Northwest Ohio Realignment

It’s crazy that the SBC name is left with a group of schools, aside from a couple, with very little history in the conference. Is the “SBC” the SBC without Clyde, Perkins, Edison, Oak Harbor, or Huron? Probably, but it’s hard to imagine for this old head.

SBC founding members in 1948:

Danbury
Elmore

Genoa
Gibsonburg
Oak Harbor
Port Clinton
Fremont St. Joseph

If anything this new league setup will closer to its original roots.

That stable 8 team era from 1986-2014 is what the SBC is most known for, but in the decades preceding that era the conference had a revolving door of members leaving and joining. Northwood and Ottawa Hills will be the 29th and 30th schools to have ever been a member of the SBC (Edison became the 18th in 1986)

That’s interesting. I’m in the group that knows the SBC as the power of the 90s and 00s, so I’ll have to continue to adjust.

An old head myself, but I find it interesting that realignment of high school athletic conferences in Ohio seems to the historical rule rather than the exception.

A little history :

NOL was a long time, respected entity. Should have never gone away. Why does everything have to be creative when it simply works?
When the NOL folded they initially said it was to merge with the SBC. The SBC quickly dispelled that and made it clear that they were accepting new teams into their league. Why would the original SBC schools want to start a new conference and call it the NOL? Also, the rights to the NOL name might belong to a school that won't be included in the NOC.

I also don't think Northern Ohio Conference is very creative.

NOL was a name voted on and that name was voted down.

Some of us who are even older remember the Sandusky Bay Conference of the 1960's and 1970's. A league that sent Fremont St. Joseph to the 1974 state title game against Middletown Fenwick. The SBC was a great, and strong league.

Good move for them, however there are going to be some sports they absolutely crush these schools in. They will probably never lose a league title in this current setup for baseball, golf & soccer.
Their boys' and girls' soccer teams will be independent

Or state semi-finalist Fostoria St. Wendelin in 1976 coached by Eugene Peluso. I was stunned when they dropped football, but it was only a harbinger of what was to come. Butch Weyer had some good teams at SMCC back when it seemed like they were everybody's rival. I always thought back then that the SBC was a better league when St. Mary was competitive/good.

Again, why does it have to be creative? They're northern. They're in Ohio. They're a conference. No need to overthink it.

NOC is a fine name. The NOL was pretty blunt as far as names go. Minimalism at its finest. Granted, the SBC had some great descriptors for their divisions and overall name. I similarly don't think tossing in some arbitrary Ohio symbolism like Buckeye or Cardinal into a name makes it much better.

And as far as voting down the NOL name goes, branding a new NOL would make the notion of league titles a bit odd. Who would lead the NOL in basketball titles? Willard has at least 20 on their banners. Shelby has 25+ NOL track titles. Just go with a new name and keep history fresh.

NW Ohio small school sports were better when SJCC, SMCC and St.Wendelin were at their best in sports. They all had some great teams in various sports. Only Calvert and St. Paul are really left competitively out of the Catholic-five group. Say what you will about private schools, but there were certainly packed houses when they played each other or someone else local.

Lima Central Catholic and Delphos St. Johns

I remember growing up when Lakota v. Gibsonburg would enter week ten 0-9 (on average) and the stadium was still full as it was a fun rivalry.

That is good, then there would be no reason for Elmwood to join another league with those schools if they are already playing those schools non-league.
I agree we was already in SLL with most of those schools. We fit just fine in the BVC and it really isn’t much farther drive times.

0-10 with most games not close.

You do fit....as the newer, larger Vanlue.
Yeah you’re right not beating everybody like they thought they would. So I see no reasoning behind some of the people wanting to leave the BVC? Woodmore isn’t much. Enter than Vanlue these days lol
