Norwalk DII District

Would like to get some chatter as this district starts tomorrow. Hammers at every weight in always a tough district.

This probably will be the statistically most productive district at the state tournament this year. You add Aurora and SVSM while taking out some of the weaker teams that used to come over from the northeast (Buckeye stays). It's going to be tougher this year than probably any year since the year they stupidly brought Graham up.

There’s 5/6 teams that can be “on the board” at state. Aurora, SVSM, Buckeye, Ashland, Bellevue and Columbian could all be top 10 teams IMO.

On top of that, about 17 or 18 individuals with legitimate finalist chances. Will be curious how it unfolds

At 132 you don't have anyone from the 2nd quarterfinal, predicted to lose to Minnick in the top semi, placing.

Smiley2424, you're right. I misread my own worksheet. Alley and Adkins cross together (Alley the pick) into Montgomery (2nd quarter winner).

That's heartbreaking for Phillips. I've been watching him wrestle since 7th grade. Great kid with a great work ethic. Would have loved to see him make the podium. I also heard a 220 is scratched? Mears from Tiffin is in.

Implications of the Clayton DQ are that the Overmeyer/Deiter semi is now almost a must-win match, as Clayton crosses into the loser.
The top semi is George vs. Molina, with Antwan Sagaris (who lost in OT to Overmeyer) the likely go-to state opponent.

The other big upset on the night was Pahl winning Willingham at 145 in the quarter, which means he hits Simcoe in the semi. The bottom semi is Jones vs. Kinzel, with the loser looking at the Willingham/Mullens consi quarter winner to go.

Also on the night, Skinner beat Mayes 7-2 in the first round, and then hit the semi. He'll face Engle there, who upset Allen 2-1 in the quarter. Thomas from Clear Fork was eliminated with losses to Pinc and Allen. The top semi has Pinc against Torres with Allen looming as a possible go-to opponent, while Mayes is the most likely go-to opponent for that bottom semi loser.

Twigg did beat Smith 3-2 at 106 in the quarters, though that doesn't really impact the balance of power in that weight class.

Thanks for the rundown @bucksman was just going through the bracket to find any 4 over 1 upsets. Saw 3,120 kieshinski (Ontario) 3-2 orpzadek (Perkins), 126 Skinner (SVSM) 7-2 Mayes (Bellevue) and Simms (Fostoria) Fall Montgomery (Shelby).. skinner and Simms both are in semis, curious how many more we get tonight.

All mat returns take you to your head and shoulder, this one was over backwards. Does the rules change in front of you versus over back. I think trapped arm would be the call but I’m not a ref.

Having Aurora and SVSM go to Norwalk balances the districts out so much. If they stayed at Perry you'd be looking at potentially 7 out of the top 10 being in the same district. State podium caliber kids have been left completely out of the state tournament because of how brutal the district was. Still a very tough district.

152-285: 152 John Metzger (Ashland) 2-0 Trevor Badiu (Buckeye), 160 Jacob Schlessman (Wapak) 8-5 Ryan Steppenbacker (Buckeye), 220 Kane Mears *alt (Columbian) Fall Dominic Burch (Bowling Green)

Of the 6 4/1 first round upsets, 4 of those came from wrestlers out of the Clyde sectional. I’ll be curious at the end of the tournament how many qualifiers come from each of the 4 sectionals.

FWIW I think Clyde and Beachwood will be very close and I think they will have a significant amount more than the other 2.

Definitely Metzger beating Badiu stood out. Columbian freshman at 182 in the semis could end up making it out. Freshman Nietenbach having an outstanding year, most likely wins 138.
Some good matches tomorrow, finals rematch at 160 Ray vs Turnbaugh, 182 semi Mayes vs Barrett. Possible rematch at 195 consi semis Hatley vs Corapi. Lot of Clyde sectional placers in the mix for alot of the weight classes.

By the numbers... SQ and placers by sectionals

Clyde ............. SQ - 18 DP - 30
Beachwood ... SQ - 16 DP - 23
Defiance ........ SQ - 12 DP - 19
Sandusky ...... SQ - 10 DP - 12

Clyde had a hell of a sectional but one thing I noticed digging through brackets there was quite a bit of “triple dips” and “double dips” out of that sectional.
Good Luck to all those moving on, make NW Ohio proud!
