Netflix in 2019

A lot was said about Netflix being in trouble with it losing content such as Friends, The Office, Disney/Marvel content, and more. Some thought it might be the beginning of the end.

However, as we head into awards season, they have three bonafide awards contenders in multiple categories with the following:

The Irishman
Dolemite Is My Name
Marriage Story

All three are getting major awards buzz in the categories of Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress.

When’s the last time a single studio had three Best Picture contenders?

I also thought new seasons of Jessica Jones, Stranger Things, Mind Hunters, The Ozarks and You were very good. Netflix is putting out a lot of really good original programming.

The Punisher was awesome too. I just wish they would’ve gone full R rating. It’s weird they have no qualms with The Punisher caving in a dude’s face with a dumbbell, but they won’t him say the “F-word”

No idea

Saw Irishman and Marriage story

Irishman felt like a highlight reel of the last 40 years of mob movies..... nothing new if you've seen the standards

Marriage story? I've been divorced. That was two actors reading lines from what a third actor thinks divorce is like. It's far more hellish than that.

Dolemite is on the list. I look forward to it.

That being said I really like the series work they do much better. Most of the marvel stuff is great. Peaky Blinders. Mindhunter. Probably some others I'm not thinking of.

The Irishman was nowhere near on par with Goodfellas or Casino.

I feel like everything Netflix makes is blah. Not bad but not great either.

I wonder if watching it at home instead of a theater has a subconscious factor.

I know I’m more distracted watching stuff at home.

Mindhunter might get cancelled. That would suck so hard, it is the best show on NFLX and that includes Stranger Things. In fact, it’s substantially better than Stranger Things

Anybody else watch Messiah? I just finished it this weekend and it was pretty solid as well. A lot of subtitles as the story takes place in both Israel and America, but I liked the idea of the show and the questions that it raises.

Not yet but it's on the list.

I wonder sometimes if they get paid if certain shows to be streamed. The suggestions they give...
You, Fall From Grace, 21, Aaron Hernandez and Red Dawn are like nothing I watch. So why suggest them? And the interface has gotten just a bit too pushy. I don't like the auto vids/sound and can't find a way to stop them. Googled, and can't find a solution.

Other than Stranger Things and Thirteen Reasons Why, I'm kinda ho-hum on Netflix. I'm not much of a documentary person, and it's hard for me to take the time to get into new shows . When I do watch TV, it's mostly sports, so I don't have a lot of time to watch shows where I need to pay full attention from the beginning.

Although, the wife and I did just watch the Netflix documentary over the weekend about Aaron Hernandez. It was good.

Oh, and "FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened"

They’ve got a great lineup of standup specials.

Wild Country was another really good doc.

3 episodes into “You” and it’s decent, but I can’t help be reminded that I really don’t like Millennial Hipsters.

I started watching Knightfall. So far, I think it is pretty decent. Certainly the production quality is very high. I also noticed the nods to Shakespeare (in too many instances to mention), Ivanhoe (Adelina mirrors the heroic Jewess Rebecca) and Arthurian legend (look no further than the presence of Sir Gawain and Parsifal).

I think Netflix original programming is as good as any other service. Recently watched:

- I enjoyed The Irishman, but after one viewing I do consider it to be not as good as GoodFellas.
- The Messiah is really intriguing. Kind of a combination of The Leftovers and Homeland. Not sure if the lead character is supernatural or up to no good. Loved it.
- After Life (Ricky Gervais) is 6 episodes 20 minutes each, but really funny and touching / poignant. Tremendously well done IMO.
- The Witcher was just OK in my book.
- The Aaron Hernandez documentary was super interesting and a bit disturbing.

Lots of older great stuff: Stranger Things, MindHunter, Haunting of Hill House, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black

Finished both seasons of You, they were decent. I think S2 was better than S1. I hope they end things after S3, bc at a certain point, the plot gets old.

Starting up “Get Shorty”, the tv series. The show airs on epix, whatever the hell that is, but NFLX has syndication rights.

We started season one yesterday. Not bad so far though I was expecting something serialized.

I really enjoyed You and Messiah. Agree with the three season max for you. Unless they go in a completely different direction.
Has anyone seen The Kominsky Method starring Michael Douglas? Funny and entertaining IMO Alan Arkin is gold in this.

Kominsky Method is a hoot. Wish there were more episodes.

Finished Season 2 of Sex Education. It's a decent show. Not great but amusing. Season 2 seemed to be more directed at shock value and wasn't quite as good as season 1.

I’m on the second to last episode of Godless right now. It’s pretty good. Jeff Daniels is surprisingly convincing in his role as Frank Griffin. I’m assuming there won’t be any more seasons since season 1 is from 2017.
