schools participating will increase dramatically? It's a fairly easy and affordable team sport to organize and an OHSAA trophy is always a great prize.

Last season around 160 boys and 160 girls teams bowled in Ohio. I think that number could double or more with OHSAA recognition. Any town with a Bowling Alley may end up with a team. I'm sure the owners of many of those bowling alleys would love to support the schools.

Many schools, including mine (St. Edward), have had bowling teams for 20+ years. I think the OHSAA was way late in recognizing this sport.

To be honest i thought the whole reason the OHSAA sanctioned bowling is because there were dramatic increases in schools participating, and there's some OHSAA rule on the amount of schools needed to officiallly sanction a sport. Doubling participation may be possible, but not likely (I must admit I don't know how many schools there are in the state so the 320 right now- and I am lead to believe some schools have both boys and girls teams, and they were counted separately- could double). Citing the rule I must disagree with you saying that the OHSAA is late in recognizing bowling as a sport, because there weren't enough participating schools (I don't know the exact details but I thought I read in the paper it had to be 150 schools). That being said, I'm pretty happy the OHSAA finally recognized quite possibly one of the most exciting high school sports ever.

I hope it shoots up, but by no means is it a cheap sport. If you dont have a bowling alley thats nice enough to give free lane time it can be expensive. Especially if you look at tryouts, lots of practice and around 8 home matches, not to mention travel, uniforms, and coaches. The price shoots up real fast. Like I said though, I hope many more schools come up with teams in the near future.

Travel?
Do these kids all board the same bus and travel together? I don't think so. What travel costs are you referring to?

Uniforms?
Khakis and a polo shirt. How much can that be? $30 tops? Much cheaper than pads, jerseys, shin guards, etc for these other sports.

Coaches?
Do other sports' coaches get paid? If so, then this is a common expense, not exclusive to bowling. Sure, coaches should need certification in bowling instruction, but I know one local center that has pushed many coaches through the Ritger program at little to no charge to the coaches.

Practice Time?
Yes, centers deserve to get paid for lane usage, as they've a business to run and machines to keep functioning. Schools don't have the luxury of their own bowling centers on "campus", but how many years of practice are needed to equal the amount of money spent on stadium construction/renovation for other sports?

Travel... yeah some public schools do take busses to matches.. fairfield for one has in the past

Many schools are offering to pay for lessons and training for bowlers. Also, schools make close to $0 in revenue from bowling.... unlike a sport like football and basketball where they can charge a lot more for admission and apparel. Renting out lane time for everytime you want to practice or have a match adds up in a hurry. Also the price of decent equipment for individual bowlers is around 450 bucks, which I know a lot of kids can't afford. Overall bowling is a relatively expensive sport, but I love the fact that it is finally getting some recognition, and I really hope that it takes off even more in the future.

$450?? Bowlers don't need "state of the art" brand new equipment to bowl with. These schools needs to hit up their home center and allow them to hold raffles to raise funds, collect donations of used bowling balls. There are many fundraising activities at their disposal. You don't need a brand new ball to perform well. I have a ball that was given to me (a lefty) 7 years ago by a friend of mine (a righty). I still use it today and have 3 300's logged on it.
Technique and training are what make a good bowler, not equipment. Putting a ball in the hands of a bowler not ready for such equipment not only doesn't help him, but hurts his growth as a bowler.

I can't argue the revenue statement much except to say that HS athletics needs to function as one entity, not "football money", "basketball money", etc...

Didn't I just say the same thing, but with proper gramma, spelling and punctuation? :thumb: :p

a lot of schools had bowling has a club, not a sport. now that it is OHSAA sanctioned, i expect nearly ever bowling club will become a sport. I do not know what the next "new" sanctioned sport will be. Some states sanction weight lifting. I bet many schools could put together a weight lifting team.

Alright so uhh, why don't we just give the trophy to Keith and not even have the tournament, sound good?

Naw. We need Keith to prove to everyone how good he is and then maybe next year we will just give it to Keith. Either way, he is going to be a two-time state champ.

There are too many other sports that are growing and already have some form of state or regional tournament organized. I doubt weight lifting would be the next on the OHSAA radar screen.

More likely:
Lacrosse
Team Tennis
Boy's Volleyball

Saw alot of turkeys today...
Some kid on Elder's JV had a 299 and a kid on their varsity (same that had a 300 vs lasalle) had a 267 and a 300 going into the 10th frame which he got a split on his first ball.

Cant wait to play Elder in the Tournament...they seem like a real good team. Oh....by the way...cj improved to 10-0 today :thumb:

Elder has a great team, and their two highest matches weren't even at western (2950 at colrain and a 2919 at Pla Mor) . If I heard correctly though, I think that all 5 of their starters are seniors. Go GCL!

C-J Elder would be a good match

Too bad C-J & Elder aren't bowling each other in a match. I know they will square off in the GCL conference tournament in a couple of weeks though. C-J has all of their starters back but one and have added 2 new freshman who are pretty good along with a couple of Juniors who never went out for the team before who are also good. They go about 9 deep with averages between 190-220. Western Bowl seems to be having a high scoring pattern this year, which is unusual for that place. Hopefully, the GCl could have 3 potential state qualifiers this year with Elder, C-J, and Lasalle. They have had 2 the past 2 years (C-J 4th in state in 2005, 9th 2006, St. Xavier in 2005, and Lasalle 2006). The GCL also had the Boy's individual champion in 2005 from C-J (Curtiss Rasnic Jr.). In Dayton, the GCL is looked at as a weak conference, and the GWOC is looked at as a powerhouse, but they are misinformed. C-J last year beat state powerhouses Fairmont, Centerville, & Fairborn last year and have already beat Troy this year at their place (Winner of the Holiday Torunament) and are scheduled to bowl Centerville & Fairmont in the upcoming weeks. The GCL can hold their own against any conference in bowling. Not too many conferences send multiple teams to state year in and out. What are everybody's thoughts out there regarding this?

WOOOH!!! I'm one of those Juniors you were talking about. Now i promise im not trying to brag...but in all honesty we are REALLY good. I've averaged over 190 and are still not starting on varsity. We have curtiss who is averaging something along the lines of 220...and a freshman (JJ) who is around the 225 mark. I dont remember the teams we played but we put up 2900, 3142, and 3085 in consecutive matches. Also, you bring up a really good point. The gcl is seen to be pretty weak, but we have a couple phenomenal teams this year. CJ, Elder, and Lasalle are all doing extremely well. Also, Fairmont seems to be not as good as usual...but i'll let you all know first hand when we play them the 19th at their house. I've bowled with many of centervilles bowlers in USBC doubles and singles tourneys and what i've seen so far is impressive. Don't know how they perform in bakers (i'll let you know that the 25th, also at their house). Both should be great matches. If you live around dayton you might want to come check us out. Finally, i think the GCL can hold its own great this year. We have a few powerhouses that i think can go far in state. Who knows...maybe us or elder could win state this year.

P.S. your right. We have two freshman, one sophomore, one junior, and four seniors on the varsity team...all who average over 190.

No, the one who bowled the 300 was a junior. and sometimes a second junior will start too. it all depends...
